user reviews of the Crown, South Moreton

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Went there a couple of weeks ago on a Monday evening. The food menu is unexpectedly long. Can they really provide good quality for so many dishes? We had the mixed grill and the lamb shank. Both were good, although my mixed grill was missing its fried egg.

Sadly, not an easy place to work as there is no WiFi.

Not a bad option to the east of Didcot and cheaper and less pretentious than its rivals the Bear at Home and the Red Lion in neighbouring villages. A whopping great goose eggs, ham and chips was home made and went down well with my dining partner while Wadworth's beers are on tap. Family run with a gigantic pooch guarding the threshold, this is the kind of pub Milton's Admiral Benbow could be.

Dear "Mike & the team" thank you for all your personal assurances, which I see are meaningless. CLOSED AGAIN !
pubtrawler - 25 May 2012 10:05
Dear pubtrawler,

We sincerely apologize that you found us closed on Tuesday lunchtime. Unfortunately, certain circumstances had arisen which meant that we were unable to open as per normal. We did re-open that night and are open throughout the rest of this week - serving great food and real ales.

I personally would like to add that this will not be turning into a regular thing.

Regards,

Mike and the team @ The Crown Inn.

Good afternoon to everyone,

We have indeed recently re-opened The Crown Inn within the past month. My team and I all hail from the Home Sweet Home, based in Roke. We have come in with the same attitude of encouraging a warm, relaxing and comfortable place to spend your evenings whether you would like to join us for a meal or just have a few drinks with friends.

We are serving good quality, traditional food and lunch time and in the evening. On sundays, we have our beef, pork and lamb roasts along with other options, including vegetarian options and a child menu.

We are also serving good quality Wadworth cask ales and have a good selection of wines - which is slowly increasing in size.

Finally @tester - thank you you for the positive comments. They are much appreciated. We are also intending to be here for the long haul.

We hope to see you all very soon.

Mike

I've heard of new a new landlord at the much troubled Crown so we dropped in for a nose.
Young man greeted us with a very nice manner, seemed nice too.
Wadworth beer was not bad nor was the food but, more than that another pub rises from the ashes, may be they should all be called The Phoenix.
Keep going for the sake of our country pubs.

I think it did re-open briefly, but it's shut again now- very sad

Closed yet again ????

This place has gone througha troubled period which can be wholy attributed to the brewery.

Has been under new management since Jan 2011 so you I gues you should ignore any reviews prior to then.

We dont't visit very often, but have been quite dissappointed the last couple of times (2009/2010).

But we saw on the web that new management is in now in place. It is fair to say that they are still suffering from the harm previously done by the brewery. As such, it is quiet and seems a little lacking in atmosphere (but this was very early Saturday evening).

However, the quality of the food has made a monumental leap in quality when compared with 12 months ago.

If you are in the Didcot area and want to get away from the "town pub" then a trip out to Morton is well worth it..

Never seems to be open- anyone know what's happening ?
pubtrawler - 25 Jan 2011 10:49
Looks nice enough, but it's hardly ever open, so I guess it's struggling ?

Not been to the Crown for a few years as we were aware of changes in ownership, and apparently that pub had gone downhill. Dropped in on a sunny Saturday afternoon to see for ourselves, and found that apart from a couple in the beer garden, we were the only customers. What a shame.

This pub used to be very busy at weekends. There was no food - unable to get a Chef apparently. The guy behind the bar was the sole member of staff. The pub is currently being run by a holding company, having had 4 landlords in the last year. He's trying to build up the trade, before yet another landlord tries his chances. Beer (6X) was good, but with slow trade it's clearly at risk.

I wish Wadsworths all the best in restoring this pub to it's former glory, it's in a great location, and if they get the food back on they have a chance. If they can do this pretty quickly, and take advantage of the Summer, there may be a chance for the Crown, if not, then I fear it will go the same way as many others.

Fingers crossed.

An absolutely horrendous experience. Family visit two years ago was lovely, expected same from new management. Booked a table prior to arriving, told to "sit anywhere"

Female came to table to identify items not available but wouldnt take our orders. Another couple walked out saying food was late, cold and wrong (we should have left at this point but persevered) Food started to arrive from 40 mins from ordering. One fish and chips (passable) one burger & chips (raw and cold in middle returned for a replacement) three pizzas (I use the term very loosely basically bread dough with cheese and some extra items in it. Replacement burger was also stone cold and raw. Ended up scavenging left over cheese pizza as was starving by now

Bar staff/owner? Not especially horrified at problems offered coffee/wine for delay (this was before the mad cow burger effort came out)

Go here at your own risk and dont for heaven sake have the burger

Used it alot when i lived in the area in the 70s.Then it had two bars, and you could get decent beer and food at a reasonable price. Yet another village pub that has been destroyed by becoming upmarket and something that it isnt.
Another one that has lost its soul. Sad.
trebor1 - 5 Feb 2010 16:05
This is being run by a holding company as the landlord left recently. Beer prices are okay and the food is okay but perhapd a bit expensive for what you get.

Had 6X last time I was there and unfortunately it had gone over. Apart from that the beer is generally good.
Beer_Lover_90 - 30 Nov 2009 17:15
Unfortunately it's up for sale again. anyone got 37K to spare ?
pubtrawler - 3 Apr 2009 09:49
Wadworth 6x and Henry's IPA in good condition, the guest (Horizon Cyclops) wasn't on.

Rural village pub, dark floorboards and beams, tasteful rural bric-a-brac and local pictures, bar billiards, large brick fireplace, piped music. One large compartmentalised room around a wooden bar.

Seems to have a big angle on food, with most patrons being diners. Layout geared towards this with wooden tables and chairs.

Eat regularly here and I don't really know why - it seems to have always been a family favourite. The food at present is very indifferent with one meal being half-decent and the following being a huge let-down.
The worst offenders are the frankly appauling chips which seem to often be undercooked (oil not hot enough?) and some of the cuts of meat used which are often gristly or overly fatty. I also think the hamburger - whilst looking impressive as it is stacked up and held together by a skewer - is far too greasy and not worth the 9 or so asking price. Tge mash often seems to be lumpy as well.

Its a real shame as we've been coming as a family for many years and whilst my other dining companions seem to see these shortcomings as "one-offs" (that keep happening!), I don't really think its good enough. The pub itself is excellent with decent ales, friendly staff and a very popular pub quiz which we have taken part in several times, but it is being sorely let down by sub-standard food charged at a premium rate.
willyfog - 13 May 2008 11:34
I cant speak for the beer as I had a bottle of Newcastle Brown. The food was poor, presented in the pyramidical style beloved of TV but tasteless vegetables and a lamb shank which could have been turkey. Whoever cooks seem s to think volume is the thing. I wasnt to happy to see the "cheff" rummaging around in the waste bin. The shame is the place has lots of potential but they dont realise you must be on top line with food."thats good enough" is not good enough!!
