Visited yesterday 09/06 Good range of beers. The garden is superb as was the the service. A very nice clean country pub . Well done Duncan and his wife. Yet another pub to revisit

Sadly since posting our comment in Sept 2010 the Bolton Arms has deteriorated significantly. Went there this evening for wife's birthday. No rolls served at table until we asked. Glass of wine Sav Blanc 5.00, 1/2 ABC Resolute 1.70!
Wife had Fillet Steak, asked for MR, got it very rare. Also found it very chewy. I order Breast of Guinea Fowl, got Leg and Scrawny Wing with no apology or reason. Only apologised when I complained. Even had audacity to charge extra 2.00 for serving of Garlic Butter with Steak.
Have heard good reports about The Crown so will go there in future.

I like this pub.
The beer is good and the food is very good. What a great turnaround from the dump it was before.
The landlord is a character and is always friendly to me and my family, as is everyone else working in the pub, I have never seem the landlady scowl and am amazed at that comment.
If you want good food and service in a lovely place then this is for you.

Been here a number of times recently, all in the evenings on week days and found the staff to be attentive, the beer excellent, if a little pricey, and the food very good, especially the starters and desserts.
It's a shame Amy the pastry chef has moved on to a bigger pub to further her education.
Would definately recommend it, and infact am going back tonight!

We visited as a group of five on a Wednesday lunchtime. The pub looks a bit upmarket and we expected stuffy service etc. No so. The beer was good (3.30/pint), the sandwiches were moderately priced (for Hants.!) and the service could not have been more friendly. We'll try it again. Maybe we'll get to meet the landlord mentioned in other comments..

I went with 6 friends over the weekend and were made to feel very unwelcome despite an earlier assurance that all would be well, the landlady scowled at us for our entire visit and the pub was'nt even busy. This establishment seems to be well known in Basing for this type of attitude - don't waste youe time on it.

fiftyfive - You got that slightly wrong, the strange landlord talks total c**p!! What a way to ruin a pub, or is it a restaurant??? Well I agree with others, I can't work out what the place is. My recommendation? Keep driving!!!

Changed beyond all measure, and certainly for the better. Beer and food are both well above average - beer can be served in a jug glass which I feel is a nice touch. It does have a slight problem with it's identity, as identified by a previous poster. but when so much effort and thought has gone in to making the place as pleasant as possible, I can overlook that. Great for the very young ones, as there is a penned in Wendy House in the attractive garden. It is expensive, yes, but frankly, you get what you pay for in this world. Transforming the Bolton cannot have come cheap, and if you want to drink somewhere pleasant rather than some depressing little hell hole then you have to pay for it. I'm also slightly bemused about the comments re. the landlord. Despite being Scottish, he seems like an affable enough chap. He has topped up my pint unprompted after the first gulp on more than one occasion. Little touches like that keep me coming back.

It's been completely re-done and the food is good, although quite expensive,...
It's the sort of place you go for dinner,... not for a few drinks on a weekend...!
|
Strange landlord, talks a load of c**p.

I remember this pub most affectionately from the early 80's when I and my colleagues (who worked in Ringway House) used to drink there regularly at lunchtime. We always enjoyed it then, so I hope it's still going strong. I guess all the staff have long since changed since then - but that's life. We were all Monty Python fans then, and jokingly used to call it 'The Notlob' (an incorrect palindrome of Bolton)!

Clean, tidy and well presented. Only problem is the place does not have an 'identity'. It can't figure out if it's a pub, restaurant or a show home. Beer is very over priced and the menu is very bland. As for the manager....well. But the landlady tries hard. Give it a miss.

..... was amazed by the refurbishment,... it's done really well,...
although, It's more of a resturant now,... certainly wouldn't go there for a few drinks ?... (at 3.25 a pint)

Whilst not looking particularly alluring from the outside, the recently refurbished interior really is quite super. Theres separate dining and drinking areas which feel rather swish. There were a couple of ales on, plus a real cider (or was it perry? I forget) which come in handled mugs - nice. My Andwell bitter was a bit flat unfortunately but the cider/perry my friend has was good. Id give it another go and hope the beers a bit better next time, the place seems to have a fair amount going for it at the moment.

What a brilliant job the new owners have done his place looks bright and airy, you are greeted with a war welcome. There is provision for food in a restaurant area where the bar use to be, food is of a high standard. The bar is now situated at the back in what use to be an old function room, which looks lovely now with the high ceiling and beams, about time Old Basing had a pub that can hopefully become the heart of this local community as well as offer a great place for non local to come relax and enjoy themselves.

THIS PLACE IS A GREAT SURPRISE,LOVELY REFURB GREAT BEER AND DELICIOUS FOOD,EASILY THE NICEST PLACE IN THE AREA! A CREDIT TO THE NEW OWNERS.
|
Pub now re-opened. ABSOLUTELY STUNNING!!! A must be visit for anybody in the area!
|
The pub is CLOSED at the moment for redecoration and some T.L.C.
|
not too bad, a bit clicky and sometimes a long wait to be served even when quiet.
|
I love this pub. full of local banter, decent food, good beer, live music some fridays, good beer garden ideal on a sunny weekend.
|
....... I hardly ever go here as it's a bit far for me, and a bit to small for my liking, and think this is probably more suited for the older customer,
But i have to say the bar staff were extremely friendly, and it was a karaoke night and there was a great atmosphere,....
good country pub for the locals!
