user reviews of Jacaranda, Liverpool

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

The Jacaranda is back up and running. It was quiet yesterday afternoon. But the last time I was here (about 20 years ago), it only tended to get busy in the evening, when it turns into a nightclub-type venue. 2 ales from the Marstons group are sold - Jennings Cumberland Ale & Brakspear Bitter.

Reopening in October I think

Shame!

The owners also operated the Masque live music venue around the corner on Seel Street and that has also closed down.

Apparently they also own Heebee Jeebee's bar on Seel Street and The Peacock bar, also on Seel Street.

How could they run their two decent venues - the Jacaranda and the Masque - into the ground, but their two bars that attract the wrong sort of crowd are still going !?!?

The Liverpool Echo website today reports that this historic bar has closed.

Went in here yesterday to get out of the rain - it looked closed from the outside but was actually open. They completely refusbished the interior by extending the bar at the end by the gents (although the gents are still very cramped!) and have knocked down the wall at the back where you stepped up to get to one of the fruit machines. An extra staircase into the basement has been added (I think it leads to the ladies toilets which used to be on the first floor).

It's gone from being bright and welcoming inside to very dark and dreary and lot of the old Beatles photos and memorabilia has been moved or removed! The wooden benches by the windows have now been upholstered and a long wooden table with benches has been added, along with a leather sofa, so it is now less cramped than it used to be.

Drinks are still cheap but there's something missing that I can't quite put my finger on!

Has this place closed down? I walked past a few months ago and they were decorating the place - now it shows no sign of life!

It's good here - you hand over a 5 note to pay for your pint and get change for a tenner - because the barmaid is too busy yapping away to the other barmaid!

My pint of StelIa here last week was only 2.30. It's best to go here during the week, maybe during the hours 12pm - 4pm; after that it gets very busy and on Friday and Saturday nights they have bouncers, so it's probably best to avoid then. (Pubs and bars with bouncers are expecting trouble!)

Famed music bar near Concert Square- the trendy bar area of the city.
It's a former haunt of the Beatles and you won't be surprised that they let you know it, with pictures of them and other bands almost covering the walls in what is otherwise a bare-boards kind of place- not dolled up too much.
No real ale, but keg Banks Bitter at only 1 almost tastes OK- almost.
Busy during the day which is a rare pleasure these days.
Not one for the beer drinker, but if you like your music bars or the Beatles this place is far less tacky and more unspoilt than the Mathew Street tourist magnets.

i have to remind people that the DRUM KIT behind the bar did NOT BELONG TO RINGO. but infact belonged to my late Uncle NORMAN CHAPMAN, who was reputed to be the BEST DRUMMER the BEATLES ever had, eh was called up for national service just as he was playing a few gigs with the band when they where the SILVER BEATLES

If you're a Beatles fan you'd give this place 11/10. Because of the associated history with this being the venue of their first ever gig it's very much on the tourist trail with all the memorabelia throughout the pub not to mention one of Ringo Starr's drum kits above the bar! I agree with the other comments about having a good atmosphere. It's quite lively in there but at the same feels relaxed too. The drinks are very cheap too especially before 8pm but it's worth going in at anytime of the day IMHO.

Is it worth visiting? Very much so even if it's just for a quick drink so really no visit to Liverpool is complete without sampling this unique pub.

8/10

Love this place. Cheap Stella but no real ale! Can get very busy. Always popular witht tourists who visit for the Beatles connection. Lots of old Beatles photos on the walls. Cellar bar where the Beatles did their first gig is open in the evening.

was back in Liverpool for the night on friday and went with a bunch of mates from all over the country. hadn't been for years, still has a great buzz, jukeboxes still have great selections.
unfortunately they've altered the upstairs toilet, the gents is now incredibly "cosy" and has lost all the quotes that used to be written at the top of the walls. presumably some kinda PC thing that they've got to offer the same number of toilets to both genders, but i was glad that i knew both of the blokes who were in there when i needed the loo.
would still recommend this place to anyone looking for a decent place to have a drink, is especially good for a starting venue as the atmosphere's great.

Always go here when I'm in Liverpool. 2.00 for a pint of Stella - and don't forget the Beatles connection! They played in the cellar bar a few times. Lots of Beatles memorabilia on the walls.

Great atmosphere. Mix of students and decent locals. Friendly and interesting

Brilliant, great music, varied crowd, good prices and worth going any night of the week.

When I am in Liverpool, I pay a daily visit to the Jacaranda for a pint. Just love the place, good athmosphere and very nice people, especially Dot and Bernie.

The Jac is legendary. Afternoon and early evening drinking heaven for students. Three floors really help out with the bar queue - they just need to open the top floor more often!

A great place, dead cheap, loads of characters, wonderful atmosphere. If you don't like the sort of place where strange people will talk nonsense to you, stay away. But if you want a cheap pint, in a "one off" pub, then step right up.

i think the jacaranda is boss. u get bladdered for gud prices n da manager phil is fine 2. go there 4 a laugh

The Jac ROCKS. We're talking real atmosphere, unlike the boozers round the corner on Bold St.

Absolutely fantastic place. Especially downstairs. It's dark, hot and sweaty. Far more atmosphere than any of these crap chain bars could ever command. In particular, the open mic night on a Thursday is brilliant. Decent selection of beers unless you're a real ale beardie, and a big selection of their own shots, some of them are lethal!
gregor - 24 Feb 2004 21:36
Although somewhat ordinary by real ale standards, great atmosphere really lifts this pub in my ratings
