user reviews of the Rose and Crown, Mayfair

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

First visit was on a Friday lunchtime and to be honest the place was rather soulless. 3 people having a drink and a group of Italian's ordering lunch who along with the 2 bar staff were the only people in the pub.

Downstairs bar with an upstairs dining room.

3 pumps on the bar that were dispensing 2 ales...Black Sheep Best Bitter & Wells Bombardier....European lagers on offer were Estrella, Beck's Vier, Stella, Kroenberg & Staropramen.

Background music playing, bog standard decoration and that's about it...really not much to report and in my opinion not really worth a visit...pleasant enough but that's it.

Visited this pub yesterday and won't rush back. Three handpumps but only one beer on - Bombadier was lifeless and barely drinkable. There are better pubs in the area

I say long may this survive...there are scarcely any pubs in the immediate vicinity and the Rose and Crown fills a gap pretty adequately. With Spitfire, Pride and Greene King IPA on tap (Sept 28 2009)..it is a decent selection if not the most imaginative.

Went there last Sunday before the SuperBowl XLIII showing at the Hard Rock Cafe. Surprisingly packed for those that were not attending the padded girls chasing pig-skin (sorry to all those offended). That said, whether an international crowd is one that you are looking for is open to each person's preference, but being in the nexus of Piccadilly, Park Lane, Hyde Park Corner & HR Cafe, means that this is somewhat inenvitable.

The staff were pleasant enough and - indeed - the American gentleman that runs it is quite comical, if it is not evident that he does anything of use (might have been his night off). The rest of the staff are enthusiastic enough it a little sloppy, overun and clearing up seems to be something forgotten about at times.

Unlike other pubs that I have reviewed, this place is souless. It does not have the charm and character of others (e.g. Churhchill Arms, even if I didn't like it or the Red Lion off Jermyn Street), which for me means that it could be any other pub in any area of London. That said, it is easy to miss and if small in size , which makes it a little better than others. There's just nothing extraordinary about it!

Beers-wise it is not too bad, but far too generic. Go to if you're in the area and can't be bothered to walk anywhere else

my experience of this pub is positive - a surprisingly good pub considering it's location, where most of the pubs tend to be soulless, I thought the service was very friendly and helpful, they had good beer on draft and a quiz machine.

All in all , a nice surprise.

The staff are so rude in this dingy looking pub. My wife and her two friends ordered and paid for there food, seated themselves up stairs, i arrived 5 mins later as i was looking around in the Hard rock shop, i was standing there for ages the chinesse young bar man kept ignoring me as i was trying to place an order, so i gave up and joined my friends. As the waitress (black girl bradded hair) arrived with the my friends order, I took the opportunity to order (the leasted complicated item on the menu) a bowel of chips she insisted that i give her the 1.99 for the chips first so i gave her 2, my friends did not recieve there drinks along with there food, the chinese guy comes up and starts arguing with my wife saying that she did not order drinks!! (Very un-professional) so we decided to forget about drinks and just eat the food. my friends had finished there food and i still didnt recieve the bowel of chips i ordered!. So when we were leaving as a matter of principle we asked for our 2 back! i asked for the black girl and i was told that she wasnt available! the chinese guy then started to tell me that i did'nt order chips! Then the bar manager (a small mexican lookin guy) looked in the small elevator from the kitchen and produced the "missing" bowel of chips! and handed them over the counter of the bar (what the F**k) but were going home now we said! we asked for our money back as originally requested. He proceeded to take his time and then slapped 1.99 into my wifes hand!

That experience has to be the most rudest we have ever had. We "Crown" this pub the Worst for service and thank god we didnt drink in it.
Future explorers and punters Stay in the Hard Rock Cafe.

I like this place - it's pretty much adjacent to the Hard Rock meaning it gets quite a bit of tourist trade.

Last time I was in late last year I enjoyed an entire evening here and had a decent steak to boot. Probably not somewhere you would travel across London to visit but if you are in the area you can do worse tyhan the Rose and Crown

Nice pub, the black American guy who runs the bar is a real nice fella a real pro, the man takes pride in his work and his pub is a pleasure to visit.

I stumbled across this pub as the wait for the Hard Rock Cafe was too long.

I found this pub to be relaxing, charming and cosy. The staff were very friendly and helpful.

For dinner I had pie and mash and mushy peas which was absolutely delicious with the most amazing gravy I've ever tasted. My boyfriend had a massive burger with egg, bacon etc and homemade chips which was also delicious.

Downstairs they have a good selection of drinks and alcopops etc and also video game touch screen which is good fun.

I would definitely go back to this pub.

AVOID! AVOID! AVOID!

Recently visited this poor excuse for a pub and the staff were so incredibly rude I was left quite shocked. I was reminded several times by the lady behind the bar serving me that it was her day off and she shouldn't even be here today, and as if by my asking for a round was just adding to her misery. To then treat paying customers with such contempt when her issue is with the manager (i'll get onto him!) is just unacceptable.

I think the manager has an issue with "young" people. I'm 29 (probably look closer to 19 - thanks mum and dad!) The pub started to get a little busy and he was bring plates back and forth to various tables. Several times we were "greeted" with a sarcastic "Excuse me", a grunt, then a tut and a condesending shake of his head, as if standing in the middle of a pub chatting was the most ridiculous thing to be doing. When greeting more senior clientelle he was actually quite polite so i'm not what his issue was.

Needless to say we didn't stay for a second pint. Shame the rating on this site doesn't have minus points!!!

Went to this pub on a sunday to watch the football. While the pub seemed nice and the beer was okay, the staff were poor. One person who I assumed to be the manager was incredibly rude to people in our group. There was an issue about standing in the way of staff serving food, but instead of politely asking people to move he was agressive and obnoxious from the start. I have been in many other pubs and never known such a reaction to a common problem. I will not be going back there again, there are plenty of other pubs where they are far more friendly and grateful for business.

Went here on both the 21st and 25th of June before the o2 Wireless Festival in Hyde Park. Pub seemed nice and clean, ok decor, looked like nice food at London City prices - I didnt try, people behind the bar were ok - not overly friendly but not rude either, beer was ok as expected but expect London prices (2.74+ a pint), noticed the single (?) pool table was upstairs as were the toilets. Sky was on a big TV at the end of the bar. It is an ok pub and if I was in the area I might pop back into...

I accidently found this pub while touring London and I'm so pleased I did. It's a fantastic pub with great largers, traditional beers, cooled bottles and a nice menu. I strongly recommend this pub to you. Since finding it 3-4 years ago I have arranged all my office parties there. The organisation of Gerry (manager) and his staff help make the horrible task of arranging the office party easy. Gerry takes care of all the worries: catering, decorations, even invitations.

This Pub is absolutely F.A.B!! great chilled beers, no head at all, and an extremely great choice of food on the Menu, I luv it!

this pub has now changed its image and its menu and you will find a visit very enjoyable.

Out of 26 pubs on the monopoly pub crawl that we did, this was the only one that served us a shit pint (well half, actually).

This pub doesn't have any redeeming features to make it worth a visit despite the shit beer, so it's probably best avoided.
mike - 29 Aug 2002 17:14
Don't bother with the food - expensive and very small portions.
