Discovered this pub about two years ago and have visited for lunch about a dozen times.
On every visit the service has been really friendly and efficient, food good and the atmosphere welcoming.
They serve food from 12 noon until 9 pm which is an added bonus.

One of the nicest pubs in the area, Friendly staff, Good food and drink.
I visit regularly with friends and family. Good atmosphere. Good portions.
Recently decided to go to one of their entertainment nights (22/10/2011). We had a ball, food was lovely, Singer was brilliant (Luther Vandross style). Can't wait for the next one in November. (already booked).
Excellent fish selection and country fair, my favourite is Game pie or Steak and Kidney pudding.
Lovely big fire on winter nights.

Avoid this place. It is over-priced and run-down. The owners are clearly relying too much on the location and rural setting as a selling point for this place, which is a real shame. The Woodman could really be so much more.
Yes, the views from the garden are pretty, and you would be hard pressed to find a pub in southern Essex with such fantastic scenery. However this is where the positives begin and end. This pub should not use food as a selling point at all. The prices are totally ridiculous (�5-6 per starter, �10-15 main) for the poor quality of ingredients used. The bar staff do not appear to want to be there other than to chat and gossip with the regulars upon which I dare say the owners so heavily financially rely. If they hadn't been in uniforms and been stood behind the bar, I would never have known that they worked there. Our plates were left to accumulate where we sat and no-one came out to the patio area to clear them away. No-one really cared whether we liked the food or not. They had our money and that appeared to be the important thing.
In terms of drink, there are the usual steadfast options of lagers and wines, and a few standard Shepherd Neame ales available, but nothing that stands out from the crowd.

Very enjoyable food served at this isolated country pubs with views onto the gently rolling hills, which looked very pretty on a lovely snowy day. Beerwise it's the usual Shep Neame fare, which I have to say I'm no fan of, but it was kept well and the Master Brew was best of the average, watery bunch.

served rotten black on the inside jacket potatos n said it aint there fault and not the chefs thought for sending out rotten food so wt is he a cheff for he cut it and added the filling wt is he not quallifyeid to serve ppl food or a cheap empolye that serves rubiish food we normally spend well over 100 pound in there never again after the insulting food and insulting my intellagents wen complaing about the food never again

Yes to three previous comments - dropped by this place only last weekend and pulled over for a Saturday afternoon meal - food served all day was excellent and the ONE pump of Shepherds Neame ale was fine. Plenty busy and nice to see with good bar staff that were pleasant welcomers and able servers of food and drinks. I don't give ten points so nine is an exceelent score and eight here supports that. A delight to have visited.

Great pub with excellent food and a very novel system of letting you know when your food is ready!! Very popular so can get busy. Lovely, spacious beer garden and a nice play area for kids too. Ample parking spaces.

excellent pub with extensive play area for children and also large field below garden area suitable for football etc.
food is good and menu reasonably priced and extensive but at busy periods can wait up to 3 hours from placing order but staff volunteer waiting time before you order.
good friendly efficient staff.

Umpteenth century with loads of brass nicnaks,in in fact,covered in them,log fires in winter,Dining area smoking thro'out but ventilated,No sprogs permitted in any inside area(thank god) No fruit M/C and unobtrusive background music only.
Large garden with play area (sprogs are allowed in here)and over the brook is a 5 acre field of mown grass leading down to the river Roding,What more can I say except that this is my 'local'and a good boozer.
