The Hanging Gate is closed, I'm afraid to report. It enjoys a fabulous location high on the hills. There was snow on the ground and sheep in the road. But alas there was no beer.

Popped in for a beer last night. Seemed like a good landlord and the staff were very pleasant. Didn't eat, but a friend had and really enjoyed it. Said it was excellent value too. Am going for a second opinion tonight.

Changed hands a fortnight ago. New tenants opened a couple of days ago. Will go in and check it out and report later. Still maybe a little early, so please read whatever I say keeping in mind that they won't have had chance to settle in yet!

Well, the landlady (who I believe is a Lithuanian Swede, or vice versa) is certainly a character, but I find some of the hostile comments below quite bewildering. We went there for Sunday lunch recently, and had a really good quality, well cooked meal and a thoroughly enjoyable time. The aforementioned landlady did express the opinion that my menu choice was hardly manly enough for one of my (obvious!) masculinity, which I suppose some people might have found intrusive - but there was no question of bullying. Perhaps some people don't understand that banter is a central feature of pub of pub etiquette. I liked her, and I certainly liked her pub, of which she is justifiably proud, and to whose atmosphere she is pivotal. The situation is stunning (even more so, I imagine when there's no low cloud),the Hyde's beer was in top-notch condition, the open fire cheerful - and altogether I'd find it hard to find serious fault. Go there. Enjoy it. It's 250 miles from my home, and I'll be back!

We called in today when out for a hike - and I have to say found this pub charming. We had a sandwich (absolutely fine, large, lovely fresh bread and served with a little salad and chips). My husband tells me the beer was tasty and well kept and my glass of Shiraz was perfectly acceptable. The 'fearsome' landlady described below was friendly and welcoming and made a fuss of our dog. We found the prices compatible to all other peak district pubs - and we are locals. I laughed when reading the complaint abode from the person who comaoned that 2 coffee and 2 glasses of port were expensive at 11.50 - seems like reasonable value to me. And it is true - the view is good!

Extortionate prices felt like i have been ripped off on my first and last visit to to the Hanging gate.
calling in for two coffees and two glasses of port we were met with a bill of 11.50 and as I work in the trade thought this to be extortionate to say the least so queried the price to be met with a very rude and defensive attitude and a barrage of excuses to try and justify the price we had been charged....I wont be visiting again which is a shame as the location is quite stunning and this is all down to the poor attitude of the person that served us which from the observations I made assume to be the Landlady....

Shocking Land Lady and very expensive food beautiful views and thats about all this pub has to offer. My bank holiday experience was a complete nightmare I will never ever go back unless Godzilla leaves.

Fantastic views, very average food, very high prices, poor service. The landlady tries to bully visitors into having a starter but with a steak and ale pie costing over 15 and meagre portions I just wished we hadn't been taken there. 9 miles from where I live and I am never going back.

Took my wife and inlaws on a quiet Saturday (24th July) and waited an hour for food to arrive - no apology - the landlady held my wife to blame for choosing steak and ale pie, then suggested we buy a cold starter to fill in the time, rejecting my sister-in-laws suggestion that it be "on the house". The beer and view from the restaurant were fine, but the restaurant was cold and the food mediocre. Prior visits midweek for bar meals have been better, although the landlady is inescapable. I prefer the Rose and Crown, Allgreave, which I tried yesterday for the first time and which also has a nice view.

Lovely view. Terrible, terrible landlady. Just shockingly bad service with a shockingly bad attitude.

If I could post less than a 0 I would!
Just returned from a horror movie of a meal. Macabre hostess who gave us a Arthur Daly style hard sell on a 20 main course. 45 mins wait for some very average and overpriced food in a freezing dining room. Oh, and the owner was rude to my father when he asked if he could possible have one of the radiators turned on, suggesting that maybe he wasn't aware it was April......
A complete joke of a pub!

Lovely roadside setting high up on the Gritstone Trail which gives panoramic views over Cheshire. It's a hydes pub with Original, their seasonal and Speckled Hen when I visited, these are always in good condition. Tiny bar area and lounge with a side room full of brass plates, games and a fire to add character, only in the Circus in Manchester have I seen a smaller bar. The pub leads down to a dining area with splendid views and the food has a very good reputation locally, altough I haven't tried it. Outside at the back are more brilliant views and a rabbit hutch. Not the easiest to find, but if in the area you should definitely try to get here.

I was delighted to be able to celebrate my 21st Birthday here with my family and the pub was more than accommodating for our party of 18 including toddlers and babies. The pub is in an amazing location with first class views of the countryside and an ideal location to go for a stroll and the top class food. There was a wide variety of home made food which was to the highest standard I have experienced and I would defiantly recommend to anyone who wants a warm welcoming feel, with great food, local fish and a wide variety of drinks; if these do not appeal then go purely for the view. Thanks for a fantastic birthday, Sam Munnings January 2008
