Lovely old building with a rambling interior in the centre of Warrington's shopping area. The focus appears to be predominantly on food. But ale drinkers are accommodated. The choice was Greene King Abbot or Adnams Fat Sprat. Family friendly place.

More real ale on my last visit with family for a meal. Cheshire Cat by Weetwood, Rev James, Blonde Witch, Hobgoblin, and one by Robinsons which I think was Trooper. I had the Cheshire Cat which was OK. Staff not very accommodating when requesting substituting sides (somebody wanted beans instead of whatever the meal came with). The meal I wanted wasn''t available so had to make a second choice, a three way chicken burger which wasn''t really anything special. The ordering process felt like hard work, and the ale wasn''t outstanding. Doubt I would be back for food or drink, and would probably try one of the many other pubs in Warrington instead. It looks a nice building but that, for me, was its best feature.

Visited on a recent weekday lunchtime. Was a bit disappointed to find all the ales were the big nationals - Greene King IPA, Robinsons Trooper, Doom Bar, Hobgoblin, etc. I didn't stay for a drink and just left. Hopefully just bad luck at the time of my visit.

Visited back in October on a Saturday night. Have always been intrigued by this building when in Warrington and was pleased to get my chance to go in for a pint and to check out the inside too.
I can't remember how many ales were on at the bar but we had a pint of Southern Cross, a New World Pale Ale by Weetwood. I don't remember the pub being packed, but it was busy enough. The wooden ceiling fascinated me.
Definitely one to go back to, and perhaps towards the start of the crawl rather than towards the end, so I may remember more about it next time!

Was here last week, and had an excellent pint of something or other, friendly staff, nice building originating it the 17th C

Well worth a visit. A nice old building with an interesting interior. Good selection of ales.
|
Good selection of real ales though you are in danger of not being seen by bar staff if you wait near the pumps! Pride, Landlord and Brains SA all on excellent form in recent visits. Always worth dropping in.

Judging by the comments below it seems as if this place has turned it around a bit. Was in there before Xmas and they had 4 Real Ales on the go and the quality of the one pint I had (TT Landlord) was OK. There were however a few meatheads knocking about. Wheel154 - is possible to have an excellent pint of Carling?

After a bit of a break the music night is back on so get down to the Barley for a good night on Wednesdays for open mic. Paula the hostess is as good as ever and singers musicians and even poets are all welcome. The Festival bitter is pretty good and the wine if thats your tipple is good value. Its a friendly atmosphere with original music with anything from Dylan to Mozart to Amy Winehouse to Johnny Clarke and original songwriters too

Nice building but that's about all it seems to have to offer. Dark and Dingy inside. They have lots of real ale hand pumps but only one in use. It did not entice me to stay.
|
Seemed pleasant enough but no choice of bitter on offer apart from Worthington's. Every lager you could think of though! Several little sections and very cheap menu, didn't eat but the food at other tables looked alright

I've frequented the Barleymow for several years. At the moment I wouldn't recommend this pub to anyone. The bar is filthy and has had a vomit aroma for months. I recently waited more than 30 minutes to get served. It was a busy night just before Christmas but it's not a huge pub and the bar staff weren't serving in order. Fast service is guaranteed but only if you're the mate of any of the bar staff. Closing times are inconsistent depending on the whims of the bar staff. I've seen them close early when the pub's busy. For a long time the Barleymow has been a pub where the music is predominantly rock & indie however this weekend they were playing hard core rave music at high volume to deter their regulars. It had the desired effect as me and my mates left after one drink. The bar staff were finding it highly amusing. If you want coke don't get draught as it's flat as a pancake and has been for several ages. The food is nice and good value for money but given that the bar doesn't appear to have been cleaned properly I'd question what the kitchen is like. This pub doesn't appear to want our money and custom so we've gone elsewhere. It's a shame as it's a really nice pub and in past times was THE place to go. My advice would be to give the Barleymow a miss until its run and managed properly and go to Porters instead. The atmosphere is really good. The bar staff are efficient and friendly and you get the feeling they appreciate your custom. The smoking facilities are excellent too.

Beautiful building inside and out. However the down side is it's owned by Carlsberg Tetley. Couldn't run a pub in a million years.
|
The Barley used to be a great place, with real atmosphere. Then the pub changed hands and it just hasn't been the same since! I spent most of my spare time in this place with the indie crowd and it's missed!
Such a shame, but an ra never to be repeated. It just seems to attract chavs, who sit on the benches outside sharing shandy.

The ye olde Barley Mow, a pub with lots of character which is only to be expected as the Barley is over 400 years old! Friendly staff, always a warm welcome. And they got a pool tabel too!!

This is hidden in the centre of the GOLDEN SQUARE its Tudor looking exterior gives off the impression that it has many an old person in here however that isnt correct!
We went here because when we were younger we went in with our parents and there was a bear in the wall and we since moved to manchester and decided seems as though were in warrington we'd see if it was still there!!!
Well its not!! we asked the bar man who looked proud to be able to answer are question -plus a few unwanted facts!!
This pub as very friendly staff and the (i assume they are regulars by the way we were stared at when we walked in) were - well different. Your typical student/mosher/metal/local male type pub.
Nice Cocktails though at reasonable prices :-)
they also have a pool table, quiz machine and a decent jukebox.
worth a visit even if its only for one!
