Visited in February. I had a Barnsley Bitter by Acorn, at £1.90 for a half, and I was pleasantly surprised by this ale - not bland at all and I would recommend it. Doom Bar was also on at the bar and another national that I can't remember. Yes it seems a bit chain pubby and food focussed but no issue with my ale.

The Boat Inn was very popular with the local middle classes. It has a nice setting next to the canal. Although the courtyard seating between various old buildings has no canal view. Service at the bar was slow, with customers forming an orderly queue. Bar staff didn't seem to know much about their products. But they were smartly dressed. Wells Bombardier, Black Sheep Best Bitter, Sharps Doom Bar & Leeds Pale were the 4 ales. We managed to find a table in the courtyard. But the table was filthy and the leftovers from other peoples' meals were on the floor. We noticed other customers using the staff's cleaning equipment to clean the food detritus off the table before their meals. Glasses were strewn across most tables. Whilst we were looking for food, the lack of cleanliness, the likely wait to be served and the generic-looking chain pub menu didn't fill us with confidence. So we moved on. Lovely setting. But looks as if it bites off a bit more than it can chew.

Paid another visit on a recent weekday lunchtime. The pub was busy, possibly due to the school holidays, but was quiet outside in the beer garden.
5 pumps at the bar on this visit - Doom Bar, Bombardier, Black Sheep, Old Speckled Hen, and Leeds Pale. I went for the Leeds Pale at £3.50. Not sure if the ale was about to turn past its best or if it just had a distinctive taste.

Visited here on a recent weekday around 5pm. It was a sunny day and the large outdoor courtyard was very pleasant to sit in. At the bar there were three ales available; I went for the Yorkshire Terrier by York Brewery at 4.2% costing £3.45 for a pint. Other ales available were Black Sheep and Old Speckled Hen.
The Yorkshire Terrier settled clear and had a nice creamy head. Sitting outside felt nice and peaceful even though there were a fair few other customers in.
Worth a visit if in the area, especially on a nice day to take advantage of the outdoor seating.

We'd heard great things about this pub, so went last weekend and were completely disappointed.
There were few people there when we arrived, but after ordering we had to wait about 45 minutes before our meals came out. No apologies for the delay - the table next to us were ordering as we sat down but had had starters and mains and finished them before ours arrived, so we know there weren't general delays. The food was ok although the sides orders were tiny for the price, but nothing to rave about. Noone checked to see if our meals were ok, and we waited about fifteen minutes after finishing before I went to queue at the bar so I could pay.
Overpriced for the standard of food, poor service and we certainly won't be visiting again.

For the first time in our 40+ years experience of eating out we were actually turned away from a pub/restaurant before we got anywhere near the door! After driving over 40km to lunch at this place,we approached the entrance and a man came out, said they'd "got the builders in" and they wouldn't be open for "about another hour". We got a half-hearted "sorry" as we walked away. No offer of a drink while we waited or an alternative nearby. Dreadful couldn't care less attitude. So we have no way of commenting on the food etc, and as a result of this shabby treatment we never will. If it is on a par with their customer service then we were probably lucky not to lunch there!

We have visited the pub for meals on numerous occassion & been happy with the food, until last night. We waited about an hour from ordering to having our meal served, our started was the very complicated Mediterranean Bread (3 chunks of bread with olive oil). The next table ordered after us & were enjoying their coffee when our meal arrived. I had to request clean cutlery too as every knife on our table was filthy. I had the Hunters chicken which was very dry, the cheese had congealed to a solid state again & the bacon was mostly fat, the chicken itself was dry but due to the fact I was hungry by this time I ate it. The peas also were dried up, the whole meal looked as if it had been sat on the warming plate for the hour we waited. My friends meals were not as they expected either, the Pork dry & the steak overcooked. I complained to the waitress who apologised & offered me a sweet as compensation but I'd seen the dessert menu & found it very limited & not very exciting, so i declined. To add insult to injury the young barman said "Good night Guys!" as we left, as women in our 40's we didn't appeciate this, surely he knows the difference between men & women at his age. A real disappointing venue now.

I haven't visited the Boat since the floods until March, it was always a favourite but unfortunately twice now the food has been terrible. The Hunters chicken was so hard it was difficult to eat and my daughter had the lamb with mash potatoe which had such a tiny portion of potatoe it had completely dissolved into the gravy before the table had been served. We tried it again for lunch yesterday and ordered a steak sandwich and chips. The sandwich was cold and the chips were so over cooked they were impossible to eat. It is a shame because the Boat is very easy to get to but we will not be visiting it again.

Food pub. Nowhere to drink. Beer of an average standard and very overpriced for the area (but food OK and good selection of wine!)

A member of the Vintage Inns Group, this riverside pub sells Tetleys Bitter and others. Good food to be had in 'Olde Worlde' surroundings. The novel 'Ivanhoe' was partly written in the pub by Sir Walter Scott.
