Not a bad pub at all.
However, why is the profile relating to any comment worth reading in its own right nearly always deleted?
You'd not have thought that the Plymouth Brethren would run a pub site, would you?

The Stormbird was the better of the 2 Camberwell pubs I tried last night. I visited the Hermit's Cave across the road back in 2010. Whilst they are related, they are worlds apart. The Hermits Cave has the better atmosphere. The Stormbird has the better beers. The latter has limited seating. I ended up propping up the bar. Only 3 real ales were on - Five Points Railway Porter, Hawshead Windermere Pale & Siren Liquid Mistress. Ciders were Sandford Orchards Devon Mist & Thistly Cross Whisky Cask. Another key draw is the craft beer selection, which included brews from Beavertown, Magic Rock, Left Hand Brewing, Mikkeler, Moor & Siren. There was also a decent bottle selection. Pub of the day in South East London for me and the Railway Porter was divine!

The Stormbird, as this pub is now called, continues to offer its wide selection of generally well-kept ales.
However, its busy trade seems to have taken its toll on the furnishings, and it is beginning to resemble a students union bar perhaps.
Some investment is needed. It's looking a bit too lived-in these days.
A couple of session-strength beers would also encourage customers to stay longer and have more than just a couple, as sensible folk do with the strong stuff.

One of just a couple of pubs left in South East London to tick from the 2016 GBG so on a Saturday afternoon in mid August I finally made it here.
12.45pm and I was the first punter in closely followed by another. As described in the GBG this is the sister pub to the Hermits Cave across the road but couldn't be any different. Has the feel or more of a cafe bar than a pub, however no food served here just a large selection of ale and craft beer and a very good spirits list to boot.
Large open glass windows on to the main road, inside the floor boards are stripped bear and compliments the long wooden bar and ample wooden tables and chairs / stools.
The walls are adorned with repro craft beer signs, most of them being American and European.
As stated above the beer range is huge, with 12 keg pumps, 6 lager pumps and 6 cask handles. On this visit there were 15 keg ales on, 2 lagers, 3 ciders and 4 cask ales....plus the large bottle range which I counted as being 33+.....now that's some selection!!
I opted to have a keg pint with my choice being Moor Beer Company's Nor Hop @ 4.1%, a decent beer at £4.95 a pint. All prices of pints and bottles are displayed on various chalk boards.
I stopped for one beer but I may return, its not really a pub to me but the ale choice is very good, its varied and different from the choices elsewhere in the area and I don't live too far away.
Scores well.

PS, this is indeed renamed THE STORMBIRD
|
Yes, a wide selection of beers, mainly in the strong to very strong range are what seem to be the draw.
I went for a 3.8% IPA. I don't think that it had been selling too well as it seemed to be turning tart. On previous visits all have been fine however.
It appeared to be perhaps understaffed with just the one serving lady.
7/10

As mentioned in previous reviews, it’s been called the Stormbird for a while now, and is unrecognisable from its previous incarnation.
Very nice little pub, and extremely friendly staff. Almost a student-like atmosphere, but with no students. A large number of the taps were not in use, which was a shame. A little surprised that they seemed to serve almost nothing but different variations of IPA as well; a few other different styles of beer wouldn’t have gone amiss.

Much better since it changed from the Funky Munky. Busy on a Saturday night but has a good selection of ales, also available in thirds. Tried the beer paddle which had thirds of an Australian ale, one from Magic Rock and one from Yorkshire. Local beers are available too but at 6 or 7 percent, they're not session ales. Hackney Red from Brodies was tasty though.

This place has re-opened under a new name. Am not sure what the name is though. Something Bird?
|
Pub now closed. Munky777, why are you so obsessed with how people dress? The only thing that matters is how they behave and whether they are clean. Indeed there were lots of thing wrong with this pub, but people's dress wasn't one of them.

Glasshalfull says it all.

