Lovely looking pub. However owners are Racist and its a very rough pub with the locals.
The landlady hates Londoners. Evidently with a passion as we found out.
Both 8oz steaks were over cooked. (Photos were taken as evidence.)
Half pint prawn starter has eggs in every prawn, disgusting!
Landlady argued that there wasn't anything wrong with the food. She shouted at us on our anniversary.
We didn't argue back, just left in tears.
I will write to the Hoo Village Voices to voice these disturbing experiences.

We walked from Rochester and this pub on a sunny Sunday afternoon was well worth the journey.

Nice selection of ales, good service and a fine meal, we were slightly disappointed that they were only serving cold food after our trek but what it was was very enjoyable.

This lovely old pub is situated next door to Upnor Castle. Pleasant, old-fashioned interior with no gimmicks or modernisation. Spacious beer garden at rear. Large number of Shepherd Neame ales on hand-pump. We tried Kent's Best and Whitstable Bay and both were excellent. Service efficient and very friendly. Highly recommended 10/10

As mentioned by others, the Tudor Rose is very deceptive and far larger than you think. You can't drive to this pub, you have to park in the car park at the top of the hill and walk down the old cobbled street towards Upnor Castle.

A fully loaded Shepard Neame pub, I don't drink beer so its all wasted on me.. However my boyfriend does and he was happy. The staff are very friendly and service was very good.

The menu is pretty good and the food we had was way better than my expectations (having previously eaten at the Pier in the Village anything would be better!). The wait for food was short and served nicely.

Not sure if child friendly but the garden at the back is very nice and we had a great few hours at the Tudor. A recommended Pub

On my recent soujourn to the Medway I decided to try and vist as many GBG pubs as possible (or the missus would allow being the designated driver)

I visited this pub the same afternoon as the excellent Kings Arms at the top of the high street. This pub is situated near the bank of the river right next to Upnor Castle.

Going into the pub I noticed 2 old boys propping up the bar and by the shade of red there faces were I guessed that the beer was good.

This pub has the entire range of Shepherd Neame beers. This is excellent for a lot of drinkers but unfortunately for me I am not a massive fan of their beers (give me a pride over a spitfire any day of the week) except Earlybird which is seasonal so wasnt on.

Garden here is excellent. Didnt eat anything but the food smelled fantastic. This place gets 7 out of 10 from me. It would have got an 8 or a 9 if they had had a couple of guest beers

A deceptively large pub from the High Steet appraoch as the small front bar opens out to other areas behind. An SN pub with six ales, two of which were guests..... went against my better judgment and went for Taylors Golden Best (well you don't see it round that often), was a pretty insipid pint, drinkable just about but not something you'd want more of.

A fascinating and quite unique pub. Excellent real ales served in a really friendly atmosphere. Probably the best choice in Upnor. Well worth revisiting

I really like this pub: it has an honesty and an unpretentiousness that appeals to me.

As others have said, it's a Tardis - except that it's divided into a load of different rooms (and I'm not sure I've been in them all yet!).

The welcome is really charming, the food is terrific, and the beer - well, just go and have some...

I came here on 18th June as the pub does Pie and Mash on Thursdays with a free pint for 5.95. The pies are proper pie and mash shop pies which the landlord told us came from Goddard's in Deptford. As I used to live in Deptford it was a little slice of my old stomping ground transported to Kent which was great. The service is fantastic and the landlord is always willing to stop and have a chat. The pub is next door to Upnor Castle and it's always worth a walk down the river to get a breath of fresh air and walk off the splendid pie and mash. If you're in the locality on a Thursday go in and ask for double pie and mash and you won't be disappointed.

The small front bar is quite misleading as the pub opens out with plenty of seating to the rear and, it would seem from other comments, many other rooms I failed to stagger into. The large grassed, walled & planted garden to the rear had many picnic sets and a large round table, under a tented awning, with a revolving granite centre(?). A friendly welcome at the bar and, later, the landlady was most helpful in phoning round to find us return cabs. Good choice of well-kept Sheps beers and definitely, for me, the better pub in Upnor. If you wander down a few yards to the waterfront & look left you will see the proximity of Upnor Castle.

A fascinating rambling collection of rooms connected together in the form of a pub, located half way down a street straight out of Dickens,a bit like Rye but without all them poncy ye olde tat shoppes.Excellent basic PUB grub washed down with a decent looked after pint and river views a short stagger away.Proper pub usually with proper drinkers in the main bar.Ring first to book your grub and ask them the put a bottle of wine in the fridge if that is your thing.Park in the car park at the top of the village and walk down the hilltowards the river ,definately worth a visit.
Kents hidden secret.

The new landlord and landlady have made the Tudor Rose by far the busiest of the 2 Upper Upnor pubs. The food is now excellent and great value. Fri & Sat breakfasts from 9am are a real treat. If it gets loud that's because of the lively locals who are also very friendly but there is always a quiet nook in the rambling rear rooms for those who want some peace. Top quiz on a Monday too.

This used to be a very popular and well run pub with a good selection of guest ales and good value food in a rambling and fascinating maze of a building. It is now a Shepherd Neame pub and attracts loud customers. The Kings Arms up the road, which used to be the second choice pub for when the Rose was too crowded, is now the first choice pub.

Visited Sat 14 May 05. Strange little place, lots of little rooms dotted about. Shame that the weather wasn't so good, as the beer garden looked nice.

The beer range was the full Shepherd Neame, and the staff ensured that a pint was a pint (always a good thing) A birthday party was just starting, and it looked like it was going to be a crazy one.

Worth a visit for the curiosity factor.

Just re-assessed my rating to 6 (was 4) based on the fact that the old guv'nor has gone. I havent been in this boozer for over a year - the previous "comedian" was more than I could stand.

I'll make a visit tonight and report back tomorrow.

Thanks to "anon" who gave us the good news.

Just to let every one know the landlord has now changed! Not the lippy comedian it use to be!

I found this pub when visiting upnor to walk along the river, and was pleasantly surprised. The pubs nice and warm, due to the old coal fire and the staff are even warmer! Good ale and good pub food to, i must recommend the lovely roast! There's also darts and pool on hand. Theres a play area in the large garden, but was a bit to cold for that this time of year. Just the pub when you've had a stroll round upnor!

This is a great pub, superb location overlooking the Medway, Upnor Castle next door, lots of tiny atmospheric rooms - and excellent beer.

So why the four rating ?

Because the guv'nr thinks he a comedian and wants to be the constant centre of attention. His Sunday lunchtime perfomance (when calling the raffle) is particularly disturbing and he has a remarkable ability to be rude to new customers.

Try this boozer; if the landlord gives you any lip - walk out.

Free House with good beer and food.
