After leaving the Gardener's Arms in Plantation Road, our next stop in Oxford was the Gardener's Arms in North Parade Avenue. Just 6 minutes walk separates them. So, they're most likely to be the two closest Gardener's Arms in the country! This particular one is a Greene King pub run by a couple of longstanding owners. It genuinely feels like stepping into somebody's house and also a step back in time. The downside was that the ale range was limited. Greene King The Gardener's Arms Finest Ale was supplemented by Belhaven/Saltaire CCC & Thwaite's Wainwright. Not as good as the previous Gardener's Arms.

The ale (Wainwrights now by Marstons I believe) wasn't great but found this to be a genuine pub unlike the R & C across the road.

Great little unspoilt pub with a warm atmosphere, run by a hard working couple. A lovely menu of home-cooked food (no chips in sight - makes a pleasant change!) and well - kept beer. No nonsense, nothing fancy, just a nice little pub :)
I went to the Gardeners Arms with some friends early one Saturday evening. The bar staff (landlord and landlady perhaps) were rude from the off, making disparaging remarks about us, even though we were paying customers. The food wasn't very nice at all and overpriced for what it was.

A good counterpart to the Rose and Crown across the road and its namesake pub, The Gardeners Arms nearby in Jericho. Oxford probably needs more of this - a no nonsense, unspoilt, boozer that's welcoming and solidly working class with its comfortable fawn sofas, Sahara nuts machines and general air of 'we don't care about trendies'.

What a contrast to the Rose and Crown over the road.Very quiet, 70's dcor with a lot of clutter that you would find in your attic. St Austell proper job at 3.60 was expensive.
Everything a pub ought to be - cosy and welcoming. In an era characterised by crass attempts at refurbishment, this is a rare thing. May this place never change. It would be a crime to visit the Rose and Crown and miss out on a pint or two here.
Great cosy pub slightly overshadowed by the magnificent Rose and Crown up the road. I want to live on this street!
Small frontage pub on a cozy narrow street with the Rose and Crown further along. Enjoyed a very nicely kept Brains' Rev James sat in the front of the pub. Personable landlord said good evening on entry.
It has one long room going past the bar on the right halfway down. Traditionally styled, it seems to be broken up into niches/alcoves which are very well lit and there are newspapers around to read with one or two punters sat around doing just that; a nice way to relax after work. The television over the door was on quietly and I would guess this would normally be a quiet place. Hurray.
Nice place to start a pub crawl of Oxford as it is only a short walk in via St Giles.

Pleasant older-style, heavy-curtained pub with friendly bar-folk. Interesting framed photographs on the walls. Piano in the corner. The afternoon was nice and quiet as the sound on the telly was turned down and the games machines were not in use. The pub may be better enjoyed by your older person. Good quality offerings of Aspalls cyder and Tyrrells varieties of crisps. Spotless toilets. Perhaps the two nearby pubs of the same name could differentiate themselves in the use of an apostrophe in Gardeners Arms: it is Oxford, after all!

The Greene King IPA was in good nick in this local - a refuge from the studenty and pretentious establishments of Oxford. Sadly, few people in on a Saturday night but there seemed to be a giant crossword club going on which provided a bit of entertainment!
I can over look this being another GK house for two reasons: firstly, the IPA is very well kept; secondly, the place is indeed like your grandparents' house. A thoroughly charming and unpretentious little back street pub.
Unpretentious, functional and cosy pub. Feels a bit like your grandparent's front room, but in a good way. Attracts an older crowd. This, along with it's unremarkable nature actually serve to make it very pleasant in my view, and a good foil to the other pubs in the area.
An old fashioned back street local. Greene King with a guest. OK. Nothing special.
The Gardeners Arms in Plantation road is the vegetarian place. Very different pub. If you went to a bohemian, woody, student place with young, good looking staff, that was Plantation Road. If you went to a 70s throwback run by an elderly couple with old folks in flat caps sitting with their whippets and doing their knitting, that was this place.

Greene King pub in a relaxed, bohemian part of Oxford, opposite the Rose & Crown. Friendly and comfortable with conversation as the stand out noise. Good but in the end it is Greene King.
Enjoyed a Hardy and Hansons (G.King) and Davenports in this small friendly pub. Lovely cosy feel to the pub and nice decor.
Very nice little pub - small and cosy with interesting things on the wall
Another splendidly traditional pub in North Oxford, a stone throw's away from The Rose and Crown. Rev James was on as a guest beer, not cheap at 2.95, but in fine form.
Nice unspoilt relaxed interior, well kept pints and a friendly dog. Great for a quiet beer although there was a bit of rubbish music on when we first arrived.
Great pub, friendly atmosphere, good garden; only downside is that it is a vegetarian pub (but the the food is nonetheless quite good). Also stock Weston's Organic Cider.
Outstanding little local. Even the landlords name is spot on...D.J Rhymes. Brilliant.

Lovely little pub with a friendly atmosphere and good cask ales. Set in one of Oxford's most picturesque streets, and popular with locals and students alike.
Wonderful little pub. On Sunday was in at about midday, they had nibbles out on the bar and the landlady was very friendly (though surprisingly prim and well turned out!). Had a lovely pint of the guest ale, called Rev James or something, from Brains in Cardiff.
Really traditional, homely little pub in a wonderful area.
Also try Rose and Crown a stone's throw away which is different but also first class.

I think the comments on this page may be for the Gardeners Arms on Plantation road, also in jericho!!! which I have to say is a very nice pub indeed and serves a great range of continental beers and real ales.

Great little pub.

I reckon this is by far the best pub in North Oxford.
The landlord really knows his stuff and the beer is always good.
There's a really nice mixture of age groups - it's neither all students nor all locals. You haven't lived till you've taken in the Sunday night quiz night which is hosted by the funniest quiz master I've ever encountered.

I love this pub, been coming here for years and years. When in here ask for the chicken, cheese, crack pepper and mayonnaise sandwich on toasted white bread. The ultimate in pub grub. Great place
Quiet pub, tucked away from the crowds. Good beer, basic but decent food and friendly landlords makes this a regular favourite.
