At £4.30 a pint for regular strength beer I have been priced out of this place which is a shame as It's a nice pub. The nearby Guide dog is a pound per pint cheaper so go there instead.

wow what a great pub - first off the beers and cider selection is amazing. all the staff care about the beer too, so its well poured.
the food is also amazing - veggies and vegans are really well catered for in addition to carnivores. chilli heads will be in heaven with the burger options (one of them includes a 6,000,000 sch extract chilli sauce. this will ruin your evening if your not prepared)
great atmopshere in the evenings.
great pub

Another new entry to the Beer Guide and deservedly so on basis of a superb half (Andwell. I think) in a small, friendly pub. Wouldn't call it upmarket but custom clearly geared to some expensive but superb looking burgers which made multiple reservation signs on tables understandable but irritating.

Another busy pub with a decent selection of ales and spirits. It seemed to be doing a roaring trade in food, with all tables taken. There are many intriguing burgers on the menu with strange combinations. They were certainly large but a little pricey. Popular with Saints fans on a matchday. Beers on were Hopback New Year's Ale, Oakleaf Nuptu'Ale & Hole Hearted, Flack Manor Black Jack, Rolling Rock Stone, Suthwick Old Dick & Irving Wee Malc's. Surprised this hasn't been in the Good Beer Guide since 2006. Can easily be combined with a visit to the Guide Dog and I'm giving it the same score.

Excellent range of ales, better range than the Guide Dog in my opinion. Large pub, with some outdoor seating, nice old charachter pub, the new owners have done a great job on it. However, it isn't cheap, particulalry for food and is another one of those pubs that has a dog running around where customers are trying to eat which isn't really needed! Nevertheless a very good pub.

Now under new ownership and called the Rockstone. Excellent range of ales including Andwell Mild and Porter. Pricey(3.20 - 3.40) compared with the nearby(excellent) Guide Dog but I believe it cost a fortune to renovate the place so forgivible. Friendly welcome and the food looked good, although I didn't try any. Probably the best this pub has been in years and well worth a look.

A friend told us that the old Bevois Castle had re-opened as The Rockstone so we decided to have a look! Brilliant place - an excelent mix of beer and food. It's not a restaurant but a smart modern-style bar with 4 beers and a couple of ciders on draught. They do food but we had no problem just drinking at the bar. Really friendly staff and a good pint (try their house beer - Rolling Rock Stone). A couple of the beers always come from the West Midlands. Comfortable seating; clean toilets and a very pleasant atmosphere makes this a pub to be recommended and it's not far from The Guide Dog (a well-known real ale pub). It's a good 15 minute walk from St.Denys station but the UniBus 6 stops outside. Well done to the new owners and good luck for the future. We'll be back (and we won at footie as well!!)

This place has now reopened as The Rockstone

Pub shut since early May which is a shame as this used to be a good local when Dave & Sandy had the pub.
|
Went in here friday 1st august. A nice pub with good beer and a friendly landlord.
|
Was excited to find Hidden Brewery beers, but tasted like vinegar, so went to the Guide Dog instead.

Under new management AGAIN some of the real ales from Oakleaf have vanished which is a shame but you can still get a good pint of Nuptu'ale.
|
this pub is under management and they are a lot better than the last. the food and beer is good and the atmosphere is friendly and relaxed.

Good unpretentious local with decent real ale.
|
Under new management. Good beer (Fagins)and food, especially the Sunday roast. Well worth a visit.
|
This used to a friendly little pub with good beer.
Not anymore

Passed on the New Inn and went to the Castle, great atmosphere with a good friendly crowd. Cellar cooling had packed up so I settled for some Fosters.

Nice enough pub & atmosphere but the beer was not of the standard I expect from a Good Beer Guide entry. My pint of King Alfred was totally unchilled, literally at room temperature on a warm day, and my friend had a pint of Robinson's that was well past it's best.

In the words of Chris Kamara, 'unbelievable jeff' Great pub, friendly atmosphere created by the owners and regulars. The home of Sporting Club Portswood.

Greatest sponsorship deal in history.forget your vodafones, your fly emirates, your holstens, theres only one way forward.for the time being...........................dave and sandy

the first 2 comments about this pub are totally incorrect. it's a small traditional pub with a great atmosphere. moved into area 6 months ago and now use it frequently, certainly not a gay place nor full of pikies. they serve great food excellent cask ales. dave & sandy (lanlord & landlady) are really friendly.were the writers of the first comments SERIOUSLY under the influence of alcohol and mistook this place for their own local? with regards to the s&m can you please let us know where it really happens!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

FANTASTIC - best gay pub in east Southampton, with regular monthly S&M nights and drag queens doing karaoke at weekends. Sexy atmosphere and bar staff - FULLY RECOMMENDED!

Rubbish. Took a pub crawl of 35 in there and the landlady went ape. Told us to drink up then Fu#@ off? Nice woman. Funny thing was the pub was empty and they could do with the business. Also this pub hosts a good landlord, polite witty and intelligent (is this poss?) However it hosts quite a few pikeys (all who live within a stones throw and are very, very ugly), who support SFC....

Nice pub with pool table, jukebox etc. The people that run it are really welcoming and do a great full english at weekends. Great if you fancy chilling out with a few beers there are normally seats and tables available unlike many other pubs in the area.
