A better tha average Wetherspoons with enthiastic staff who are proud of their beer. Excellent beer quality including welsh micro beers.

A rather interesting pub that originally started out as a pub then became a catholic church (a small one at that) and reverted to being a pub once more. The bar area is in the narrow church area with two large rooms on the left. A pleasant smoking area with tables and chairs is to the right. It's one of the few Wetherspoons with the toilets on the same level!
4 guest ales on all being locally produced Welsh ones. Service was good.
According to the manager the pub gets very hectic when the students are back as this pub is their first port of call when heading for a night on the town.

Rarely does a Wetherspoons pub come out as my favourite pub of the day. But the Black Bull marginally pipped the Tap & Spile, Boatyard and Mostyn Arms as my favourite pub in Bangor. The beer range wasn't brilliant for a Wetherspoons - Marstons Pedigree, Greene King Abbot & Ruddles Best, Wychwood Hobgoblin & Nethergate Old Growler. The cider & perry range was good - Westons Old Rosie & Cider Twist Raspberry plus Broadoak Perry were available. The interior has more character than a standard Wetherspoons, with the small bar area occupying a former church. The lower level is more typical of the brand with its open plan modern style and tables packed in a little too tightly. A good option in the town centre.

We arrived "off peak" so didn't experience any negative vibes. Bar staff a bit surly but beer was good quality. A small group of blokes looking to start WWIII and I can imagine what this might be when multiplied up for a later session!!

went in early afternoon and the abbot ale was ok. a bar with a few steps down to the lower seated area. the pub from the outside look like it was a old chapel, church as a spoons average

I am usually a fan of JDWs, but this one was something else. Rammed with vertical drinkers, X-factor showing on the TV with volume on ear-splitting, and utter chaos behind the bar. A range of festival ales on, but Ugh. It could be better at other times, but given the limited range of alternatives on the high street, I suspect not.

Drinks are as good as any other Wetherspoons pub, service is somehow worse than the others, its as if the bar staff are trying to be terrible. I really can't recommend this place to anyone as the staff are so woefully bad. The tables are filthy and they never clear the garden area, the nicest part of the building is the toilets.

go for the beer .. DEFINATELY NOT THE SERVICE - IF U CAN CALL IT THAT whilst this pub has an unrivaled selection of real ales the bar staff are quite possibly the worst you may ever experience,,, up their with basil fawlty when u do get served its like u are intruding on a private conversation beware or aproach at your own risk

Lovely pub.good real ale in an ecclesiastical setting.Nice view from the beer garden at the back.Visit only onde a year and have never had a bad pint or meal.

This is the most horrendous wetherspoons i have ever visited. I was standing at the bar waiting to be served and the OBNOXIOUS barmaid, to my surprise, actually ignored me and served the 3 people behind me 1st! On another visit i asked for a cloth at the bar as someone had spilt a drink and the person ignored me and walked off. The person who got me a cloth in the end was very rude. I do not recommend this wetherspoons TO ANYONE.

Perfectly reasonable Wetherspoons, with a good mix of customers (the majority of whom were also enjoying a meal). Nice pint of Arundel Footslogger (but I should have asked for the sparkler to be removed as a southern ale doesn't deserve this abuse!).

The previous review can only be described as legendary-HA HA HA!
Not actually that bad though, the Conwy bitter was very good, and the staff were friendly. Mega cheap.

Watered down lager, they put carling through the stella pipes, lemonade through the carling pipes, you could plaster a wall with their curry and assault someone with a chip.
|
Good wetherspoons with a nice beer patio out the back with gr8 views. My real ale experience was better than previous with a nice pint of lemon dream. 8/10

Last time I was in there (about a month ago) I was served two totally undrinkable pints. I turned the pumpclips round myself, but noticed that the bar-staff turned them back around and continued serving! Shame.

Very nice pub indeed. Tends to get a bit crowded on evening the college students are free, but otherwise has a nice selction of real ales and reasonable prices.

The Black Bull is a JD Wetherspoons freehouse. Converted from a former Catholic Church, many of the original architectural features still remain.
