The building lives on, with the top two floor converted into flats and the ground floor rumoured to have gone to Tesco. Even the stables have survived for now. The pub garden has been sold separately for development into an apartment block.

Another pub that back in the 1980's was a lovely friendly place to drink. I used to take my study work there in the evening when I was quaifying in my mid twenties and it used to be a really calm place to drink. Whitton Dene was a place that people aspired to live believe-it-or-not and the pub was always well frquented by decent artisans and proffessional people. The area has changed now and as such this has become another pub that has died away...So very sad that Pubs cannot make a decent go of it and are closing at the rate of 5 per week across the UK.

Had "Closed for refurbishment" pinned around the outside. and now a commercial letting sign as gone up. It's a wonderful building and I'll be sorry to see it go.

Now closed and under security monitoring

This pub is no longer called The Great Western. Its now the "Blue Ginger Bar". The worst name I have ever heard! It has a Indian restaurant out the back, I haven't tried the food so can't comment. This place still needs a lot of work, I live local and was with high hopes when it was taken over and the work started, but it hasn't met the mark. The name is all wrong I just don't want to drink in a pub called The Blue Ginger!

The South Western was the worst pub in the Whitton area, even out doing the Admiral Nelson (which is some feat). It wasnt in need of renovation, just blowing up and being replaced with something, in fact anything else. Imagine my surprise when I saw that it was been turned into Blue Ginger Bar with the sort of neon sign you only find on an establishment in Soho. However, the bar is exactly the same. The only difference is that it now sells Indian cuisine. It is always a shame to see a pub close down, but in this case, a block of flats would be preferably.

youll all be pleased to know i moved away from the area because of this pub and the junk that was taking place in and out side this hole... now they have closed it down ..typical. its now changed name to the blue ginger bar... indian cuisine.. lets see how that does... Good luck!!!

Pubs a dump full of chavs single parented council house scum beer qualitys rubbish and the placehas a smell lingering all around it. Not a good place for food either all cheap junk. Barmaid was very friendly though and the gardens not to bad but overall not very good. 2/10

this is a proper old geezers pub that sometimes can surprise you with a younger trendier crowd back in the depths of the seated area, its rare but happened to me a number of times.(the chavs are at the bar or in the pool room, fairly easily avoided).
but on a normal/bad day its a bit smelly & old fashioned inside. generally the beer & lager is good & a few pence cheaper than pubs in more popular spots.
5/10

Being, quite literally, on the wrong side of the tracks, the South Western is spiritually part of Whitton. This mean that if you are in any way weird then you should tread carefully and avoid the pool room at the back. To all else I am sure you would be welcome. This pub has nothing much to offer other than friendly service and a reasonably priced pint. Having said that a certain grandiose air pervades the interior decor giving it a slight 'oldy worldy' feel that is pleasing to the eye. Good for: Friday afternoon playing pool and Sunday afternoon hair of the dog
