Now this pub has been through so many new landlords and owners it is crazy, every time new management come in they expect to run a thriving business, NOPE, prices are sky high, they constantly close early due to lack of boozers, its such a shame many years ago this pub was packed from opening till closing.

Closed at the moment, apparently.

I've had some wicked times in this boozer. Very relaxed atmosphere, great contrast of people, fantastic beer garden to use on that one day a year when the sun shines in manchester. Great fun on a thursday night and stays open late. What more would you want in a local?? All in all i've had some memorable sessions in there!

Decent - popped in for a few beers on a trip to Manchester this weekend for the WI test match. Very quiet actually, students have all gone home presumably, but a very pleasant place. Beer was okay and bar staff pretty helpful. Brilliant beer garden and their was decent music playing in the pub itself as well. Better than a lot of student boozers i've been in

Far too expensive for the studenty area, but very nice for a quiet pint if you don't mind splashing out, and good food, too.
|
Live literaly 30 seconds walk from this place. It's a bit dear if you want one of their excellent foreign beers, and although the toilets are a bit grim it's good for a sly pint or to start off an evening. Too expensive to stay for a whole evening though.

Well yes, the bogs are minging [gents anyway] and it's a pity they can't spend a couple of grand doing them up...
Beer choice is better than your average pub but being owned by folk from town it ain't cheap. But it's a trade off - the pub was a dump before and I never went, even though it was fairly cheap... now it's a lot nicer, so I am prepared [just about] to pay higher prices.
The food is now good for a typical pub - most of it is home-made and I've had a couple of excellent roasts there, plus homemade burgers, lasagne, pie [all home made and not too pricey]. All spot on and I'm picky about pub food ;o)
Sort out the bogs, reduce the volume on quiz night and you've got a very cool local. And I've not even mentioned the massive beer garden...

a few questionable pints; very noisy some events; and never buy lemonade there since it costs more than a pint

Pleasant of a nice evening, sitting in the garden. Only two real ales and quite expensive at that. That said its a friendly and relaxing environment...

Hello there , I have been to 2 parties there since last summer ( August bank holidays and Private party), the pub toilets were clean, the staff really nice and friendly and the manager seemed caring enough to check all was going ok and let us stay until 3 am , over all a great experience, I wil definitively go back !

Have to say that this is all very negative!! Its not that bad. The toilets arent that good, but please point me in the direction of a local pub in a student area that is!
I like it in there, the music is good, and i have to say that staff are nice too. There is an open fire when its cold and comfortable sofas and armchairs. They serve beer and the food isnt too bad either.
Thurday nights are really good downstairs and a nice variation to get you out of the house midweek for a layed back, relaxed atmosphere, listenting to (generally) good live music.
Its a good pub to go to with a group of good fiends for a early/late evening of atmospheric conversation.

pwaring's comment about the toilets is close, but in actual fact, I'm sure they've never cleaned them. They're absolutely disgusting. The mens toilets look as bad as they always have, they put no effort in during the last renovation - despite putting the prices up significantly! I hear the womens toilets are also terrible - so bad in fact that friends of mine refuse to go to this pub because they won't use the toilets.

Theres a band i want to see on Saturday, do i have to purchase tickets or do i just pay at the door??? Any replys to this i'd be very grateful of! cheers

Last time I went here the bar staff interrupted half way through one person's order to serve someone else at the bar, and by the looks of things the toilets hadn't been cleaned since the night before.
Beer garden is very nice, but the relatively poor service and apparent lack of cleaning has made me wary of providing return business.

Discovered the Rampant when it started to get sunny and warm - albeit not for long - around April and spent many an enjoyable evening in the beer garden. But having met the landlady, I have to agree with the negative comments about her apparent contempt for the customers who dare to make any suggestion or complaints. Beer is also no better than anywhere else, and there are many places towards town that have a much wider selection at better prices.

totally agree with s.a ferry's comment. a really nice pub gone to waste because of an extremly rude, nasty landlady. used to be my local now i never go in.

Great beer garden - practically in my back garden! May not be the greatest pub for drinks but the quizzes are fun and the band nights entertaining. Perfectly enjoyable for either a quiet night out or a fun filled evening/weekend of live music. The food has improved greatly over the last few months, they just need more drink variety.

I've never heard such rubbish talked about such a great pub. Jackie is great, the pub has a good atmosphere and the band nights are spot on, especially the Urban Glastonbury they put on.

This place is fantastic in the summer. There's nowhere else nearby with such a nice beer garden. Good atmosphere when the football's on. The main advantage of this place is that it isn't full of trendy pretentious people, just those up for some good beer and a good chat. Beer prices used to be on the expensive side, but within the last month they have changed supplier and not only has the price gone down, but it tastes better as well. Only negative point is that the quality of food can be variable. Feels like home (without the other half nagging at you).

