The Lower George was the only place with no real ale that we tried in Gloucestershire yesterday. There were a number of handpulls. But all of the clips were turned round. There was no real cider either. But the interior of this pub is lovely and traditional, with a few elderly locals enjoying the excellent hospitality. It was the landlady's birthday and she had a karaoke in the room at the rear. There were a few characters in here. Decent place. But a shame there were no ales.

Solid citizen of a pub that has a classical dark interior, a good range of high quality beers and won't break the bank. One quibble might be that on a late Friday afternoon/early evening when I visited some good background music aside it was a little flat in terms of atmosphere, but maybe it gets going later? Definitely worth a visit for at least one or two pints for the real ale lovers among you though.

Since the last review this pub has reopened under new management as the Lower George (although the former name also appears). From our own experience of an early Saturday evening in late January 2014, we can safely say that this watering hole is maintaining a reputation for serving a range of real ales at quite sensible prices, with friendly service and a friendly atmosphere. The only downside for us was that they were clearly getting ready for a local band to put on a gig, with the result that music played through the speakers was a bit intrusive, even in the front bar. Needs more visits and reviews.

The Pig Inn The City has now gone bust (I'm guessing) - all shuttered up. So don't plan it into your itinerary!

Bit of a strange one.... Wide choice of ales and when we went about 4 real ciders on too, it seems to do well with local Camra lot. There are just some pissed up wrong uns in there. How many 60 year olds do you see wearing tags? We saw two! But if you can ignore them the beer is good!

A friendy local pub voted camra city pub of the year.2009/2010, real ales and great food. pool table, live music most weekends and widescreen tv showing sports. What I remember as a real pub! But If you love fizzy beer, microwave pub grub and can't be arsed to socialise with anyone then theres plenty of other places to go in Gloucester.

Hmm, interesting reviews below! Visited via Good Beer Guide recommendation and was surprised that the pub was as shabby as it was (having only sampled The Cross Keys...are all Goucester pubs like this??? only joking). The beer was OK, in reasonably nick. The food menu was worryingly vast (no proper "chef" would possibly offer the pages of stuff available without hefty microwave use). Having said that the bacon roll I had was possibly the finest I have ever eaten and my partner's pork and stuffing roll, similarly fine.
On a Saturday lunchtime the pub had a slightly weird atmosphere and I doubt I'd make a point of returning if in Gloucester again.

I've read some tripe in my time but "localpublichousegal" takes the biscuit with THAT load of guff, she must be the landlady. I hadn't been to Glos for a few years but I was visiting a couple of weeks ago so I thought I'd pop in for lunch. Different people running the place now ( I remember the previous landlord was one HELL of a pool player ! ) and the new lot remind me of the Munsters only Herman is a lot shorter with a bald head and a brummy accent. I ordered lunch with no-one else in the place and still had to wait 45 minutes for the microwave to heat up my food. It was delivered to the table by some middle aged bint, so pissed up and stinking of cheap brandy ( at 3pm !! ) that she nearly dropped it in my lap ! I went back for the evening 'session' and had to elbow myself past a load of little yobbos admiring each others mopeds and zits before I managed to get served the worst pint of Stella I've ever had in my life. They had a band on but after a few minutes blood starting to leak from my ears, such was the volume and mediocrity of the 'music'. This pub won an award? That's bloody amazing and is only an indictment of the rest of Gloucester. This crappy little dive wouldn't sell one pint in my home town.

Id finally like to add that the place has won BEST PUB for a few years in a row now...... speaks for itself x

A bit of a rough & ready establishment. Has front bar and a few alcoves along the side running to a pool room behind. The beer was okay (Severn Vale's Vale Bitter) and they have a lot of varying pump clips but I wouldn't add to the accoloades locals bestow on it as a great real ale pub. Beer was drinkable but nothing exceptional, ambience was a bit rougharse end of town (not somewhere to take the missus - unless your missus is Tracey Emin) and I'd just say it was your average town pub with a few beers on.

