user reviews of the Old Queens Head, Penn

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Busy on a Wednesday night, predominantly with diners, and the majority of tables laid out for this purpose gave an indication of the primary focus of this establishment. A three drink round seemed pricey at £12+, the ale options of GK IPA or Ruddles County seemed rather pedestrian, and the clement weather spared us what would have seemed an uncomfortable indoor drinking experience.

Cannot comment on the food but on the evening I went the beer and service (young man behind the bar who could pill a pint properly )were terrible and overpriced, The were two traditional beers on offer, Green King and Ruddles Country (£3.80) I left half the pint and went over the road to the Red Lion Give this pub a miss

Disappointing meal there on 31st March. Starter of Shropshire Blue cheese bake was bland with no taste of cheese, main dish of steak and kidney pudding used pigs kidneys rather than lamb reducing the flavour and the cake pudding was again bland and could have been any cake.Service was pleasant but half an hour between main course and pudding uunacceptable

I have eaten at this pub many times over the last 3 years at lunch, evening and Sunday lunchtime. If the carpark is busy, drive on. They are unable to deliver a good service at peak times which is a shame as I have had more pleasant than bad experiences here. I have noticed that in comparison to a year ago, the staff have completely changed and do not deliver the same respect to the customer as the previous bunch.

That aside, the food is very good albeit a little over-priced. The menu offers a fantastic selection to suit anyone's palate and is changed seasonally. The service is not as good as it should be for the prices you are paying. The building is lovely and the log fire in the winter is welcoming. If you want to eat in the restaurant part which is upstairs, book in advance as it is very popular.

Went here last night for a meal...the Real Ale was appalling, so opted for Red Wine. Food above average, but Service, whilst initially very good, descended into chaos, so much so that when we went to pay the Bill, there wasn't either A) A single Waiter/Waitress to be found, and B) No-one behind the Bar that we could give 120 Cash to either! To all extent and purpose, we could have simply just walked out unchallenged!! Note to Manager: Toughen up with your Staff - they seemed to think that they were there just for a doss! Otehrwise OK-ish.

Went here for a christmas meal. the food was fantastic and the service was excellent too (was a bit concerned considering what others had written in their reviews).

Beer was well kept too and those in the group who had wine from the extensive list were very impressed too.

My only criticism is that the food was a little expensive, but that is quite standard for the area in general.

DesparateDan was the lucky one - four of us almost left midway through following the shocking service and only adeqaute food. The Royal Oak and The Swan are so much better than this dump, we wont be revisiting.

We went on Sunday for lunch and had a brilliant time. Managed to bag the big table by the window in the bar area and enjoyed a top knotch roast with mates. It's fun watching a busy pub in full swing.
Food was all class - big cuts, top roasties and sweet veg. Service was all smiles and friendly. I haven't eaten in the restaurant bit before but will probably give that a go having read the menu.
Can't imagine what happened to the people who reviewed this pub below. There's no way this pub can be that bad - certainly not with the numbers enjoying themselves on Sunday.
Can't wait to go again frankly.

We live near the Alford Arms and had high hopes for the OQH but sadly it wasn't to be. The menu reads well but the food did not live up to the descriptions and was not done well. The meat was tough, the veg was overcooked and seasoning seemed missing altogether.

Our dishes seemed to generally have a lot of water in them [gravy, veg, sauces etc] which suggests they'd been sitting around under covers for a while.

The service was good and we had no other qualms but as we went for the food it was a disappointing experience.

Shocking - four of us went for dinner, the beer was off, the food was slow to arrive and a little cold and the landlady was in the worst mood. THe atmosphere was OK but there's a lot of room for improvement on the service side of thing especially at these prices. Very disappointing.

On the positive side, the food is good. Unfortunately, rude management and inept - and painfully slow - service spoiled what should have been a pleasant lunch. If they can replace the manager and train the staff - while holding on to the chef! - they'll have the makings of a good restaurant.

'loveofpubs' first posting, having registered the very same day, seems only to lack exclamation marks to emphasize his/her love affair with this place. Hmmm... new manager perhaps..? Not my experience on 28 Jun, I'm afraid. Although living close by, I'm only an occasional visitor 'cos 'inkberrow's' staff observations are typical, with the additional refinement on Fri of two young members of staff havin' a snog in the alcove with customers awaiting service at the bar. Since Michael left, things just don't seem to be the same. Like 'inkberrow', I've been to the others in the the chain and, on our visit, the Alford Arms wins hands down on staff attitude and service. All that said, presently, this place remains popular.

Wow what a different place. I used to live in Tylers Green and have recently moved back here. Great ambience and some fab food, better than pub grub and you even get some excellent service that you don't get in other pubs. Definately goes to the top of my list. Worth a visit if its for a drink, bar snack or a slap up 3 course upstairs. A real pub with class.

Ive had to wait at a bar before, but not when Im the only person there and the three female members of staff are chatting in front of me. Once would have been bad enough but twice? The attitude from the staff was of polite boredom, yes they did ask if we enjoyed our meals but you felt they didnt greatly care.

The food? Well its the same as the other pubs in this chain, The Swan, Royal Oak and the Alford Arms. The difference was that in this one it was cold. Cold plates, cold food, cold staff.

If you like the look of this pub (and I do) go and eat in one of the others, I have and they are very good. Dont eat here until youve heard that they have replaced the staff.

Had a wonderful meal and drink with friends thought marks were 10/10

Just great to see

The best pub I've been in round here - and there were 2 real ales on handpump when I visited.

Spent a very pleasant Friday night in here, nice ambience, polite staff, nicely done out etc etc. The only thing missing was some proper Real Ale, but it was encouraging to note that they didn't serve Alcopops, thus reducing the chance of an invasion of Chav's.

Just been refurbished. Have yet to try it, might head out now! Was quite nice with good food last time I went and was definatelty more a restuarant than a pub. Lets see how it has changed!
Malc_London - 7 May 2006 12:05
Beers OK, wines are well-chosen, food is expensive, more of a restaurant than a pub, not even a gastropub. Service is willing and capable but the food quality lacks consistency. Not the sort of place you would pop in for a quick drink. Well, I wouldn't.
paddymiguel - 30 Nov 2004 14:34
Nice garden, leather sofas and formal seating. Food perhaps slightly over-priced for a pub but of top quality and good service.

Pip runs a fantastic pub. Great food and lovely leather sofas!
