Gate Inn, Bryants Bottomback to pub details please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.
More than two years since the most recent post.
The Gate still seems to be doing well in terms of food and drink. It's friendly and well run. London Pride and (excellent) Doom Bar were on offer.

I had a drop of Weston's Ravishing Raspberry Cider in this cracking country pub the other day. They also have Thatcher's and Scrumpy Jack on tap, various Kopparbergs, Savanna, Henry Weston's 8.2%, Bulmers, Magners and when they could get it, the locally produced One Eyed Vince (candidate for best cider name this year!)
New owners Graham and Wendy are celebrating this old pub's traditions and character, building up the range of ales (currently IPA Reserve at 5.4%, London Pride, Sharp's Doombar and Abbot, but changing regularly), serving good pub grub at very fair prices and developing a great selection of wines (Prosecco too, hopefully). They hope to field 3 mens darts teams in the winter league and are looking for lady players. The garden is being revitalised, there are tables along the sunny terrace (well, it's been sunny this week anyway!) and we sat outside in the cool of the evening last night enjoying the light of a pretty candle lantern - nice touch, Graham!
Log fires in both bars for the winter. There's a positive buzz and spirit of optimism and generosity about the place - and that's very welcome in the licensed trade these days.

I had a couple of pints of London Pride there yesterday - lovely beer, in good condition. Four of us had a meal and couldn't fault it for quality or value. A good pub that I wouldn't mind as my local.

Great ambience, staff, location etc but the real ale is still woeful! It inspired me to take up home brewing 25 years ago and things have not improved with my first visit back there recently.

Great little pub. Two bars, friendly barman. Only GK beers on, but always well kept. Good sized meals all home cooked.

Now this is a real pub. I have not visited it for some years, but on returning a few Saturdays ago I was not disappointed. I entered the public bar to be greeted by smiling locals and a roaring log fire. Making my way to the bar I was greeted by the friendly barman; who appeared to have a huge personality, but only one tooth. I knew then that all was well.
This place was full of laughter and happy people. Sadly I could only stay for one pint of bitter; the name of which escapes me, but it was it excellent condition.
This is a great summer pub too; with its elevated garden and labyrinth of bird cages (all of which looked very healthy and well looked after).
The other bar was frequented mainly by people eating meals; for which I will return in the near future.

Not shut. Just shut when the person below visited (closed between 3.00 and 5.30 Monday to Thursday). It's a shame when ill-informed people make life harder for small out of the way country pubs by implying that they are closed down in these already difficult times.
I won't comment on the rating as I work there (so know it's open). But as for the previous comments it's unlikely you'll see Chesney Hawkes there, though his family are local and I know his cousin. Also used to be frequented by Noel Edmonds and Fluff Freeman. (Bryants Bottom, Crinkly Bottom... have to ask him yourself but seems to add up to me).
Great in summer time for large garden, new children's play area, and large aviaries. Cozy in winter for real open fires.
Real ales are Abbot, IPA (Greene King), and Speckled Hen. Also have IPA smooth, Ruddles, Fosters, Carling, Stella, Blackthorne, Strongbow, Guinness (extra cold). Prices from 2.60 - 3.05. (Oct '09)
Food is traditional pub food, pretty wide selection, reasonably priced and generous portions. So if you like desserts just have a starter and dessert. Most main mails around 8 (Oct '09)
Function room is available around 10.50/head for a buffet and just under 20/head for 3-course sit-down meal. Can manage about 50 people for a buffet and 40 for a sit-down meal. Disco or solo-performer are licenced but not a full band.

Shut!

Cosy, warm and welcoming, good reasonably priced Sunday lunch. Rather nice to eat outside too on a warm summers day. Recommended pub.

Pub located where you wouldn't expect it - set in the 'middle' of the Chilterns. Greene King IPA and Abott were the beers on offer here - the former was good, not used to IPA being like this! We hung around the basic boozer on the left, on the right is the plusher bar with the menus for the bar food. Wine is not expensive; 8.50-19 but mostly lower end.
|
Good, quite cheap pub food, changing reasonably often. Good service, and a nice atmosphere. Beer OK, but only Greene King: Abbot/IPA not my first choice by a long way.
|
A great pub with some splendid people both sides of the bar, excellent food with lots of specials and a lovely open fire for intery afternoons.

Beautiful spot and the food is good for a decent price.

set in the beautiful countryside hamlet of Bryants Bottom, it's a traditional pub with locals using the public bar, which has a dartboard. Their is another bar, generally used for eating (a good menu), a lovely garden, with a play-area for kids, and also the only pub I know with an aviary! Also has a function-room available for hire. Very popular at weekends with ramblers, cyclists & the like.
