Can't quite put my finger on it, but there is something about this pub that I like. There was a fair selection of ale on my visits, no complaints. The only thing that strikes me as a bit odd is that you have to walk through the restaurant area at the rear of the pub to get to the toilets. I'm sure the diners must love that when it's busy!

With Lowry still at the bar this pub has a good atmosphere but at £3.40 a pint I'll stick to the Grey Horse. Food was extortionate although it looked good. but paying over £13 for liver and bacon seems to be a rip-off.

Called in to shelter from a downpour on Monday lunchtime and the place was heaving with Christmas week drinkers. Great atmosphere and attentive barstaff. A bit on the cosy side if its busy but that sort of adds to the place. The JW Lees Supernova I had was excellent.

Great pub just off the throng of shoppers, good atmosphere and the ales not bad too, choice of 3 I opted for a festive Santas Special, couldn't see the pump to identify the brewer. Popped in on a Sunday, quite busy but served quickly, not too many dining, there was a band on later, blues I think. Depending on where you sit in the dining area you might have to put up with people passing to and from the toilets.
Going to call back another Sunday and stop for the band, think it could be quite a good night.

My main gripe with this place is that it's expensive, especially when it comes to food. However, I've always had good beer and food, usually served by good staff. One barman in particular is spot on - really efficient yet friendly with it. Great looking place and definitely worth the occasional visit.

There is a lifesize bronze of LS Lowry sat at the bar now.
A permenant monument apparently, as it was one of his old haunts

Well decorated and cosy City Centre boozer. Always reminds me of Cheers for the steps down to it and the semi circular bar! Restaurant area in the back bit.

Love Sam's, always pop in for a pint & a meal when we're in Manchester.

Visit this place on a regular basis to have a drink and have also eaten in the restaurant 3 times. Has 4 handpumps usually selling Black Sheep, Boddingtons and Sams Special (which is brewed for them by Coach House). It's an OK pint but pricey. The food is good and also pricey. It will cost you about 12 for homemade pudding and chips, but it is excellent. Not really a place to go for the beer, we go more for the friendly chat, always has a buzz about the place but can get very busy just after 5 p.m.

Recently eaten in Sam's, the first time in about three years. Good food, good service, good atmosphere. A little disappointed that there was only one cask ale on and the leffe was 5.20 a pint! However, still a cracking place.

Decent city centre pub that does great food. Cosy tiled interior. Gets busy very quickly. The ale was Black Sheep when I was last in. Excellent restaurant as well. Their steak and kidney pudding is superb.
|
Lovely bathhouse style tiled interior. High ceilings. Rod-iron wine cages. A bit expensive for pints. The menu looked quite delicatable however unavailable before 5pm. Not so much a pub as it is a nice place to eat and try the wine selection.

Just as well known for it's food rather than drink, you can usually get a choice of ales in here. On the expensive side. Bar staff very attentive; had a pint of Boddies in there the other week.

Sam's is the sister pub to the famous Mr. Thomas's Chop House just down the road. Whereas in Mr. Thomas's food is only served at lunchtime, here there is a specially set aside dining room, where you can have a meal in the evening, if you fancy. Food is also available earlier on in the more traditional pub-style outside the main restaurant.
Once down the stairs, the pub itself is warm and welcoming, with a number of different real ales available (although when I went in, only Bodington's and the slightly insipid Sam's Special were on). The bar, on your left as you enter, is rounded and serves quickly, despite the number of people that were in at the time. Seating areas are on both sides of the bar, one smaller and more hidden, the other on a slightly raised platform (with a piano that actually works!).
My only minor gripe is that you seem to have to go through the dining room to get to the toilets, which seemed a bit weird to me - but overall this is a well kept, warm, friendly place. I'll be back next time when I hope the Black Sheep will be back on.
