No Real Ale And It SMELLS!! 5/10

I liked it when it was the Campbell when Sabs ran it, those were the days!!
Join my campaign to bring back the Dive: now there was a classic case of a great pub being ruined by 'progress'. They tried to cater for the students (bless 'em) and soon went out of business. Now where can an honest to god law abiding 50 something ex Hells Angel go for a pint, eh?

The Campbell rules! Been going here for about 7 years now and despite going to uni in Hull and now living in Manchester I still find myself back there whenever I go back to Cov. Friendly staff, clientele and as stated by another reviewer DJ KIP RULES!!! Friday night upstairs at the Campbell is THE best rock night anywhere, mainly because DJ Kip doesn't pander to emo 'scenesters' and still plays proper rock/metal/punk. What's with all this rock fan bashing? Ever see a fight in a rock club...? People go to rock clubs for good music, not for a fight. Townies take note...

Campbell forever!!!
Its ok, not going to win any Camra awards though. Lack of space, distinct smell of disinfectant in the air (rather than then puke though), and chances are you are older than the staff and your hairs not as....interesting.

This place is alright. That's it though, it's nothing special. Plays better music than most, but unfortunatly rock music brings with it losers. For comedy value why not stick a quid in the video jukebox and play Westlife! A friend once ran in there and shouted "I hate Green day"! Got some funny looks but the regulars are socially rejected teenagers so no fisty cuffs, which is, I suppose, a good thing. Go to the Oak next door. Simply superior in every way.

The Campbell as it will always be known to me is one of those places that everyone needs. A pub where you feel totally comfortable, the staff are friendly and the clientele are amiable. Admittedly, as someone else has commented it gets a bit rowdy during bg sporting events, but that applies to the vast majority of watering holes across the country.
Mostly students drinking here, but with the occasional office types during the day for lunch. Drink promotions wise, Wednesday is the 1 drink night with a good selection of tipples for a quid, enough to keep most people happy (and pissed).
Music is refreshingly alternative, save for the random selector jukebox which pumps out Busted or S-Club from time to time, but theres usually a rush to get the cash into it to ensure its only a minor annoyance!
All in all, its somewhere that I could never see myself wanting to break away from, cant remember a bad night in there to be perfectly honest.
The doormen are a bit of a lottery, and sometimes it seems they give the regulars more grief than the noobs but its only a small issue.
If you've not been yet. Go! Enjoy this place. I know I will.

this place is awesome!!! its had me and all my friends (whom ive aquired curtacy of the campbell) hooked for a demi-decade. 'k bout 6yrs but thats since drinkin age. now in its revamped form its fresher and funkier than ever. real chilled downstairs during the day with constant promos on drinks and food as well as the added student bonus of extra yellowcard discount. staff are a great laugh makin the service pretty special. club nites will grant you passage to the time of your life upstairs with 1 drinks on wednesday and promos on friday with the ultimate alternative dj kip doing the honours on the decks, gets kinda packed but thats how cool and popular this place is, nvr a negative cause it all adds to the electric atmosphere. all its missin is a hotel suite...then you'll never have to leave. praise the lord.... mr jim

I visit an elderly lady and she tells me stories of when she lived in Coventry during the war years. She went on a date on the night of the massive raids in Coventry and she and her date found shelter in the Colin Campbell! She recalls hoards of people in the cellar, sitting on boxes of beer and wine and her needing the loo, but the only toilet was the one outside and that no longer had a door on it! But off she went... She remembers the planes swooping over her and she soon ran back inside. She sat on her dates knee whilst he sat on a crate of wine, when they finally got up in the morning he had the lines of the crate imprinted on his bum!
When they got out of the Colin Campbell they looked up and down the street and there was nothing left. The pub was the only builiding they could see that hadn't been flattened to the ground. Incredible.

I've just read my original comment and realised I may have given the impression I don't like this pub...
Phoenix is great!
Long live The Campbell!

Part of the Scream (formerly It's A Scream) chain and therefore aimed squarely at students. Was called The Campbell until recently and is still listed as such in some directories. Before that it was known as The Colin Campbell. Fairly expensive if you don't qualify for a 'Yellow Card'. Has a slightly alternative feel which is reflected in the music (club upstairs) and clientele. Generally good atmosphere, but there can be a surfeit of oafs when football or rugby is on the big screen.
