Old style exterior belies the corporate interior. Though not as bad a job as many. Ale (as noted) was not too adventurous a selection from Cornwall - The Proper Job was a nice pint though and warranted a refill. Okay for what it is.

This used to be a regular drinks spot 25 years a go. So on a day visit back to Pompey I nipped in for a midweek lunch time pint. Outside it was the same old place, nice tiles, big windows and dull paint. Inside, large, wooden flooring, plenty of seats and a very friendly bar maid. A proper inner city pub. But on the downside the former Dorchester ales are not to be seen. Now its flaming national corporate Doom Pride from far off Cornishshire and Londonville (by way of the former brewery in Horndean). For a place that has student nights one would have thought at least two pumps for local ale. This was the only down side apart from the awful music (some kind of off key jazz). Yes I would use again, but sort the beer out.

Comfortable pub. Not as polished as the Barley Mow / Hole in the Wall nearby but the barmaid and regulars were welcoming including Bella the dog. Tiled inside even if some of the edges were a little worn. Couple of pints of Thatchers Gold. Would recomend these three pubs on a mini pub crawl just south of the city centre. No seats at the adjacent King's Street Tavern but probably a nice few hours drinking to be had in this little stretch of residential roads.

popped in here after walking past the empty and deserted King st. tavern, although not full(about 20 people), it had a nice atmosphere, good local ales, real cider and a friendly landlord, just how a pub should be

Great, friendly backstreet local with good beer from local breweries. More down-market than the nearby King St Tavern, but the two pubs complement each other nicely.

Very good backstreet local's pub which, on Saturday afternoon, was very welcoming to us visiting strangers. There is one large bar with alcoves on the left foa pool table and, notably, a bar billiards table. To the right the bar extends, past a table football machine, an upright piano, bookshelf and board games, to an serving area for the advertised Sunday carvery. There is lots of old carving and some nice stained glass and generally the place was clean and tidy.

To the rear there is a walled beer garden with a covered smoking area complete with sofa, traditional beer garden tables and a covered bbq area. The rear wall is, at the moment covered in glorious flaming red autumn leaves from a tree in the garden beyond.

The friendly, wlcoming landlord seemed well informed about his ales, which on Saturday were Bottle Shop Porter, London Pride, fff Moondance, Bowman Swift One and Oakleaf Pompey Royal. There was also a real cider. The Porter was very more-ish and my friends raved about the Moondance.

There was some good background music - old reggae and new wave and a good turnover of relaxed clientele through a very pleasant afternoon.

Well worth searching out if you are down in this neck of the woods.

Excellent sidestreet pub. Very large interior that sports a pool table, table football AND sparkly new bar billiards table. Good revolving range of local ales, usually four on at any time. Friendly bar staff and locals. Well worth a visit along with the neighbouring King Street Tavern.

In agreement with other postings, the pub has changed hands and has a very friendly landlord. Now back on the agenda of a pub worth visiting again.

Dropped in one afternoon when it was quiet. Bar man/landlord very friendly chap. Reasonably range of beer and comfortable decor.

A much improved pub, a smaller range of real ales, but a lot better kept, worth a visit

top pub, friendly atmosphere - has the feel of a traditional local without there being tumbleweed when you walk in. good beer, friendly staff, highly recommended...

The pub is still good but sadly has a new landlord (who looks exactly like a baboon)and the pub has got rougher. The last time I was in there he deliberately served a local who came to the bar after me.