Absolutely terrible! I didn't think it was bad last year, but it was 2.02 for a pint of smoothflow Tetleys! They didnt even have hand pulled bitter any more and now they are having the audacity to call 1.80 for a pint of Tetley's a special offer. BOYCOTT IT!

As a former staff member of the rampant lion I agree/sympathise totally with j, catherine huggett and jen.Having witnessed the deplorable manner in which the current landlord and landlady treat both customers and staff I terminated my employment there last summer. This potentially great pub is going to waste under diabolical management, now I don't even bother to drink in what used to be my cosy local. Any letters of complaint that peeved customers would like to submit should be sent to BLIND TIGER LTD. 14-16 PEMBROKE PLACE, LIVERPOOL, L3 5PX as this is the company that own the pub.

I've been going to the rampant for four years as a student, in my first year it was a great cheap pub, with great beer and loads of students, now it's full of middle aged men, has horrible tasting beer and costs just as much as the city centre. In general I'd advise anyone to just avoid it.
Martin - 17 Mar 2004 23:06 |
Usually a good mix of students, locals and City fans, but it's not what it used to be.
TEO - 25 Oct 2003 22:37 |
I thought the pub was alrite! A not bad pint of tetleys and it was a nice place to sit outside of, the beer isn't cheap but it ain't expensive either.
Tom - 14 Jul 2003 14:19 |
If you remember the Rampant from when it was a student-and-Man City pub with great prices (1.35 for a pint of Boddie's), save the memories and don't go back. This place has gone to the dogs since Salvador left. It's the worst possible cross between being an old mans pub and a trendy city bar. In other words, bad decor, bad service, bad beer, bad prices. A four pack of Fosters sitting in a bus shelter would be a better night out.

Where do I start? This pub is dog-awful!Considering its pleasant exterior, the pub itself offers little choice of beers, no special offers and the ladies loo NEVER has any toilet roll!!!The landlord himself seems to pay more attention to his social life than his pub.Basically, this pub is no-go.
jen - 10 Jun 2003 22:21 |
I have been visiting the rampant for the last two years as a student and the quality of the place has dramatically dropped since the new landlord took over. After writing a complaints form and posting it in the pub, I was gobsmacked when the landlord laughed at it and the bar man screwed it up! In my opinion, avoid its flat, overpriced beer at all costs!!!
catherine huggett - 9 Jun 2003 17:30 |
I last visited the Rampant Lion in June this year and the quality of the beer has decreased dramatically since the new landlord took over..After being given a flat pint of expensive Stella Artois I complained and was subsequently refused service..It is worth pointing out that I have been a regular of the pub for ten years and it was my first drink of the night...OR NOT!!..the staff are always very friendly..although they only recieve the minimum wage but unless you are a student with money to burn on bad quality beer I would steer well clear..there are fantastic pubs on Oxford road and in town a short bus ride away.

you would make so much more money if you served food until 8.30PM believe me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i have a suggestion to submit to you staff at the "rampant lion". As you will surely have noticed the "lion" from the sign above the pub has disapeared. Therefore may i suggest a replacement name for this fun pub aimed at student extortion. I guess that was a yessss!!!! I was thinking that you could rename your pub the "RAMPANT GERBIL" this would in my opinion make the place much more attractive to young people. i hope you will seriously consider my suggestion and the you will be working on it from tomorow onwards
isabelle - 25 May 2003 19:30 |
dear madmulbus i agree that the homely feel is fake or should i say unexistant. The garden i must admit was a good idea but and there is a but! What is the use for a garden in Manchester?? I mean you'll get at the most 2 days where the weather will permit sitting outdoors hense the garden although very nice stays pointless. The standard of the music played in there is absoluetly deplorable and the staff could be more friendly and professional. Nevertheless i suppose it proves to be quite convenient for students residing nearby.
vicky - 25 May 2003 19:21 |
The rampant is the most fabulous pub in the surroundings of Manchester. The resident DJ (DJ tidal wave) is just eccelent!!! lets not forget to mention the famous Quizz nights and the fun filled "salsa" evenings!!!! Basically it you don't believe all this crap then you can always go and check it out for yourseves!!! ;)

I am a student living close to the Rampant Lion and go there regularly. It is a fantastic pub in my opinion. Great place to watch the footie. Pub quiz on a Tuesday is brilliant too. Always very busy with a good atmosphere so they must be doing something right. Beer garden is hard to beat in the summer - one of the best because it actually is a garden unlike many pubs whose idea of a beer garden is a few rickety tables next to the delivery entrance! Couldn't fault the place!!!!!!
Richard Walker - 8 Feb 2003 15:35 |
Yup, the beer here is always good and the food's a decent standard too. Open late on Fridays and Saturdays I think.
Nige - 30 Jan 2003 12:30 |
Nice pub, one main room with a fake homely feel to it but works okay. Also conservatory and excellent beer garden when warm, the entrance of which is marked by a bizarre arch. Decent range of pumps too.
