Well that didn't take long. Called last week to give it a try. What can I say? For one thing it doesn't smell any more. Even the toilets have been refurbed (albeit with the wc out of order, still, according to the graffiti), the whole place is cleaner, I assume it's had a lick of paint or maybe just a damned good fettling, even the floor looks like new. Nearly as many beers as before, some of the usual faces and all 3 or 4 we had were in great condition. Even Mark the long-time former landlord was in having a pint. Busier that I've ever seen it, but a strange mix of clientle. Bit rough actually, some of the women quite amusingly so. Not that I'd tell them to their face..... Good to know it's still worth a call.

NOTE. Changed hands. Sold out to Punch Taverns, which rarely bodes well. They're looking for a landlord so if anyone fancies their chances...... The beer was still fine last night (Friday) but choice more limited. The pub was emptier than ever. Real Radio on in background louder than ever. How long before it's demolished and/or turned into housing?

Great pub nice atmosphere, been going in for a few months now and im very impressed. i love my rear ale and its nice to know theres a local pub that has a wide range of ales.
staff have always been happy to see me and i have had a few meals there with the wife and kids and the foods been good too altough i think the kitchen is closed at the minute so they can do some work on it. that sould be up a going again by the end of may apprently.

My 2nd visit to this pub.Once again the standard and choice of real ale are excellent and reasonably priced. Its great coming to these types of pubs as you get to try a variety or milds, darks, strong, pale and session ales all at once although the backside suffers the following day. Locals happy to crack, the lass on the bar was quite knowledgeable when recommending ales too..no loud noise either .a great pub for ale and having a crack.... Another visit is planned for next week when our group from West Cumbria travel down early before our game with Huddersfield.

Been going years. Always loads of beers on. Nice canalside location. Yes the landlord & landlady can seem a bit odd, and some of the staff certainly can, but their hearts are in the right place. Example. Once I got a bad pint of Eastwoods (only one Ive ever had there). No problem, changed for something else. Landlord changed the barrel and 10 minutes later brought me a fresh half of perfect Eastwooods, free. This guy really does care about his beer and when youve been in a few times theyre friendly enough. And we dont actually go in that often because its not local. Only downside bit barn-like. 9/10.

We visit this pub fairly regularly and despite comments on other pub site, find the staff friendly and the pub very comfortable with a huge selection of real ales (about 12) plus a good selection of foreign beers.

Called in at 2.40 last Friday afternoon. Noticed a couple of people eating and as I was starving I enquired if they did food. Young bonny lass behind the bar said I should be ok if I hurried to order. At the same time the mess on my left (that was shovelling chips down her throat at great speed) piped up "kitchens shut, shut at 2.30" She shouts this at the barmaid rather than addressing me direct Turns out this thing is the landlady!! Pubs all over closing and this idiot is still employed? Why?? AVOID

Decided to give them another go, but wish had'nt bothered - found equally unfriendly and abrasive staff - facilities were dirty and smelly - most of seating was torn and foisty - and to cap it all, ale was warm and flat - that's it now - you go there at your peril - there are far better places for a nice evening out that will welcome you with open arms
|
good old pub style decor and tasty selection of real ales, however bar staff were very dour and unwelcoming and no sign of landlord & landlady until late on when they came to close the bar - unfortunately a most unfriendly pub, and one which should make you want to return, but doesn't

Great pub by the canal .................. still suffering from the hangover!
|
Recommened for real ale lovers, good selection of beers from local breweries.
|
Agree with all said before. There are tables outside if it is smoky in.
|
Me mum used to run this place about 12-13 yrs ago, and I'm so glad the Barge is still as well regarded. We always enjoyed the time spent with the locals and if Pepi is still around, wish him all the very best from Stu.

Brilliant brewpub, always got 10 real ales, food during the day, pool table, darts, pinball, can't beleive it's only rated 7.5/10
|
great pub with an excellent selection of real ales always available which are kept in top form, the only down point is that smoking is allowed throughout & it can get quite smokey at busy times.
|
The home grown beer, such as bargee and nettle-thrasher are both good drinks
|
a micro brewery where it is possible to sample a dozen different beers(if you are up to it)the lunches are also excellent in both quality and value - i had to comment on the food as her indoors is keen on that sort of thing. good beer good surroundings and yes dear good food
