My final stop of the day was the Star Inn, the only Penkridge pub in the current Good Beer Guide. But, of the 3 I tried, I have to say that this was easily the worst. The outdoor drinking area was packed with people enjoying the Saturday afternoon sunshine. Inside was busy too and there was an orderly queue for the bar, which I joined, only to find a local walking to the side of me and getting served straight away. It's always disappointing when bar staff (I'm fairly sure it was the landlord) serve people out of order. If unsure, just ask! The ale range was all from Marston's - Thwaite's Wainwright & Lancaster Bomber, Banks's Amber Ale, Jenning's Cocker Hoop & Brakspear Jericho Pale Ale. Poor service and below average ale selection makes this a pretty ordinary pub.

As of end December 2013 we can support the three previous reports: well worth a side trip. Little to add, even to the 2009 report. Very good. Welcoming and friendly. Good selection of bar snacks at sensible prices. Good service. Obviously a popular place for the regulars/locals - good Saturday afternoon atmosphere.

Good pints of Ringwood 49er last night and nice to see a busy but friendly pub on a Saturday night. By far the best pub in the area and worth a small diversion off the main road or M6 to find it.

Good selection of ales and bar staff provide a good quality service. Recommended.

A lovely looking brick and timber building in the market place, with a beer patio. The inside, while much altered, retains a traditional feel, with a nice fire place and very clean seating and tables. It is open plan around the bar, with a 'quiet' tv (watching England U21s), unobtrusive music and dart board. I took a liking to this place from the start.
The clientele were mixed and decent people from what i could tell, the service was friendly and even when a mix up in a drinks order occurred, it was sorted with a smile.
The Beer range consisted of usual stuff, with Banks's MILd and bitter on cask, the MILD being very nice. As a Banks's pub, it had on Brakspear Hooray Henry and Jennings Cocker Hoop, which are basic at the moment and the only little let down
Will be back

Returned to this pub whilst passing through Penkridge on the canal. I have to be fair. No short measures this time and very pleasant bar staff. Guest beers changed whilst I was there - and the Wychwood was excellent. Certainly a very pleasant pub in which to sink a pint.

Attractive looking pub from the outside and a friendly welcome within.Range of Marstons real ales with very well kept Cocker Hoop.Didnt try the food but most other customers were eating and it looked good, and the mixed grill was seriously large. After 9pm The Star becomes a real community pub, darts can be played and there is a good atmosphere.Possibly the best pub in Penkridge.

CAMRA has selected this pub for the GBG and should rethink. My pint of guest was such a short measure I took it back for a top up. The bar maid (manageress I thought) was off hand about topping it up and made a point a handing it back still with half inch of froth. The attitude was awful but with so many people about it was impossible to challenge it further without making a major fuss. One to strike off the list in my view.

Typical but pleasant Banks pub - Beer OK and very welcoming

Lots of bare bricks, beams and open fires in this historic friendly village pub. Popular with locals and visitors alike, the pub features a wide range of ales and lagers including well kept Banks. Limited range of food, fruit machine and tables on patio outside. Car parking available.
