lovely traditional old pub, the oldest in Folkestone apparantly, Abbott and GK ipa always on with an interesting guest always on and always well kept, the food is tops and one of the best fish and chips anywhere in the land

on a snowy cold thursday night. what better is there than a real coal fire and a pint of real ale?. well at the british lion you get both. intresting choice of beer though.living in guiseley i was suprised to see a wharfebank and a saltaire brewerys beer both brewed 3 miles from where i live yet 260 miles from home. any way the abbotts was on top form, i noticed the menu sourced all it food locally, and there was fresh folkestone crab {not frozen}although it would have been that nite ...lol. oh and thanks to the folk who roasted the chestnuts on the fire, they were superb

An attractive exterior which shows the buildings age, it claims to be the oldest in Folkestone. Paid two visits recently, walking in on an 18th Birthday party on the first but we were still looked after. The second visit was quieter and we had time to sample the guest ales, I thinks it's a Greene King pub but they usually have two guests. The Double Maxim was drinkable but probbaly on it's way out but the Butcombe IPA was top class. A good pub and I'd recommend a visit, combined with the Guildhall just up the road.

Excellent pub, justifiably packed with Sunday lunchtime drinkers and diners. Five handpumps (albeit two with Greene King IPA), including an excellent Butcombe Brunel IPA (deceptively strong at 5%). Lots of nibbles on the bar as you would expect at a traditional place like this. Thoroughly recommended.

A nice town centre bolt hole with good beer and food. I'd be happy to come back any time.

Four ales on two of which Id never seen before. And chillied pickled eggs too. We stayed in this place for quite a while. Chatting to the barman it transpires this place co-ordinates its beer list with the Guildhall down the road to cater for those who visit the town for a pub crawl. Nice to know someones thinking of me

Located in a quiet mews just a few steps off the main shopping street, although much altered has been on the site since the 15th century and proudly boasts that its the oldest in town. Greene King IPA and Abbot are permanent ales augmented by a couple of interesting guest ales. The essence of friendliness and any visitor is genuinely made to feel at home.

Great pub with an enthusiastic welcoming landlord.
A good selection of real ale in good condition which unfortunately included two Greene King beers (apparently the locals like them). The guest beer was from Yorkshires Daleside brewery.
This pub shares it's postcode with the also excellent "Guildhall" just down the hill and the two landlords try to complement each others beer by not duplicating the choice.
Get in there and avoid the awful Wetherspoons "Drunks Paradise" at the bottom of the hill.

Cosy little pub with excellent beer and good, reasonably priced food. Separate non-smoking eating area, and a small, sheletered patio area.
Busy last ( Bank Holiday ) at lunchtime, which I feel speaks volumes for the food.
Friendly staff and friendly punters, so it warrants a worthy 6/10.

Great beer and food coupled with very friendly and helpful landlord, well worth a visit

Good food, beer well kept, must go back again soon

Superb ambience, the Abbot Ale is the best kept I know. Excellent place, and good food too.
|
Our favourite. The best food in town, always perfectly cooked and huge portions!
Great service from Landlords Nick & Dee, and Bar staff Denis, Sue and Becky. Not forgetting the trojan work upstairs in the kitchen.
Wonderful atmosphere and friendly locals will make any visiotrs feel welcome.
They don;t get much better than this!

The British Lion is a fantastic pub in the heart of the Bayle which is synonymous which quality food and real ale - Certainly worthy of a visit if ever in Folkestone.
|
i have never been there myself, but have heard good things from many people, paticularly about the food!

A real old pub which is hidden away near the churchyard. Serves Green King ales and guests and has a separate area for food. Nice old building, a library "snug" and some intriguing doors that you imagine could once have lead to secret passages. Closes in the afternoons.

Nice small friendly pub, second visit there. Food is out of this world, and you also get plenty of it,good value for money.
