This place stinks of wet dog/damp walls, b.o and piss from the toilets. These are possibly the worst toilets I have visited. Air freshener is really needed and 10 buckets of disinfectant. If you can hold your nose or have a spare peg with you the real ale is really rather good.

What a brilliant, bullsiht free boozer. Biker run, live music, excellent weekend rock DJ and well kept ales. This place might be run down physically but morally it is the best pub in the area. Talking to Pauline, the pub runs a community mental health care project on Thursday nights and a MENCAP social once a month, staffed entirely by volunteers. It is involved in Animal rescue projects and is a a hotspot for some of the local Socialist groups. The place is almost run like a commune, it's either a glorious throwback to the late 80s or the future of community pubs in the UK. Racist? Are you having a bloody laugh? I am black, the landlord is Jewish, half the regulars are Eastern European, and the DJ is mixed race Syrian/South American! I have never been in a more off the wall, welcoming and inspiring pub in my life!

What a shame about this once great pub. The place smells of dogs the windows look like they have bullet holes in the toilets seem to be the only sanctuary. A bit of love and attention is what's needed plus a good clean up of dog Crap outside so the place can host beer festivals and bbq's once again.

Nice enough landlord but im sorry guys the place could do with a bit of a clean up. It could become a great place to hold a beer festival outside but it just looks a bit of a mess. The real ale i had was not bad, think it was from robinsons. Also whats happened to the heating? It was freezing the last time i went in there.

Looks like a hatchet job going on here. Good on you for not serving live musicfan job well done.

I often go to this pub and i can honestly say that i have never had a bad experience here. The staff are all very friendly and have always made me feel welcome. They might not have all the ales they used to, but they do have a good range of beers. Well done Pauline and Andy.

Avoid this pub at all costs!
Living locally, Ive visited The Station in Ashton-Under-Lyne a few times recently and each time Ive been met with a rude, unfriendly welcome and very poor beer selection.
The first time was in November, they had no real ales on tap, in fact, no draft beer on at all, only a very poor selection of cans of larger and cider, and no explanation as to why. And, after us only being in there for an hour they ran out cider too!
So, it was with trepidation we went back in this weekend (Jan 31st 2009) to give them a second chance. This time, there was one real ale on tap result we thought - but not really they was no heating on (and it was -2 outside!). Even the bar staff were wearing their coats. There is a lovely real fire in the corner, but the staff kept forgetting to keep this stoked and it kept going out so we sat there, freezing, in our coats. Dont even get me started on the dodgy dcor and ripped seats!
We were made to feel completely unwelcome and like they were doing us a favour by letting us in to the pub.
Im so disappointed that this pub has gone to the dogs after having such a good reputation in the past. With many pubs now closing down, its a shame that this one doesnt appreciate its customers. Maybe the managers should take note, appreciate any customers who choose to drink in the pub, change their appalling attitude and do something before its too late!

Since my last comment i have to say this pub has rapidly gone downhill. Its dirty and dingy, dog basket and bowls of dog food at the end of the bar, either one out of six handpumps on or no beer at all. Quality not up to what it was, never anymore than half a dozen people in, dirty, dark, avoid, a dive.

When bought and renovated from a wreck in the days when Boddingtons made beer this was a great pub. However, it has since had a succession of poorly skilled and lack lustre keepers... It's now a place to avoid, the customer is tolerated, they sell crap beer, don't wash the glasses. One wonders if they wash their hands prior to making the horrid sandwiches which are offered as a loss leader to help sell the ill kept beer.
Visit at your peril.
Makes one wonder how the "Publican" gave them "customer service pub of the Year"
I used to call the place my second home and I'm telling the truth.

Awful! Drunk unfriendly management, racist staff and no beer! Avoid at all costs!
|
OK, only 2 of the handpumps on; service slow. Good jukebox though

This pub has certainly taken a turn for the better, beers superb, friendly staff, good juke box, great to see it doing so well, agree the best pub in town.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Great old victorian pub with great beers, railway theme, beer garden and real fires.

Superb, the best pub in ashton by far!
Great beer, great staff and a great atmosphere. What more could you ask for?

A fantastic old victorian pub with high ceilings, a big beer garden and concervotory. Last night they had a selection of nine cask ales all in peak condition (yes i did try them all!) as well as the usual largers and the more unusual like Dortmunder and Leffe on draught. They have got a huge selection of single malts and speciality vodka as well as the more common spirits and a good range of bottled larger, as well as an Italian peroni and a range of bottled ales. They have a good pool table and a juke box and apparently there are weekly performances by a highly regarded Celtic band on an outside stage or inside if the weathers bad.

Couldn't agree more. Just a few things to add: they also do a nice range of sandwhiches, and if you go when the cletic band is on (normally a Thursday I think) the landlady provides a complimentary Celtic themed supper. When I was there, she brought round trays of oatcakes with salmon and cream cheese, prawn, and plain cheese for the veggies. There were also scottish flapjacks and shortbread!! All this on top of good service and welcoming regulars. If your in the area, check it out.

This place is really picking up again! Today they had a selection of eight cask beers all in superb condition from ring o bells, millstone, coach house and holts brewery. All the staff were great and they really seem to know there stuff when it comes to ales.
Well done to all the staff for turning this place around!!

Forgot to add, dont even think about bothering with the food. They do less now than they did in July and the quality has really suffered. Try the Caledonia Hotel (just up the road) if your feeling hungry.

This place is actually quite a nice pub but has suffered since the manager left. The quality of the beer varies drastically and unfortunately seems to be getting worse however they do have a good selection of bottled ales.

Beautiful pub, excellent beers and beer garden. Staff helpful and friendly - all in all a really great pub since the takeover.
|
Great range of vodkas, beers too but what can i say vodkas my tipple. Good atmosphere, no rowdy lads but lively enough. Believe food is on the way as management has changed recently.
|
They don't seem to mind me coming in here. Can't get enough of the railway theme.
|
Has a Railway theme A good supply of real ales