Liked this pub. Good quality local real ale. Currently my favourite in Gloucester.
|
I haven't been in this boozer for a while and its changed hands apparently. Beer warm and flat, 'food' straight out of TV dinner hell. Little fat barman has had a charisma bypass. A pub to avoid.
|
Late review from November. The beer was not at its best, and a cloudy foul tasting one was changed when I requested, but others not on top form. Enjoyed the banter with the locals in there though.
|
I have been in here before and had a good pint of Hobgoblin. Today was an exceptionally hot day and I found the Hob flat and warm. Come on Pig, you're a good pub - don't let the weather get you down!

Brill Pub, Lovin The karyoake nights hehe propa fun. :) ..x
|
A very tatty bar haunted by goths and bikers. Formerly a night where 15 year olds went to drink whilst watching some terrible band. Couple of beers on tap, A Wadworth and the Goth favourite 'Hobgoblin.'
|
beer just about drinkable but clean glasses would be better. food just about inedible and bad value. people just about coherent. too many thugs for my liking. good place to go to if your not particular. the anonymous post must be from someone who works there.

wow !1 best pub around this pub is the best pub iv ever been 2 since new owners had taken over this its become a great deal. its changed .. for the better. as a customer i feel this pub has come along way .. since the new owners has owned it : food tastes delicious best around, alot of food for the money, quick service, friendly service. This pub used to be a borin place where people drink but to me know its came to life! There was one time where the last owner kicked all the men out HOW BIZARE !!! its mainly men in there and most men was with there wife or friends or girlfriend and to me my husband getting kicked out over his genre was over the mark so i left with him which is what most people did which made the pub become empty! everytime i step in the pub i can tell its changed to for greatest and most people will agree with me. even in the atmosphere its just great xxxx

WHAT has happened to this place !!!!
I was last here in summer last year and the place was buzzing ! GREAT beer, GREAT people and FRIENDLY barstaff. ALL that has gone now and its gone downhill right to the bottom. it's fully of football chanting Wetherspoons rejects and is UNPLEASANT. As a biker i felt REALLY unwelcome. Barman was totally ignorant and the stella was sour but he wouldnt change it. Said that it tasted ok to him and handed it back after dribbling in my glass ! I had lunch and sent it back 'cos it wasn't even warm. maybe the microwave broke down ? This is one pub that sadly i only have happy memories of how it used to be. AVOID

Everytime I roll into this pub I have a fantastic time. It has a bad (undeserved) reputation due to people judging on the looks of the clientel and the decor. The bikers, goths, punks and other characters are some of the nicest people you will ever meet, and the bar staff are really friendly. (by the way guys Geordie isn't there anymore - try Cafe Renee) Congratulations on a Cracking pub Eddie! And if any of you are in the area and want a spit'n'sawdust kinda pub with real people - try here!

Went to this pub at about 7pm one Friday evening. The locals in other pubs told us not to go in there because it is the roughest pub in Gloucester. Personally, the locals were very friendly and welcomed three drunk lads. A tatty looking pub, but that doesn't matter.
|
This is a basic back street type of boozer with a special and welcome twist. It hosts live music three nights a week (Friday - young Metal & Punk bands, Saturday - blues and rock bands, Sunday - accoustic bands). It boasts the best juke box in Gloucester if you like rock music). Has two real ales, well kept. rest of the range basic but everyone can get a drink! Hosts Gloucestershire's only dedicated Goth night. Friendly, approachable - don't expect trendies and posers - expect bikers, rockers and real people. This is a real pub - Camra probably hate it!
|
This is an excellant live music venue. Eddie has worked hard to achieve a good atmosphere and a safe enviroment for all people. Also an excellant bikers pub. Watch out for Jordie and his hats, he will have you in hysterics. Another thing to look out for is the characters in this pub, I won't name names but there are a fair few.
