Sorry but I think this place is very poor for a pub in the GNG (or were?) Only two hand pulls 1 for Adnams Light House and 1 for Harveys BB I had a pint of the later which was ok @ £3.20 a pint.

I visited recently on a Friday night and quite enjoyed the place. Anyway..... the bar is larger than it looks from the outside. A good choice of ales, lagers etc and not over priced. The bar staff were attentive and quick to serve with a good clean bar area and a vibrant though not too "young" a crowd. I liked the friendly easy going atmosphere. There is a small smoking area to the rear of the bar. Toilets very clean and in good order. I would def use this venue again and must admit to being surprised that I enjoyed the place when I thought it might be a bit of a spit and sawdust type bar which thankfully it isnt.

Popped in here a couple of weeks ago. Has gone downhill recenlty. Beer selection was poor and its been done up and has lost the atmosphere that made it so different from the nearby bars in TW.

I was shocked to read the comment of 24th Feb 09 - I visited the Rose & Crown on numerous occasions over the past few years and can only comment that this establishment has gone from strength to strength since the Landlord took over in August 07. Easter Sunday this year the landlord held an excellent bar-b-q that was enjoyed by all. I am aware that food is no longer provided and I have been advised this is due to a lack of demand despite excellent reviews and comments, so yes I agree this is a shame but the beer remains of exceptional quality. The regular staff, have always been extremely attentive and I believe 'you reap what you sow'. I would advise that you give the Rose & Crown a try, some regulars have left for pastures new but this pub has successfully moved into the 21st century. This Landlord has manged to improve the facilities (new toilets, decor and smoking garden) without losing the friendly, traditional feel of a good English pub.
|
Sadly a pub to be avoided at the moment- it has really gone downhill and most of the regulars seem to have departed. No food any more and the beer is of indifferent quality. Landlady means well but inexperienced and let down by her staff

I had passed this pub a number of times, but had never gone in as the exterior is for some reason off-putting to me. Never judge a book by its cover! I have been in twice this week at lunchtime and was surprised to find within that exterior a pleasant, light and airy pub. The landlady was welcoming and pleasant on both occasions. The HSB as a guest was in tremendous condition, so much so I had to have another! Today we ordered a tuna mayo sandwich, a mature cheddar ploughmans, a pint of Harveys Best (alas the HSB had finished) and a half Kronenbourg, all for 10.90. The previous day we had been charged 10 for two sandwiches in a Tunbridge Wells cafe! The food was a little slow but the landlady apologised and said there was a problem in the kitchen. She then offered us a free drink in compensation for waiting so patiently, which we graciously accepted. The food arrived and we could not believe the value for money, both were excellent and plentiful. Our drinks and meal were enjoyed and all well within the allotted hour, hardly slow service at all. This pub deserves to be so much busier than it is, an old fashioned boozer of character. It seems to be well supported by its core of regulars and deservedly so. Ah! I nearly forgot, the Harveys was excellent too. The third beer was GK IPA, which I haven't tried as it is far from my first choice.

This pub has recently been given a makeover - hideous Regency Stripe wallpaper removed without, happily, destroying its local boozer atmosphere.
Have Harvey's Best and a guest ale. Menu looks promising but have yet to try it.
Two fires burning in here all winter - a rare treat in TW these days.
Bar billiards still there.

Popped in here whilst in TW for a wedding last weekend - found it to be a nice, hospitable boozer. Very much a local's pub, but one where strangers are welcome. The girl behind the bar told me they'd suffered trade-wise following the smoking ban - so let's hope that traditional pubs such as this don't keep disappearing. Will be back the next time I'm down.

Over the years I've been in the habit of dropping in here if I happened to be in T. Wells around lunchtime, and in the mood for a bite and a pint. I must say I'm quite amazed at some of the foregoing comments. I've never felt in the least unwelcome or intimidated , either by the staff or the locals. The beer's always been excellent, and as far as I can recall, quite varied as to what was on offer. And they do a mean toastie at bargain prices. Don't be put off; this is a real pub - give it a crack.

My maiden visit took place recently, primarily on the strength of its entry in the '07 Good Beer Guide. Whilst I would not give this place such a damning report as some previous visitors have seen fit to do, I must confess to having been somewhat disappointed. Personally I don't mind a pub favouring older clientele, being local-orientated or perhaps slighly rough 'n' ready. Indeed, it is clearly a traditional style boozer that is surely meant to appeal to those who prefer that environment. And to be fair, the few punters present were actually surprisingly mixed in terms of age (albeit they all looked to be "characters"!), both they and the barman were friendly enough and the place was in reasonable nick, if a little tacky in interior decor terms. However, unless I was particularly unfortunate, there was little sign of an interesting ale selection, which when one visits a pub with this specific expectation in mind is a little deflating. Okay, the Greene King IPA was actually well kept, but that was the only choice and any self-respecting cask ale quaffer would expect much more. Also there only appear to be 3 pumps, so how the Guide could list at least 4 beers is a mystery! Might be okay for a quiet pint if you happen to be a traditionalist who doesn't mind the ale situation being a bit routine. But I won't be struggling to get back there as aside from the promise of varied beers, the place was simply average; unexceptional. A shame really as it has much potential.

Went in with wife felt like aliens from another planet! very strange! perhaps they are planning to take over world and we butted in on conversation!!
Good for a story!

Leave Grubby alone he hasnt harmed you but yeah pretty cr*p as pubs go

typical old fashioned boozer where a tumbleweed roles past if anyone has the audacity to try it for the first time nice to see the refusal to serve drunk people is in place (not).

An excellent pub and certainly not just old men. Good choice of beers, the Young's Bitter was excellent. Nice atmosphere too. I don't know of a better pub in Tunbridge Wells. The Litten Tree (referred to by "anon" is closed, which can only be a very good thing!

Good 'old-man's' pub!
|
great place. Like a historic monument, stunningly old fashioned. Got an old price list up from 1968 and doesn't seem to have changed much. Great beer and a real specialist place.
|
A wonderful place to relax and enjoy the feeling of a true pub. Great locals and fun people to chat to. Landlord & Lady are first class in making you feel welcome. More of these's places please T/Wells

My husband and I are wandering Northumbrians and March 2004 we visited TW. We were at a total loss to find a 'real' pub among the laminate wonders, but then by fluke we found the Rose and Crown. The landlord was very welcoming but not in our faces. We especially liked the characters, just like drinking at home!! Proper beer and proper atmosphere.

great little pub, good food, nice atmosphere. absolutely nothing like the litten tree. which can only be a good thing.

Granted, can get a bit smokey, but that's just what you would expect from a pub like this. Great for those that "like a drink", terrible for those that want to be seen. I loved it, but the three girls I took with me walked off in disgust. I rolled out several hours later. Great publican.

Small locals pub at the top end of town. Good selection of beers that you wouldn't normally see in Kent. Can get a bit smokey at times.
