Turl, Oxfordback to pub details please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.
Unremarkable; Brakspear in good nick though.

A building that flatters to deceive in that it would appear certain to yield a smart, stylish town pub that respects its long history, but upon entering it is immediately apparent that none of these assumptions are safe. I had always avoided it, and having given it a chance found that I had been right to do so. Bland, sapped of any character despite the charming exterior, and by-numbers food and beer. Oh, and did I mention the smell of rancid fat? No - well, it smelt of rancid fat. At least on my last visit which admittedly was some months ago now. But I fear from the last commentary that nothing has changed in the interim.
In fairness, the Brakspear was in reasonable nick, but one ale - and a ubiquitous one at that - in okay form is not sufficient to draw me back, especially in a city blessed with numerous above-average outlets for food and drink. A classic case of potential, and that will not alter unless there is a change in ownership.

Popped in for a pint on a walk back to the station. Typical beefeater type interior. One real ale on (Brakspear) but pint served was so cloudy that we turned around and left.
|
Avoid as if there was an Ebola outbreak inside. Bland, deserted and thoroughly dull.
|
Wonderful building. No beer or customers.
|
Nice and generally quiet little place, average pints (price and quality), surly staff, but peak times I can understand a little surliness...try it.

Never really liked this place. So many better pubs in the area.
Be suspicious of reviews that call bar staff "bar tenders".

I couldnt imagine going out in Oxford without starting off the evening at the Turl. It's a great place with a fabulous outdoor patio area to mingle and meet new people. The service was wonderful, the food incredible and the prices reasonable. (Their bathrooms were clean as well. Which is a plus.) I LOVE the Turl.

When I visited Oxford, my friends and I started every night out at the Turl. The bartenders were amazing, and very friendly. The food was great, and so were the memories I made there.

The Turl is strictly speaking a bar, part of the nearby Mitre pub. Usually very quiet, with a pool table and a small elongated bar area, The Turl serves reasonably priced food. Bar staff are occasionally surly like their Mitre counterparts (the minute by minute countdown to chucking out time in The Mitre a case in point), but in general this is a decent pub if you want to go somewhere in Oxford where you can find a seat on a Friday night.
