Worst pint of Cornish Coaster I've ever had, not off or anything but luke warm and not very nice.

A large number of real ale on offer, most good quality but a couple not the best.. might have been near the end of the barrel perhaps.

A open plan pub with a few "interesting" and sweary customers, mainly older men.

Good service from the barstaff.

A wide, but slightly uninspiring, selection of ales though a well kept Harveys Dark Mild was a welcome change from Best.
MrTerrific - 30 Aug 2013 15:53
Always a good selection of ales, but they're not always in good form. The pub is let down by noise and bad language.
79Thatcherite - 26 May 2013 15:48
I can see that this is the first rating for a little while! Popped in to have a look before heading off to a rugby match.

Good selection of real ales on, mostly local'ish, sampled two pints of Arundel Old, in fantastic condition and tasted exactly like a Winter brew should.

Ade.The.Raider - 29 Oct 2012 16:42
Am always disappointed by this pub, although a large number of pumps on view I always seem to pick a very mediocre beer, again on Saturday the Harveys Mild was poor, drinkable, but only just, the Taylor landlord slightly better. My mate's Itchen Valley Pure Gold was also Hazy and tired. Better quality beer available in other shoreham pubs.

Sorry PubbCrawlerOne I found this to be a friendly and open pub! great range of beers all perfectly kept judging by the 5 I tried out. The barman was attentive, the locals chatty and I was made to feel welcome whilst waiting for a friend to collect me.
The_Sloven - 3 Mar 2011 15:07
Awful pub.

I would honestly say that this is the one of the most unfriendly pubs in the UK.

Forget it if you are not a local.

I had the mis-fortune of popping whilst changing trains, and the bar man looked at me and turned his back and walked round the other side of the bar.

I am in my 40's and work in the City of London as a banker, therefore I was dressed appropriately, not tattoos or a hoodie or something like that.

Avoid this unless you like being treated like a criminal.

PubbCrawlerOne - 7 Oct 2010 14:43
the previous review is fairly accurate, I have to say. Definitely worth one whilst waiting for a train or rail replacement bus. Also the most expensive of the three I visited today....all in the Brighton CAMRA passport trail...

An intriguingly incongruous mix is indeed what one finds at this large rail-side pub. The external appearance is charming enough, although its internal decor is perhaps not what one might expect having given the frontage a cursory inspection. Still, mismatches aside it is quite light and airy around the bar. At the risk of generalising too wildly, my experience of pubs adjacent to railways in small towns/villages is that they tend towards the dull and the dowdy; seemingly relying on a mythical captive market generated by rail passengers who sadly, by and large do not even consider dropping into a boozer when they come off the platform, preferring instead to simply get in the car and drive home. Certainly they are not known to be meccas for real ale. The Buckingham is just that - not only does it feature prominently in ale-related literature, its impressive tally of 11 handpumps in a row meets one's eye immediately upon arrival; reminiscent of an arsenal of soldiers presenting arms in unison at their pass-out parade. And, all but 1 of these was occupied on my visit at the weekend! As for range, the policy seems to be to stock around 5 more recognisable brands (Taylor Landlord, Harvey's Best, Young's Ordinary, Ringwood Best, that sort of thing), and up to 5 lesser-known breeds, some local, some otherwise. And I believe at least 1 real cider featured too, which is a welcome touch for apple-ites who look beyond the Magners and Bulmers factory fizz.

All the other usual indicators of a house highly-regarded by the cask cognoscenti are not present however. The clientele - and they numbered many as it was a busy Saturday early evening - were generally down-to-earth working types, and observations suggested more lager-orientated. There were no frills and furbelows. It is lively, to say the least, and does have the vibe of a "sports bar", which is not always everyone's bag. I did leave feeling slightly relieved in a way, despite having appreciated the well-kept beer, attentive service and actually generally clean and happy atmosphere. Perhaps it is good for pubs to successfully supply two distinctly-different ends of the drinking market, so well done to them. But for those who expect the other features that so often go with a the more stereotypical "ale house" template, you might wish to think again. There are plenty of pubs in the area to try as an alternative if this one doesn't float your boat.

8/10 essentially because of their keen efforts on the cask front, which as many know I will always prioritise. Sadly though, without the beers it would struggle to be a 5 for me.

huge range of ales that are well kept, friendly enough, but apart from the focus on ales its basically a sky sports, shouty, pissed blokes at the bar sort of place - ales are good though.
parmantom - 24 Oct 2009 15:52
Good choice of beers and good service. Not a bad place but some people would call it scruffy. Very handy for the station but don't leave it too late to get your train if you're heading east or you'll get caught on the wrong side of the tracks! Would visit again if ever i'm in the area, no problem.
ZapuTheSnake - 21 Jun 2009 13:31
Easily the best pub in Shoreham. Might not be the flashiest, but you can spend all day in here and feel amongst friends without knowing anyone. Brilliant beer, I've always found the bar staff excellent, grub's OK. It is always popular, nice garden out the back on summers days. Give it a try, it's worth it. The Sussex is excellent.
lumponmyhead - 30 Apr 2009 20:07
9 real ales on when i was in serveral weeks back couldnt ask for a better pub.
superseagulls - 8 Feb 2009 15:57
Surprisingly, a good pub opposite the railway station, if by good you mean somewhere that looks and feels like a CAMRA convention! Several real ales and several gentlemen savouring them at the bar. I will have to return to give Shoreham a proper going over.

