Just time for a swift pint of Mobberley Redwinter on this visit - still unchanged retaining it's lounge and bar halves and still the best pub in Warrington. You may need to adjust your watches back to 1974 on entering though.

This was without doubt one of the best pubs I tried on an Easter Saturday visit to Warrington. It's in the main shopping area and attracts a varied clientele. There are two traditional rooms. Locals and the landlord are friendly and open to conversation. The ale range was good - Weetwood Best Bitter, Mallinson's Columbus, Harvey's Sussex Best Bitter, Merlin's Elixir, Lymestone Stone The Crows, Coastal Cornish Porter & Amplified Ales Red Special. The real cider was Thirsty Farmer Medium. I'd definitely return here, as there was little to fault it.

This is a classic style "local" pub in the centre of Warrington, with a traditional two room layout. It was busy on our Saturday evening visit in October, but we managed to grab a table in front of the bar. A decent selection of real ale was on offer and we went for the Black Rock Porter which slipped down nicely.
A pub with character and clientele to match!
A sign on the bar offers £1 baps and 50p pork pies, but on enquiring, it seems they had no pies left.
I'd probably go again if I was out in the centre of Warrington.

Update - the Tipsy Angel beer is outstanding, and less than £3.

Return visit a good decade on, still a real proper pub with micros now. The Xmas Angel brewed here pretty good. Cheap as well.Warrington on the up.

This place look great from the outside.
However, inside it is full of cliques of people who look at strangers suspiciously. The beer I had was absolutely foul !

Was introduced to this pub by a chap I met in another pub in town. Really friendly place, old fashioned in a good way. On my first visit there the cellarman/brewer, Aidan, opened up the brewery and gave me a tour. Brilliant! I've been back half a dozen times, recently with my new other half. The place doesn't change, which is a good thing.

Classic pub. Excellent quality ales, the beer menu is always a good mixture of the ubiquitous pale/hoppy beers and darker beers, including their own brews. I agree with other reviewers that this is the best in town, the reason for me being that it has the qualities I like to find - conversation, (music in other bar isn't intrusive) great staff, and whenever I call in there's always someone I know, although that isn't surprising as I've been going in here for about 25 years!!

Brilliant pub. Quite traditional place, going back to the days of Walker's and later, with a great selection of ale (including their own micro brew). Would go as far as to say best in town.
|
Still the best pub in Warrington - a bit like going in to that ' I Wish I Was in Greenall Whitley Land' ad (the chaingang one that is on You Tube) except you get a decent pint instead of Greenalls.

Unless you're a real fan of Wetherspoons, this is much the best option in Warrington town centre. Old traditional pub where beer and conversation are the rule - the former including a decent mild from their house brewery Tipsy Angel and half a dozen other good ales.
|
a very nice pub where we were the first Dutch who came to drink beer. the guest of freedom is very high, the atmosphere is very good and the beer brewed tastes great. a good cafe with very friendly people definitely come back very soon joke and damar van rijn nederland

Traditional public bar/lounge set up in a timeless (well more late 60's / early 70's as opposed to timeless) style. A number of ales on to slake the thirst of celebrating Wires fans and to drown the sorrows of visiting 'Udders. The White Rose Saracens IPA was particularly nice. Classic town centre pub as they used to be.

brilliant pub, friendly staff who are happy and proud to be part of this pub, they tell u the history, the plans, the tasting notes...how pubs that are not food orientated ought to be with a nice lounge on one side and a bar on the other.
Always our first stop on a ale crawl of Warrington as it is equidistant between Central and Bank Quay

The Lower Angel is going from strength to strength. As reported elsewhere on this page, there has been a continuation of traditional pub values and service since the new manager took over. Ale quality is excellent, almost always a new beer or three to try and also some returning favourites. Also their new microbrewery is about to open under the name of Tipsy Angel. Well Done Andy, Andy, and Aidan, and all the staff.

