Now called the Duchess of Cambridge. Handy for both train stations. 3 ales on. We were immediately asked if we'd booked and if we wanted to eat, but when we said no and no there wasn't a problem and we were allowed to sit and enjoy a few pints.

I think I've been here before when it was the Slug & Lettuce. Now it is a fairly upmarket McMullens pub with prices to match the clientele it is trying to attract. 3 of their ales were on - Duchess, County & IPA. The Duchess was reasonable. Décor is ok. But you could hardly describe it as traditional. In an ideal location, opposite the castle, this pub served as a good meeting place.

P.S. Forgot to mention - It is now called "The Duchess of Cambridge"

This pub has been through two changes since the last report was written. It is now owned by McMullen's Brewery of Hertford and has been done out ina contemporary cafe bar/bistro style with many tables set up for dining although you can still get a drink without being "encouraged to eat". There is a small terrace at the back (for smokers mainly) and the whole place is quite pleasant and in a superb position right opposite the castle. Bar snacks and main meals are available and there were three cask beers on when we visited (McMullens Cask/Country and IPA). Tea and coffee appeared to be good value as did the menu. If you can get a window seat it is a terrific place to sit and watch the world go by!

Bluddy good club sandwiches! Premium spirits and 35ml, quite expensive, but less than a 2 min walk from Lloyds!! Nice staff... it is quite small but so's everywhere (it's a small town!) Excellent for chilling out mid week for a couple of hours leading into the evening.

Hmm. Not sure I agree with the rest of the comments. The pub bar is far too small - big delays in getting served. The food (although nice) was quite expensive and looked lost on enormous plates when it arrived. Overall, bit of a nightmare when busy, but sitting down, having a few pints in the afternoon and laughing at the tourists is enjoyable.

The Slug and Lettuce is ok... There are some nice comfortable sofa's. But this pub gets really smokey (not nice).
But on the whole its a good vibrant bar for the weekends.