My 2nd visit ystdy, my 2nd failure to record the beers on offer, sorry. 10handpumps, 5 fairly mainstream regulars, 5 more interesting changing guests. Two of our party chose a beer that came up looking good but tasting awful, it was changed without question & the pumpclip immediately reversed. Five minutes later the guv sent over another two halves of our chosen replacement by way of apology! Outstanding customer relations! Re shoreleaf's comments on 'barflies', yes, perhaps the barstools in front of the bank of handpumps should be moved to enable easier viewing of the selection.
trainman - 23 Nov 2008 12:28
I had high expections with this pub knowing it had many real ales on tap....however I do not have much to recommend it. Yes the beers were reasonable, but the over riding impression was the attitude of ALL the bar staff, which was dreadful. Absolutely no sense of humour and a complete lack of understanding of the basics of customer service added up to a very bad experience.
I cannot understand how such poor service can be tolerated by the good folk of Shoreham on Sea. Perhaps a change of management is required.............
Four.one - 31 Aug 2008 16:39
Beer is always spot on. Friendly pub. one moan is the difficulty getting past the barfly's
shoreleaf - 8 May 2008 16:16

Memory very hazy when I reached here, but do remember there being lots of beer and enjoying it...summer beer trip down to Sussex on the cards I think.
Quinno - 2 Apr 2008 19:19
Rather busy and not very relaxing on a Good Friday afternoon. Excellent range of ales though, and very convenient for the station.
Rich66 - 22 Mar 2008 22:33
I went on a friday evening at about 7. Lively atmosphere with a couple arm wrestling on a bar stool when I walked in. He won. Loads of well kept real ale available but strangely most punters drinking lager.
brightondrinker - 28 Nov 2007 19:28
Eleven handpumps present themselves as you enter; too much choice to list all here, but the Hepworths Harvest and Grand Union Stout were very good. L-shaped bar leads round to large plasma at far end, then out to a beer garden. Carpeted throughout, tables and seating around outer walls which are decorated with photos, prints, mirrors & awards. Good stuff.
trainman - 18 Nov 2007 12:07
This was another great pub to visit. 11 handpumps to choose from and the beers were great too. It was a hot day and we stayed in the lovely suntrap of a garden enjoying the ales....heaven.
gillhalfpint - 5 Jun 2007 10:30
Started a couple of nights off here, it's by the station so you have to really (assuming you arrive by train that is). Beer has been very good and choice excellent - and that's the main thing here.
Harlap - 24 May 2007 13:39
Good pub when we visited on a Sat afternoon, very busy with what seemed a varied age group of regulars. All very friendly, good pint of Landlord and staff seemed friendly enough. Good to see The Burrell over the road is being knocked down, when I worked in Shoreham 15 years ago the burrell was the place to be seen if you wanted a fight.
THEALMIGHTYLALA - 25 Mar 2007 19:20
Lovely community pub, have been there on a few occasions now as the range and quality of the real ales is excellent. Friendly staff and landlord (Keith, I think). Only downside is that the music is not very varied - this appears to be monopolised by some guy with ginger hair miming with a guitar to a rather poor quality backing track - dreadful to be honest, still the locals seem to like him.
anonymous - 30 Jan 2007 13:24
What do you want from a pub 11 real ales+usual fizzy drinks live music (it can get loud) big screen football/grand prix/super bikes good food lunches & weekends friendly staff & punters just what a pub should be if you dont like it one night (music/football(rugby is done on sufference)try another something for everyone (even tea & coffee???)
Neilmud - 18 Nov 2006 01:22
I have visited for a Sunday lunch drink several times a good selection of real ales and have always had a good pint with fair service
uwho - 19 Sep 2006 23:29
Noisy and horrible.
hrse12 - 1 Aug 2006 00:08
Had a very good pint of Grand Union Wheat Beer. 11 real ales in all, as usual, including a mild from Greene King, which you don't often find in GK's own pubs in the area!
southdown12jack - 31 Jul 2006 16:02
Throw away the old pint glasses and invest in some new ones. I am sure that the old glass is preventing us from enjoying a pint by constant dishwashing.
anonymous - 12 Mar 2006 12:58
Great "local" pub with an impressive range of well-kept real ales. Great pint of Hopback Summer Lightning. Only minus point - doesn't do food in the evenings!
fellwalker - 7 Mar 2006 01:27
An amazing 11 ales and two ciders, occasional live music and beer
festivals. Shoreham is well provided with pubs for a small town and this surely one of the very best.
Uncle_Dunkel - 24 Feb 2006 14:47
Great pub, right next to the station.Usually about eight real ales on tap. The best pint of landlord that I have had for a very long time.Biddenden cider straight from the barrel.(ask for it). Will definately be back.
apa - 16 Feb 2006 20:13
Good, honest real ale pub. Excellent range of beers. Good prices.
Roger - 8 Jul 2004 09:42
Situated right next to the level crossing in the centre of Shoreham (handy for getting the train home!), this pub typically features Harveys Best, Hop Back Summer Lightning, and many other excellent beers. Equipped with the usual pub menu, and secluded beer garden, it's another worthy stopping place if you're in town.