I live in Camberwell and it's got a few decent bars but this certainly isn't one of them ... the music quite frankly is awful seemingly at all times but especially Friday nights, the bar staff uniquely manage to dress scruffier than the already scruffy clientele a mix of quite old fading wannabee artists and students who don't know any better - the perma half drunk manager and his mangy dreadlocked dog bring the place down too - i've been in about five times over the last few years - i seem to be willing to give it a chance but every time i find a reason to not go regularly - i agree with glasshalffull - the beer just never seems to taste quite right, 2nd time i was there a small cockroach jumped on the bar and a drunk regular said they were coming from the kebab shop next door .. nice - i popped in recently as a notice outside said new management, walked in there's the same scruffy posh-lad manager half-pissed at the bar, to picture him imagine a 55 year old surfer from Surrey. Ok once again - last chance i though - i'm ere now,so i tried a beer - still not good, ok try the food - it arrived - palatable enough i suppose but not hot enough and the 'chef' ... dressed in Charity shop jeans and a real single-mum type baggy black top told me what's in it - so yes i've had it with The Funky Munky - awful name anyway - this is an honest account of my experience ...

This place is awful!
Use to be OK once upon a time. Then they moved the bar from the back wall to side wall, why? Have been there for a late night drink when everything other decent place in Camberwell (ie Dark Horse or Hermits has closed).
You have to pay to get in, 4 I think. The music is middle of the road 'Disco' think Grand Master Flash, white lines ... yep them old crowd pleasers which you know any nos of bars in London are playing at any one time.
The people genuinely seem to be having the time of there lives here. Studenty (I use the term demeaningly). At this time of night OK expect a few walking just messes.
The beer (no stella) Kronenberg then, tastes awful (always does). Not sure whether its the pipes or what?
I'm use to bad toilets but these are particularly bad.
Gone to the dogs. Woof!

Good after work, drinking sesh pub. Good music and the friendliest staff and punters in Camberwell.
Only downer is the queue for the bar during happy hour, but think that has a lot to do with the 2 for 1 cocktails, which is fine but just a bit of a downer when you just want a pint...

I love the munky, that funky munky
Good trendyish pub
|
Much improved on a recent visit - food range seems to have improved and beer and wine selection good. Nice to sit outside and watch the camberwell world go by
|
Let itself go a bit recently - Dark Horse or Castle better
|
Nonsense. Youngish crowd but 18/20 more accurate - now that couldn't possibly have something to do with colleges in the area could it?
Ee-aww!
|
Full of 16/17 yr old somethings who think they're all that. Cramped and not v.friendly.

Good music and atmosphere Friday nights

Good pub with nice beer - although I regretted the quantity of Kronebourg Blanc I drank the next day. Toilets leave something to be desired - v smelly

Poor Steve Roper (see below) - one can only assume he's moved out of Camberwell. If they ever do up the Hermit's Cave he'll have to! He's stuffed really, every pub in Dulwich has been ponced up by now.... it's Peckham or bust!!
Good little place this IMO
|
Only been in here a few times but was impressed by the music (the usual disco / soul / funk) but at least it was mixed well which made all the difference. The furniture is a bit odd and uncomfortable (my girlfriend wont go in there because of it) but I have always enjoyed myself.
|
The new layout is nasty when the bar is busy. What's going on with the new uniform policy? All getting a bit too much like "A.N.Other bar with a DJ" these days.
|
Lovely place for a leisurely brunch on a Sunday, very laid back vibe weekday evenings and lively Friday/Sat nights (can get a bit crowded and smoky). Recently 'revamped' and has a much better layout now and loads of new cocktails - loving the cucumber martini! Avoid the house wine it's a bit ropey...
|
Got to be the best pub locally - always end up chatting to loads of likeminded people (mostly Eastern Europeans). Great brunch too.
|
not a pub. It is a badly done up bar. Bright yellow !? Food extends as far as Nachos .Beer as far as Kronenbourg. No ale. Awful DJ's every night of the week. Poor Poor Poor.

Best pub in Camberwell - great music on a friday and saturday night with late drinks if a bit crowded. Bouncers are really friendly. Good varied crowd.

Best pub in Camberwell (which is saying a lot). Food is pricy but late licence is great and the beer is good.

Quite possibly my favourite pub. Good beer, good music, good atmosphere. Staff are very friendly. Wish it was still my local!
