This should be interesting a couple of so called tough guys from Winchester who have already messed up another pub in Winchester are coming to turn this pub around. From what I hear they can not be further up themselves then they are. Why do these breweries put these sort of idiots in charge they didn't pay the last brewery for the last 3 months rent brewery took them to court in the end.

This pub has been transformed dramatically with a thick veneer of plastering and paintwork. It remains a sports bar, with TV screens everywhere you look. The interior, with it's purple shades and lighting effects does in fact offer a pleasant and almost club-like ambience. The ales weren't my favourite but were in good shape.

The Hop Poles is a great quirky pub. It has Live Music every week and Live Sport on Sentanta & Sky Sports. Don't listen to the bitter previous comments about them treating their bands badly, it is not true. The bands that play here have a great laugh and a large majority of them come back at least 3 times a year. The Sunday Roast served 12-3 is superb. Receive a friendly welcome here. If you're a little bit different you will love this pub. Dog Friendly too!

I have had dealings with this pub more many years, and find the comments made by Catboybadger to be laughable in the extreme and way off the mark, The manager in friendly and the atmosphere convivial, live music is dwindeling these days and it is nice to still have a venue that offers such a wide range.

Slander: the utterance of false charges or misrepresentations which defame and damage another's reputation.
This review is slanderous. Defamation of character.
The band in question have unfortunately given a rather biased AND inaccurate version of the event on Saturday 4th August. Rather than airing my dirty laundry in public, I rang them in attempt to resolve the matter.
The Hop Poles values its astounding reputation, offering weekly live music of many genres and second-to-none service standards and atmosphere. There are certainly NO fights in the premises, or thefts!!
I ask you, the reader, to make up YOUR OWN mind about my pub, I love it and I bet you will too!

BE WARNED.
This pub rips off the bands who play there. Our band played there, (to no-one, we doubt any publicity had been done) after our set the extremely unpleasant landlady refused to pay us. She also attempted to steal equipment from us and threatend to have us beaten up. All in all a pub to stay well clear of.

this pub is doing really well now, with loads of live music, which is quite rare in alton now, they've got the cask marque award too, and a cool jukebox! still got that pub feel, everywhere else seems to be turning "trendy"... shit :)

not much going on in here, barmaid quite stroppy. more interested in talking on her mobile than serving beer not very nice. won't be back

not a big fan of the poles but it does look a bit better since the refit, when Jackie and Phil were there it was always a fun atmosphere and spent most of my college life playing pool in there during the day

biased, you work there! its an average pub, for an average, evening, although i am sat next to someone who is saying that he loves the pickled onion monster munch!

Great atmosphere, a very wide selection of lager including Bud on tap. 2 hugescreen tvs for the sport, a fantastic beer garden with BBQ for those long summer nights and bar staff who like to have fun.
