This place had been keeping erratic opening hours for ages then closed down in summer of 2018. Its now boarded up and the upper parts look to be empty too. It has an 'all enquiries' board outside so could potentially come back but from what I can see, this closure will unfortunately not be much of a loss.
Hey ho.

Now a former pub.
The Golden Lion in Stanley Road is a "safe" pub.
The beer range is a bit limited, but, the pub has just been brought from Greene King by an independent so hopefully that will soon be changing for the better.
The interior could do with some upkeep, but, again hopefully will be changing soon (see above).
The Karaoke on a Friday (and sometimes Saturday) gets quite busy but it's a really friendly crowd (which is saying something for Croydon).
Not tried the food so can't comment on that, although have heard good comments about the Sunday lunch.
For an area like Croydon which has a limited number of "safe" pubs, this one along with The Oval & Green Dragon are about as good as it gets.

Once inside the décor is very average, uninspiring. Not many places to sit when busy, the beer garden is literally just a small smoking area out the back with a wooden bench. They do all the usual draft lagers and a couple of real ales. They have live music/karaoke at weekends, as well as a small pool table. Never tried the food so can't comment on that. In the summer they have a BBQ out the back and close of the street next to it. All in all a very average pub, in a very average area.

The beer is OK, the food is good I'm told.......go for the service!!!

Great Pub with the new current owners upholding the amazing reputation this pub's alyways had. Standerd lagers such as, kronenbourg, carling, stella, fosters as well as strongbow are all kept to an excellent condition.
As a guiness and real ale drinker, the lines are kept to a perfect condition , which is reflected in the taste of the drinks. Personally, the guiness and the old speckled hen especially get my mouth watering, tasting better than all of the pubs around this area. But the Abbot ale and the Green kings I.P.A are also spot on.
As many people may know, the Earl has always had a good reputation for food, and i still does to this day! they serve a great sunday roast and on a nice summer day you can enjoy your meal in the spacious beer garden. (Also with a heater in the winter days, if you want a fag!)
Finally, a lot of pubs are deprived of REAL music being played at their venue, but certainly not here! Alot of music nights are being set up consisting of live music on a friday , karaoke on a saturday and then to wind down, an excellent 'open mic' night on a sunday evening. As a musician myself It's a shame to see that music in pubs i a dying thing, However i have faith that this pub will bring that old feeling back into croydon and let people know that music isn't dead, because all you have to do is come down to this pub!!!
I would highly recomend that if you ever get a chance to pop into this pub, dont hesitate, go in and enjoy the friendly atmosphere that is holds!
Great beer, great food, great music and great punters! What more could you want!!!!!!!!!!

Great Pub, Great atmosphere, Friendly staff and very good food a great allrounder for all age groups featuring themed nights, such as Russian night every friday also kareoke and open mike nights.

Hello cowabunga. Guess what the carpet has been renewed and the pub repainted!
Howzat?
Dear new managers of the Eldon.
If you rip out the carpet (it's grim), get some new furniture in, maybe a few plants and some nice soft furnishings, you will have the makings of a really good pub. There is no one in the area running a nice big space like yours with any panache. You could have a really decent market and profit if you focus on real ales and food and target the pub towards middle class professionals, of which the area has plenty.
Think big, go for a high end approach and watch your business grow. At the moment you have no unique selling point in the area and the Crown and Sceptre, just across the Road is much nicer. I know which I'd choose as a drinker.
I tried the Eldon on Saturday , the previous posters have got it right it is in excellent hands, I tried the Bonkers Conkers, a decent beer.
Great pub lovely food and a lovely couple now running it
This is going to be one of the best Pubs in Croydon. The couple that have taken it over are one of the best you can get. They are really up for a laugh but know how to run a pub.
Landlord seemed friendly enough but it was one of those pubs as soon as you walk in everyone stops what they are doing and looks in your direction.
This pub suffers from a phobia when topping up a pint. I have voted with my feet and will not use this pub again.A little cliquey for most people taste.
Bog standard pub, shame it's a GK pub as it means that any real ale is the repulsive GK IPA and other than that it's generic cooking lagers.
Have been in to the Earl before a few years back and always found it to be friendly enough, went back again a couple of weeks ago for a pint on a Saturday night and wasn't disappointed, it was busy but the bar staff were really friendly and remembered the round which is always a good sign. Not sure I'd go there on a regular basis but definately wouldn't avoid it. Previous posters are right about there being a good selection of pubs locally!
Don't know which pub the previous comments were about but it certainly isn't this one. Bad beer, looks crap, staff miserable as hell. Don't know why people go in as there are 2 excellent pubs within spitting distance of it! Avoid at all costs.
Great pub, really friendly atmosphere and staff ice cold lager in a clean glass. Spent an entire evening there and thoroughly enjoyed it !
I walked past this place (didn't go in as I don't like Greene King beers) and it's currently undergoing a refurbishment (although still open for business) so the brewery obviously agrees with Steve!
Nice traditional Greene King pub, well worth dropping in if passing by. Not sure why Steve thinks "a bit of a refurb" is called for - seems fine as it is to me
Nice pub, although in need of a bit of a refurb. The staff are very pleasant, and there's a pool table to keep yourself amused. I prefer the Crown and Sceptre opposite just for decor, but there isn't much in it.
My favourite pub in Croydon. Have been drinking here regularly for about 3 years now. The prices are about the same as you'll find in most pubs in the area and the food is home cooked (the beef stew is a gem on winter days). The landlord and landlady are very friendly as are the regulars who drink here. I am yet to see any kind of bother in this place unlike alot of other pubs in the area.