The best of a bad bunch on my recent visit to Warrington. Old fashioned pub with traditional public bar and lounge frequented by loyal regulars. Tried the Sunburst from Dark Star which although not really to my liking was indeed well kept. Ales were a bit pricey i thought, still in this day and age.................

One of my favourite town centre pubs. Great selection of real ales, all well kept and well served. Friendly service too. Nice to see the pub is usually busy too!
|
I first posted comments about The Lower a while ago, since which time there has been a change of management, yet complete continuity in the atmosphere and beer quality in this classic town-centre pub. Friendly staff and clientele, beer quality top-notch, always plenty of people in there nowadays, in contrast to a few years ago when closure was forced upon the place. Very good to see The Lower thriving in these difficult times. Why aren't we more proud of our brewing and pub heritage? This is an example of what a pub ought to be! When in Warrington, this goes on the "must visit" list.
|
I've posted about this pub before but I went in recently and it was under new management and I'm really pleased to say the beer quality was as good as it's ever been (well, in the 25 years or so I've been going in). There were 3 real ales on on the side of the bar I was in and the two I had were both in superb nick. The new landlord/manager came over and introduced himself which was a nice touch, both he and his staff were friendly and courteous - there's a degree of continuity here as well as the man himself was previously one of the staff working for the previous landlord. Well done the Angel!

Old-fashioned twin bar town local, thankfully surviving through the various redevelopments. Very quiet on a Monday night, and they were on the point of shutting early with many of the stools upturned on the benches. Still, the barman was happy enough to serve another customer whereas many places would just have said "we're closed." Decent selection of real ales in each bar, including a fine Theakstons Dark Mild.
|
Real old fashioned beer drinker pub. One to visit for the real ale drinkers. Micro Brewery due later in 2009.
|
Quality boozer - well dressed and well mannered bar staff/clientele. How a pub should be. Top notch beer. Micro opening soon I believe.
|
Fantastic range of ale's to choose from, sadly pub was dead when visited on a sunday evening so they decided to close up early @ 9pm. But if visiting Warrington and in search of good beer this place is a must!,7/10
|
As a frequent visitor to The Lower, I was sad to see it close in July 2007, but extremely pleased to see it re-open in late 2008, in time for Xmas. A classic pub, with well-kept beer, which we should be proud of, and well done to the new manager, Carsten/Karsten (not sure of the spelling!) and staff. It's nice to see the The Lower now has a regular and more plentiful clientelle once again. I really can't understand why we aren't as proud of our brewing industry and pubs, as the germans are of theirs, and the french are of their wines. As I say, I frequent the Lower so call me biassed if you like, but it gets a 9 from me for tradition and quality.
|
Was in Warrington last weekend, so took another look at this pub. It's certainly back on it's feet again, being busy on Saturday lunchtime. A friendly crowd and decent bar staff accompany something like seven different cask ales. The Old Mill Bitter was superb!
|
Friendly welcome and a great selection of real ales in excellent condition. Wel;l worth a visit!
|
Closed and boarded, a surprise considering how recent the last comment is!
|
agree with most things posted here already. Tne Angel is a rare proper pub, serving real ale, in Warrington town centre, amongst a sea (perhaps descration might be the more correct collective noun) of keg beer and kak lager pubs and grab a granny 'night clubs'. It's only small and its range of beers may have shrunk over the years but it's still there and for that we should be thankful.
|
Popped in for a pint while in Warrington (from the deep south)for work;I was made very welcome and the (Lodden) beer was in excellent nick. A "proper" pub.
|
Where were these famed real ales ? Pretty limited. Is Burton Bitter the summit of your ambitions ?
|
Best real ale pub in Warrington by a mile. Good honest crack about Rugby, Football, etc . A ned free zone, no burberry baseball caps in here.
|
Sell's BURTON ALE -good enough for me son!!!. Yes it's a good ole fashioned 'back street' type Warrington pub. Keep up the good beer.

one of the few remaining men's boozers in warrington or england. worth coming to warrington to experience some real town pub life. all the surrounding pubs are totally awful.
