Nice decor, beer in good nick, food is nice but the pub is lacking soul

Staying at the Elvetham Hotel and asked for a decent pub for food. Short drive into Fleet. Surprised that you have to pay to park, but you do get a refund. Very smart place and friendly bar staff. Timothy Taylor Landlord was as good as anywhere in the country. Food was OK - a little on the pricy side. Nice place.

Still an M&B pub but not under the Ember Inn brand;now a fine country dining pub. Still settling down and the jury is still out on whether it will succeed in Fleet.
|
In here last Saturday and it didn't seam like an Ember Inn to me. I have since checked out the Ember Inn website and that confirmed that this is NOT an Ember Inn. I had a average pint of Broadsord for 3.25. Drink and food prices in excess of what you would pay in an Ember Inn

An Ember Inn pub. Roll out the red carpets. Decent pub with a food orientated feel.
|
Plenty of real ales to keep one satisfied here. I rate this pub as an excellent place to go.
|
staff shouldnt pass comment on there on place let the pub goer decide

LOOK OUT WE HAVE HAD A REFURB - Opening Wednesday the 18th nov - do not miss out on your opportunity to experience the wonderful surroundings of the fresh OATSHEAF of Fleet!!! Friendly staff to cater for the classic Ember Experience!
|
Very nice family oriented pub; an excellent variety on the menu! The staff are friendly and happy to bring the food out to wherever you may be on the premises. We've visited 4 or 5 times now and each time has been alot of fun! We recommend it! Good job!

Comfortable spacious pub with modern decor and pleasant atmosphere. Seven real ales (mostly christmas seasonals from the likes of Bateman's, Brain's, York etc.), not horrendously expensive (around 2.60 a pint), good enough for a three hour session after a match at the nearby football club.
|
Never been a favourite pub in town, but every now and again I go back to see if it has improved. Supposedly catering for the more mature clientele, I was a bit surprised to be told to drink up, more than onece, at closing time, by a kid staff member, as if he were talking to a mate. We know that they must abide by the laws, but there is such a thing as speaking respectfully. Haven't been back since last summer. Luckily there are plenty of alternatives

Ember Inns execs please take note. This pub is in real danger of losing regulars like myself. With its excellent location and great big garden, together with traditionally relaxed atmosphere and real ales it's normally my pub of choice. BUT... management has let the place slide of late - it's desperately short staffed more than anything. As has been pointed out, toilets are a disgrace. The beer garden hasn't seen a lawnmower in what looks like years. Frequently all the tables have dirty plates, glasses etc on them. Decor is getting tatty and it needs a refurb. With more staff this could be a really great pub. Cut the grass. Clear the tables. Get more serving staff on!

Visited twice (why?) over Christmas. Both times the real ales were off (or they were taken off after I complained) The Gents was still flooded and when I reported it to the bar staff (as requested by the notice in the loos) the Brain of Britain behind the bar asked if I was referring to the Ladies or the Gents. The smoking ban means you can now enjoy the stench of lager soaked carpet as you enter the place. The armchairs and sofas give the impression that this is a place to relax and spend an evening with friends. Only if you are Billy No Mates.
|
This is potentially a very good pub. Unfortunately its always a mission to get to the bar on busy nights and the staff have always been way too slow with serving.
Half decent selection of beers and wines. Nothing special though.
The gents have got worse and worse over a period of time. Usually only one cubicle thats "working".
|
At last, an Ember Inn which is well run and well supported. The Oatsheaf is a great meeting place for early evenings - food does Mitchells + Butlers proud, especially the Satay sticks, Mmmm. Beer not bad and garden is superb in the sun. Shal return for sure - especially if the same bar staff are working
|
Consistently the best pub in town, more grown up, as has been said by others. At its best during the summer months due to the large garden, but also nice in the winter with its open fires and high backed arm chairs.
|
not a bad pub - seems more grown up than the rest of town which cant be bad! beer seems well kept but wine could be improved (personal opinion of course!). Staff friendly enough and the pub is very well kept. Garden is great in summer
|
A very nice pub with a warm atmosphere. The drinks are alright with youngs and london pride for the ale drinkers. You will find the toilets if you look hard enough
|
Hello what a strange pub what a strange town.
And no tery is not there anymore thank god say a majority.
Had a young guy in there doing a good job but a tough one.
new manager now i think so we'll see what happens if i ever venture into that town again

