A 'Beefeater' pub specialising in food of course!! I think i tried a Doom Bar, all good.

This was no doubt a wonderful pub once - albeit in 1780. The building is atmospheric and there is a great upstairs room for functions (now criminally under used and without a working bar). One can almost imagine the cries of the stagecoachmen and whinnying of the horses as well as the tankards of frothing beer and enormous sides of beef in the pleasingly rambling interior.

Now, however, it's a Beefeater and has all the fruit machines, nobby's nuts and listlessness you could wish for. Great raw materials sadly wasted by the current owners - almost badly enough for legal charges to be pressed. Nonetheless, worth a visit.

I've visited the Mitre on a number of occaisions for convenience but I recently stopped by for lunch with my girlfriend. I found the food was pretty reasonable for a beefeater, the drinks well well poured and the staff provided an excellent service (the staff could not do enough for my girlfriend and myself).

Well done Mitre. A big thumbs up from me.

I liked this pub, we visited on a Saturday lunchtime when Oxford was rammed. Coffee and cream tea was the order of the day for our party of 8. The pub had a friendly air about it and the staff were a credit to the pub. Give them a pay rise!

Is a Beefeater but we found a quiet corner of the pub to drink in for a few hours and was an enjoyable afternoon

Erm....in my opinion it's a decent pub in a lovely historic building.
You happen to think it's ghastly and smelly (smells of what incidentally ?).
Guess you'll just have to remain baffled as to why people who know the area would choose to drink in here.

Erm... but it's awful as a pub OR a restaurant!

There are so many great pubs in Oxford that it baffles me why people who know the area would ever eat or drink in this place.

I think most of the previous reviews for this place have been from people eating in the restuarant. Let me make it clear, this is a Beefeater. There are two distinct parts to this establishment, the full service restaurant and the pub. The pub is a fairly decent bar. You wouldn't really know you're in a Beefeater. There are two ales on handpump (London Pride and one other) and the usual choice of fizz stuff. Prices are quite good for central Oxford (2.70 ish a pint). They have a bar meals menu and you can eat in the pub area if you wish - far preferable to my mind than sitting in the restaurant and waiting to be served. It's a really old building and has loads of history - it used to be a coaching inn. Forget using it as a restaurant, treat it as a pub.

A God-awful tourist trap.

Ghastly, smelly, rude-service, inedible food, utter rubbish.

Use your legs and walk around Oxford, and you will find a dozen far superior pubs within about five minutes.

Went to the Mitre on Saturday and wont be going again. Nice traditional place wasnt busy which was good. We were seated straight away but no-one came to take a drinks order and we didnt see our waiter for 25 mins despite there being only 2 other tables in our area. Finally he took our food order and still didnt ask if we wanted drinks. When we finally saw him again we asked for drinks but somehow they took 15 mins to arrive, long after the starter! Food however was good although main course was missing onion rings as per the menu, when asked we were told there werent any, no mention of that when food was ordered. Drinks again when ordered took another 10 mins or so despite the bar beong 20 ft from where we were sat. Diabolical service but reasonably good food if a little pricey.

I like this place - great to be able to get a seat, relax with a beer and watch the hustle and bussle of Oxford High Street. Always quick at serving and reasonably priced.

Tourist trap serving boring food. Imagine the place you'd take your granny if you didn't like her.

Soul destroying place but nonetheless I always ended up in here... perhaps because it did big plates of fairly good value food and was bang in the middle of the High. Or more likely because I was totally clueless as a student.

A big place with, if I remember correctly, really good service - but rubbish beers and ultimately its some kind of Harvester or something. Much better places literally a stone's throw away.

Jesswong - this is not posh - quite the reverse.

Apologies if the general quality of beer is good -and the food, which I ignored-. I could not take more than a sip of the pint -whose identity I don't give, since the brewer is not to blame-. But I got the impression that it is better usually, and will test later.

Ben the bartender is hot.

Worth a trip. Posh, but friendly. Great staff, good food and an all-around memorable experience.

A cozy place to be, but it may be a little too posh for those looking for a night drinking on the town. Very reasonable food. Nice bartenders, and good service.

Reasonable pub in the middle of town that is good for a quiet pint or two - a suitable starter pub or afternoon venue. Attached restaurant is worth a trip.

Large, old fashioned building with lots of nooks and crannies. Usually space even at busy times. Quite pricey, though food is quite reasonable. Towards closing time the staff will count down with all the enthusiasm of NASA Launch Control.
