A trip to Cheshunt for football and after walking past the 3 pubs from the station....none of them looked very inviting I arrived at this 'spoons.
Uncomplmentary reviews had me in no fear of what this pub was like. Well my opinion is that it's not too bad. It's an old fashioned 'spoons that feels like an estate pub with clientele to match! Drinkers at the front of pub where the tele's are located with eaters to the rear. One note on the food...the large hot dogs looked bloody good.
10 hand pumps on the bar, 2 turned around the other 8 had 2x Ruddles, 2x Abbot Ale, 2x Ciders, Brains SA and my choice of which was Long Man Brewery American Pale Ale @ 4.8%. My pint was alright, not brilliantly kept and maybe it was on the way out as after my pint they turned the clip around!
I have been in worse 'spoons, at least this one feels safe. The locals are seem to be honest and just up for a few beers and a chat.
If I ever return to Cheshunt I will visit again.

No improvement at this very poor Wetherspoons. The management seem oblivious to the group who sit near the door every day and who are allowed to swear constantly. The pub itself is rundown and in bad need of some TLC. As for the beers, on a visit on Tuesday most real ale pumps where turned around. It did not seem to matter as most customers were drinking Lager or John Smiths!

A fab breakfast for under 3, you can't complain about that! But the pub is pretty run down and in need of a complete overhaul. It's sticky and smelly. However, the staff are friendly and attentive.

To be honest it is one of the worse Wetherspoons I have actually been to and I have been to some bad ones, however in there I felt more comfortable. If you enjoy a pub crawl then it's right down your alley. Cheap food and cheap tasting alcohol equals the cheap taste and the even cheaper people that go there. The amount of people that surround the place is as uninviting as possible. Passing the smog of smoke I wasn't to impressed, there used to be proper ales. Now three pumps have been devoted to Greene King IPA, served also at poor quality. Being a Bar manager myself I would cut my losses. The presentation is unappealing as the staff's language to the customers. The only reason I see the only upside is the cheaply priced alcohol, and as I mentioned above I won't be returning to the King James very soon unless I came previously intoxicated.
I won't even begin to described the state of the toilets, but I must tell you there are certain "lines" I won't be crossing.

Good deals on drink think they do a jug of cocktail for 5.00 - good way to get drunk. More of a youngesters pub , also serves quite nice food !

wot a place ,youngsters making a nice pub very uninviting, cheap beer cheap taste

A rather poor 'spoons, with lurking smokers at the door and a slightly edgy atmosphere. At least three of the handpumps were devoted to Greene King IPA, with most of the rest being the usual suspects (Abbot, Pedigree, etc.). Fortunately, there was one down the far end with Loddon Bamboozle (4.8% pale ale) which was a decent enough pint before I headed for the exit.

What has the 99p Greene King IPA done to this place. Gone are the collection of 5 or 6 ales. Last night the only real ale was pedegree at 99p (two other ales with clips showing) were not on and a bottled Leffe (also advertised) was not available. Could this be the reason for the poor turn out in the pub

I always start off in this pub when i'm planning on a fun night out. It has a fun atmosphere, and is the cheapest pub around. With plenty of seats and standing room, booths and a restaurant area. The toilets are always clean and the bar staff very polite.I have nothing to fault this pub on in all honesty. I have never whitnessed any trouble here which is surprising as i have in nearly all the other pubs in the area at some point, yet this is the pub i drink in most. I have met some wonderful people in this pub!And hopefully will carry on doing so!

Wetherspoons barn type pub but one of the better ones. Beer always well kept and usually one or two Dark Beers (Last week Old Peulier and O' Hanlons Port Stout). A mild is listed for this week. Never seen any trouble (as mentioned in a previous report) but then my usual time is between 5 and 7 weekdays. Shame about the Harold Dark, bring it back please Tim.

The King James has changed considerably in the last couple of years mainly due to the bad reputation it had created (I won't deny some of the previous reviews).
Nowadays, the pub is far more welcoming, expecially following a fair amount of investment into the place - there are several flatscreen television on show, plenty of tables for sitting down (there are smoking and non-smoking areas) and there is a constant presence of bouncers to ensure troublemakers are quickly identified and removed.
The council has also recently installed CCTV operator controlled cameras around the area, which has culminated in trouble being cut dramatically (but it obviously still occurs.)
Prices are good, and the quality is above average. The bar staff are friendly and very prompt.
All in all, it's now probably the best pub in the area, but that perhaps isn't saying much... but I do vist on a regular basis.

Visited this pub in August 2006.while staying at the excellent Youth Hostel which is situated nearby in the wonderful Lee Valley Country Park.Once again I was made to feel uncomfortable by the antics of some of the customers including smoking in family dining area.a fight breaking out.All this on a Tuesday evening at 7PM .Whats it like when things really warm up.Thankfully I wont be there to witness it

There has been reports in the local press about fights outside the pub, but I've not been in there recently to say if the pub itself is to blame.

i have been going to the james for some time now and i think the food is great and so are all the people all the other pubs in cheshunt are youth clubs full of wannabe gansters where they look about 10 in the james none of that is happening i think that it is great especially when you go in there before you are going out for the night to get hold of the cheap drink we love it i would never degrade it!!!!!!!!!!

i like the pub you walk in there and u always c someone u know

Full of grumpy old men and scally kids, if you like 16 year olds and a scary atmosphere, head to the King james!

Good value and quality on both food and drink. A large Wetherspoons pub with traditional pub decor and booths to the right for quiet chats. Dining area to rear, toilets are miles upstairs but immaculate. The staff are friendly and work hard. Just remember your table number if ordering food, as they want that first! An open view of Cheshunt shoppers to the front let's you have the opportunity to daydream and reflect on life. The hardcore of pensioners love a good whinge and although can be territorial, they will gladly accept your company. Just don't get them going about the War!

it's not a bad place to be if you like going down the pub and not listening to music or watching footie on the telly. other than that i think it is a boring pub.

King james is the best pub in cheshunt!

This is a great place to go. The food is good and the drinks are cheap. I know what Lana, Stacey and Mark are on about regarding the delightful entertainment of Stacey.

Very nice atmosphere with lots of friendly staff. You can entertain yourself particularly on a Friday night when a regular named Stacey IS VERY POPULAR ENTERTAINMENT.