Is this Pub still licensed to Terry Batty?? If so, is that the same Terry Batty that used to run the Ashley Arms in Bristol???
Answers on a post card (or email)

Reasonable pub, not the best in town but then certainly not the worst. Big garden which never seems to be taken full advantage of. Beer is reasonable at best and the expensive side of averagely priced. Having said all that the place has come on significantly compared to what it used to be like, so hopefully onwards and upwards.
|
over all its a good pub if i want a good layed back night with your friends this is the place! its not that cheep but prices are ok foods nice not as good as the prince of wales! went for a job there they never got back to me took that as a no! over all i would give it a 5/10
|
Enjoy using this one I find the Manager (Terry) warm and welcoming. Great beer garden and overall a great comfortable atmosphere, well done Terry !!
|
This used to be a great pub back around 1989, used to like it a lot. Went in earlier this year, it's had many refits but was still ok despite Fleet itself going down hill!!!
Wish they would bring the goat back, well it's now dead, but it was quality having a goat on a long tether roaming the back garden during the summer

Re warm brown ale - ignore the label. Many of us prefer our brown at room temperature.
|
agree on the newcastle brown, i have no clue what you're talking about, we just have the casks. sunday and tuesday are fun, although tuesday is a lot quieter. and yes, the smoking area is now the "center" of the pub, this does mean that non smokers must walk through a smoking area, however at the moment there are more smokers than non, and the people who worry about the smoke are usually there for food and one or two drinks, which means it is a lot more useful if the people who will be going back and forth to the bar the most, are closest to the bar
overall a nice pub, i like it.
|
First of all i'd have to say that the Oatsheaf does not sell, and has never sold 'Newcastle Brown Ale' - so KB can remove his comments, because he's obviously talking about another pub!
Secondly, don't forget about the Tuesday Night Quiz, that starts at 9 too.
Thirdly, i'm dying to know who splodger is, so we can discuss the no-smoking areas further.
Cheers

Undergone another re-fit. Looks very nice again however has now got a VERY limited smoking area which is oddley enough placed in the area infront of the bar which you already couldn't smoke at and is now a concentrated area of smokers which defeats the object for the bar staff and non smokers who now have to walk through plums of smoke to get in/out of the pub and to the bar. Quiz on sundays now hosted by lovely girl, however has real problems in pronouncing the questions which leads to confusion - still very popular tho

Very popular pub & the oldest in the high street. Was refurbished & became an Ember Inn a few years ago- caters very much for the 30-something market. I find it quite agreeable when I'm in the right frame of mind. Youngs is a very fine draught bitter. Good Guinness. Spirits a bit pricey. Was originally a coaching inn on the crossroads. Food ok. Huge back garden with lots of tables- fills up in summer. Have whiled away many a happy Sunday afternoon in the summer there! Popular among teachers from my old school, for some reason.

Popular 'plastic pub' hosted by Ember Inns. I was dissapionted on my first visit to be served a warm 'Newcastle Brown Ale' When I pointed out they were to be served cold the manager informed me they always should be served warm and that they didn't fit in the new fridge anyway. Things have improved since hence it's new popularity

Amber Inn: Warm and Friendley pub. One of the original Coach Inn's of Fleet. Today one of the most popular pubs in Town, especialy with the early 20s to late 30s. Packet to capacity at weekends. Very Popular and Friendly Quiz on Sunday Nights from 9 although to get a table best be there from 8.
