please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

I'm sure this imposing and attractive pub used to be owned by Hall & Woodhouse but now advertises itself as a Freehouse. Five ales were on offer: London Pride (yawn), 2 from Green King (yawn), I from Wadworth (yawn) and Navigation Britannia which was my choice and turned out to be another boring 'best bitter' This does seem to be very common - a choice of several beers which are all the same. Suggest they contact their nearest brewery (Sunny Republic) and get something a bit more interesting.
Didn't try the food but it looked good so may return for something to eat and hope for a more interesting range of beers.

Friendly staff and absolutely fantastic lamb steak.

Popped in for a few beers and food last week. Friendly staff, good Badgers beer, and decent food (ie consistent with other pub food, but nothing exceptional). Would happily recommend for an evening out in Wool.

We would like to thank all the staff at The Black Bear. We were down doing the Dorset Arts and Craft Show in Bovington and we came across this lovely pub after a bad experience at a pub before had. Lovely food and good service. Will be going back next year when we are back for the show. Thanks

Best pub for miles! Improved out of all recognition by the current manager. We work locally and always try to get there for lunch at least once a week. It only got a 9 because they charge for the beer still. :)

Well-kept ale, nice selection of food, friendly athmosphere, a good place for a nice chat with the friendly locals and staff.
Well worth a lengthy visit or two - sadly we were pressed for time due to a departing train, but next time we'll stay a long, lazy afternoon for cream tea, continuing into the evening and dinner.
Pub's a good ambassador for the village as well - I wouldn't mind staying a week at the B&B just across the street, actually...

It is nice to read how a pub has turned round. I look forward to trying it again.

Since we got our new landlady in July, This pub has really changed, Great food, very friendly staff
macca20 - 26 Aug 2008 14:02
Since our new landlady took over in March this year the pub has improved no end.The food is very good (I have eaten there many times) the service is excellent, and the landlady is friendly most of the time.I would reccommend this pub to anyone visiting the area. There is also an added benefit for anyone who knows their art. There are 4 suberb oil paintings on the wall by THE David Patten going for a song.A
good investment, but not reconised by the locals.
I would reccommend anyone to visit this pub

Just a shame june dont have a pool table or a darts board as that would be a good way of making plenty of money if she had eaither one of these or both

Me and my friends popped in to this pub last week and met June the tenant who was lovely and friendly.

Food was great too, I'd definitely recommend this pub if you're in the area.

The Black Bear is now non-smoking throughout and has been turned around by the new tenant.

The food served is great, good pub food, and it's all sourced locally.

Simply a great local pub.

Oh Dear! It's like stepping back in time 10 years. If you don't smoke, don't bother. Ashtrays like sea anenomes on the bar. The 6 people in there chain-smoking away. What ARE they going to do next year?!
I gather there will be new management soon. In the meantime, go to The Ship.
This as of October 2006

I been in this pub a few times now and the same people always in there as with any local a bit clicky even with landlord and landlady my boyfriend tried to make conversation but with no success -- we stick with The Ship - - much friendlier atmosphere

Good food - but very very warm when we went (it was August). Friendly staff - and any pub with a full sized bear outside it gets my vote!
golden_wonder - 22 Apr 2005 15:45
a great, friendly pub, kept by mine hosts Ray and Jill. No food, no mobile phones, kids allowed in garden but not in pub. If you enjoy a local where peole regularly take the mick out of each other, you'll love it.
