This place has undergone a major refit and now trades under the name of "The Alchemist" although it is still owned by the same company.
The refit has done away with the TV screens and pool tables. The emphasis now appears to be on food: the menu is nothing special but reasonably priced (for the area). I have not sampled the quality.
Lots of different cold, fizzy lagers on tap. Also 4 handpumps for proper beer. On my visit they were serving Bombardier, Youngs Bitter, London Pride and Hobgoblin. I had the last one (at 3.10 for a pint) and it was in pretty good condition.

Cavernous bar, useless staff and an awful pint. I dont care how cheap this are, some are still a rip-off and this is one of them.

Large sports bar on The Houndsditch off Bishopsgate. Several plazma screens including a 3-D one and a big pull down screen which is used for the major sporting occassions, and a couple of pool tables on the far side for those not interested in the screens. Gets very busy when a key evening game is on, but is an excellent location to watch a footy game with fellow supporters. And when your team wins to get into the Champions League 4th spot you almost forget about the sticky floors, crap gassy beer and 20 minutes fighting in the scrum up the bar to get served.

i had my christmas party at the barracuda bar this year i am very surprised with the comments below as the food was outstanding. later on in the evening there was live entertainment which made the night.
|
DO NOT, I REPEAT DO NOT go to this place for your Christmas lunch. Yorkshire pudding with Turkey and unpeeled 3/4" thick slices of carrot. The other guys in the party must have been very brave or really p!ssed to have eaten theirs. I was too concerned about self preservation to risk it !!!

Only good if you're into sport - otherwise firmly to be avoided.

Although we only go out on a Friday nite after work in the City, The Baracuda has to be the best. They have a DJ called DJ Mikey Ridgley in there almost every other friday, and he plays all the old cheese music from the late 70's to the present day. He has to be the best friday night DJ they have ever had. We have visited the Baracuda several times when his been there and stayed a lot longer than we intended too. Well done the Team at Baracuda for such a cool night with a top bloke!!

Excellent place to watch sporting events! The atmosphere for every Liverpool Champions League game we've been to this season has been close to The Kop itself!
Table service is welcome when the bar is busy and serves a very decent Boerie Roll! All they need is draught Windhoek and it'd be perfect!

This place is FANTASTIC.......I have just turned 120 years old, and this place still rocks!!
|
The only reason to come in here is to watch the footy as it has the biggest screen in the City that I know of. Unusually it also has enough bar staff on when matches are being played
Other than that it is a vast soulless cavern that hasn't got any better despite regular name changes. Beardy ale drinkers won't find much joy in here and there are many better places to go nearby

Although I am certainly not a big fan of huge branded Pubs......there is something endearing about this monster in the city. I watched the Champions league final there in May and because it was fun I returned for a few World Cup matches....one with 500 Brazilians...the other the fateful England v Portugal match. Service at the bar was really snappy and good and there were even pretty girls running the floor with trays of drinks. Down side was it was bloody hot in there. I've since been back a few times and although I work a good mile away...Id say this is different but good alternative to some of the stuffy, trendy Pubs who have nothing going for them in the City. Food ,although simple, is good and served quickly with a smile and choice of beers is varied, Brahma, Castle, VB, Peroni. 23 TV screens....overall a damn good place just avoid the hot weather!

I do like this place. Excellent range of Southern Hemisphere bottled lagers, service with a smile, and nearly always a decent crowd. The biggest compliment I can pay this place is that it handles big crowds very well. None of this waiting around for 10 minutes to get served lark. And the Tequila girl on Friday evenings.....Now that is a right TOUCH !

Fab pub for all occasions. Karoake every Thursday night which is loads of fun. The best place to watch football in the city.

After a hard days work with modems, circuit board re-fig and playing with my hard drive, The Barracuda is a lovely place to unwind. My friend Rupert suggested it to me. If there's anybody who knows Pubs in London it's Rupert and when he told me about this palce I couldn't wait to come down here and taste the fine Ales (great pint of pride) and wines (simply irresistable spritzers) they have on offer. We often have a fun game of pool, (i always seem to lose) and have a little dabble with the fruit machines. It's so homely. I can only agree with Mr Dirk Hudson and congratulate The Barracuda on a magnificent Boerewors Roll, simply divine!
If I had one wish, then it would be for all the pubs in London to take a leaf out of the The Barracuda's book. hats off to you

Brilliant Bar with excellent atmosphere! The bar staff are all really friendly and the Manager Nick goes out of his way to make you comfortable. The food was excellent and all drinks and food were typical Zone 1 prices. The decore, atmosphere along with good food and drinks created the perfect afternoon turned into night! Highly recommended!

The Boerewors Roll (Sausage sandwich) Is a great little addition to a few pints. Mrs Balls chutney tops it off

This place has always been a hole throughout it's many guises, (Eastern Monk, Springbok etc.). I have just been there out of politeness to someone's work leaving do. Only stayed for 1 pint of the coldest London Pride I have ever tasted. It appears this pub's entry requirements stipulate that girls must sport a tattoo and the only language accepted from all patrons is Estuary English.

I went here last night with some friends just for a few drinks. I was really impressed. It wasn't cheap but not too expensive and had a really nice atmosphere. It was spacious and no attitude. Comfy booths and chairs and tables well spread out and you can see huges tvs playing sport from anywhere in the pub. Interesting decor and nice and clean. Lots of pool tables, again well spaced apart. I will go back again and again.

I went there for lunch today and myself and my friend both ordered burger's (her's with cheese, mine without). We waited 35 mins before asking where it had got to and was informed that it would be with us within the next two minutes. A further 10 minutes later, they arrived - both with cheese. There was no appology offered and I now have indigestion because I had to rush my lunch down as I had to get back to work! The food was very tasty though and the side salad lovely and fresh - a certain change form the usual pub side salad. Maybe it'll be different next time, at a different time of day.

Went here for the England vs Croatia game and it was blinding, great lagers, nice big bar and not a problem to get served even when it was absolutely packed to the rafters! Great atmosphere and friendly banter and chanting with a group of scots who'd come down to support the Croats!
More importantly.... 4-2!!!! Get in and lets hope for more of the same against Portugal!!

Agree with Werner. My girlfriend had her wallet stolen in there and the bar staff didn't want to know. Asked us to come back later. I said I won't be coming back at all. 0/10

Turned up midweek lunchtime and all the real ales were off and we were told they had no intention of putting them on. Big screen TV's are a plus for sporting events and the place seems popular with the girlies for lunchtime tucker and gossip sessions.
|
Great. Pitched up here last week at 20.30 and everyone was utterly shitfaced but no aggro at all. Loads of space, not too loud, just everyone getting right on it. Recommended.

Great atmosphere and good food. A good venue all round!

Awful - When it was the Monk, it was damp, dingy, sticky, just like a real boozer! Now, with the addtion of some 'wacky' South African sporting memorabilia, it's just another theme pub. Avoid!

Large pub with good atmosphere and loads of TV screens for sporting events. Bar prices at the top end, even for the City.

This pub is now called The Springbok
