Redeveloped as housing - the pub as a house, with 6 flats built in what was the garden.

Sad news about this pub closing ... I never got the chance to visit, but our customers all talk fondly of the place.
ptg - 24 Apr 2010 13:38
Never been in (looks a little intimidating) however apparently it's been sold to a property developer... Expect someone to try and close it soon....

Hmm. OK. Has a large rear garden which you wouldn't expect from the outside. IPA was OK. Didn't stay long as locals seemed miffed we were occupying seats near the television.

If i was to give this pub a reference. I'd put "no comment"

Estate pub that is not particularly visitor friendly but no doubt serves its regulars well. It could do with a bit of brightening up and is quite attractively decorated on a bit of a naval theme.

Dropped in here when on way to the Morris, Pride was fine. Friendly staff, a few locals and the black labrador sleeping at our feet....but not a place to head for unless you live on the local estate.

Nice corner local, second on my s.wim crawl. Beer was poor though. Staff were nice and locals quite friendly.

Whenever I have been in here the service has been efficient and very friendly. It has a certain degree of old world charm - asked what baguettes they did the barmaid shouted into the kitchen to find out the answer. Apparently the lady in the kitchen felt like doing egg or tuna that day - so that was the choice. But I knew that the tuna baguette I ordered was really fresh. I love the place. A real pub of the kind that is becoming rarer by the day. Good prices as well. Don't bother going there if you are looking for a hip joint (if that is the right expression now).

The barmaid did appear to be nice. It's a pub in the middle of an estate that shows the horseracing in the day etc etc. It's quite nice inside despite the dubious colour scheme. One downside is the rubbish beer. I'm sure the wine, if they did it, would be worse but frankly I don't give a damn about that. They do serve Ales or rather GK IPA and Courage Directors (Is that quite the same? ) Certainly no match for the Trafalgar or Sultan. Beer lovers new to the area should also note that Nelson Wines is a short walk away and despite their name they have a tremendous selection of beers from around the globe.

Beer wasn't great when i visited recently. A nice traditional pub, but the music is LOUD in the evening and it can be hard to get served if you are not a regular... The barmaid, esther, was very efficient and friendly though.

One of the most friendly local pubs to be had. Always a good welcome. Paddy and crew do a great job!

Agree about the FAB beer garden, but I don't fancy sitting out there in this weather.
Happy 40th Paddy, mines a pint of black label !!

Went there for a quick one, and I do see what crinkly means about an outside lav. Nice decor and location, away from the main road
Alexh1982 - 20 Dec 2004 09:32
Very friendly staff and customers made it a great night , I'll definitly be back
stevedavis - 17 Dec 2004 15:07
What outside loo Crinkley ?? You must have had a few too many Newcastle brown ale's with your so called northerners ?
johnhannen - 26 Nov 2004 13:52
Funny this pub is in the south as most of the regulars come from up north, OK if you like using the outside loo.
Crinkly - 16 Jul 2004 13:19
Friendly pub with great beer and atmosphere .Like the tent ! in the beer garden .

Lee should talk to Niff! The late entry of this national treasure is perhaps not surprising. Real pub customers are probably not so sad as to write to sites like this. Doh!

Honestly though, this is the best pub in Merton.
Skulevard - 10 Apr 2004 01:47
I last visited this pub in 2001. According to the photograph, it has not changed (well, outside anyway!). Good to see that real ale is still available here. On my last visit I remember the staff being quite friendly too. I could not really understand that it no longer has an entry in the GBG.

The pub makes part of a good crawl - start here and finish in the Sultan.
