user reviews of the Arab Boy, Putney

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Claims to be the oldest pub in Putney but the inside is most definitely not old and does make it feel a bit soulless. However, the seats are very comfortable and they had a very nice guest ale on. The background music was just that so you could have a conversation with the person next to you without having to shout. Not far from Putney high street either but did not have any of the rough element that seems to frequent near the station. Overall, a nice experience.

8.00 for a small glass of Rioja. That was enough to piut me off. Much better pubs in the area.

This is my new local.
Having moved to the area 6 months ago I have frequented this pub quite a few times and on all occasions have had an enjoyable experience.
Staff are friendly and seem to get on well with the regulars.
Ales available are IPA and Abbott plus the barman told me that they quite often have a guest ale and at the moment it's The Royal London.
I agree with the below review and also recommend the Lamb Burger which comes with the best chips Ive ever had. We started with Devilled White Bait which was equally as delicious.

I highly recommend this pub for good value for money.

My local .. and not a bad little pub.

Good allrounder without being spectacular.

Staff are fine, clientel are inoffensive, beer selection ok, and as a previous poster stated: has a unobtrusive flatscreen that shows all the sport but is just far enough away from Putney High Street to avoid the chavs that populate The Fox.

The best feature is actually the food. Fairly basic such as fish and chips, etc.. but absolute quality and well priced. I would highly recommend the lamb burger, the best I've had.

Everything you want in a local, but not so good that it attracts the hordes.

Went here a few weeks ago. Very nice bar staff and decent pints. Food was excellent and really tasty. Not too many people in there which is a pity as it could help the atmosphere of the place a bit. Would definitely recommend for food although the place is a but dull for a night out!

Greene King pub situated on the A205 South Circular slightly west of Putney town centre.

It's a fairly unremarkable single bar pub, recently given a serious contemporary-style makeover. It's now got the trademark wood flooring, and mixture of settees, high tables etc and the obligatory pastel shaded walls. There's a dining area towards the rear.

On my recent lunchtime visit, there were several customers watching the motor racing on a reasonably unobtrusive plasma screen. There's a smoking area and garden out at the back, together with several tables on the pavement at the front for breathing in the traffic fumes as the bumper-to-bumper traffic crawls past.

My pint of IPA at 2.80p was reasonable. Rev James was on as a guest, but I can't imagine there's much beer trade here.

Externally, small painted lettering on an outside wall proclaim this pub as being "probably the oldest pub in Putney". The word "probably" is written in smaller letters ( as an afterthought?) and I understand that the well-known Bricklayers Arms is actually the oldest.

In case you're wondering about the provenance of the non-PC pub name, the local CAMRA guide tells us that this refers to the Arab servant of the person who built the pub in 1849, and to whom the pub was bequeathed.

I've not got this pub on my list for an imminent re-visit

The last few years has seen Putneys numerous quality pubs stripped down and reimaged as trendy city pubs, which is a real shame in my opinion. This is one of the few places I can find that still shows football, which is only one of a few good reasons to go here it has nice beer, fine bar staff and a pretty relaxed atmosphere. It too was recently renovated, but did manage to retain most of its charm although I lament the loss of the quiz machine

My Dad used to play the piano here in the late 60's. His piano has gone since the very good refurb. Warm and welcomimg Sunday lunch with Greene King offerings well kept. Mixed and lively clientele. Despite it being rather too expensive it is worth another visit.

Popped in here last night for a couple - not a bad place at all since the refurb. Staff were friendly and welcoming.....

Definitely worth a revisit soon!

This is a long pub with a very small bar area and limited seating out the front and a beer garden at the rear. During my visit Abbott and GK IPA were available along with some standard lagers, Hoegarden, Guinness and Strongbow.

I found the barmaid to be nice and the pub to be comfortable. There is a plasma screen, but I saw no sport advertised.

This pub is ok, but I wouldnt go out of my way.

Went at the weekend.....has been done up, but with good lighting. Lovely chairs, top bar staff and great food.
Well done. 2nd best pub in putney.

Now reopened but have not been in yet so my comment below is now historical and doesn't apply to the reopened version.

This is now really bad. A few years ago it was popular. Assume due for conversion to flats or something. Shame.
daisy1 - 28 Jun 2008 01:08
Very tired inside, but I guess some people like that. The ceiling beams are still covered with those rubbish quotes and phrases about drinking that became all the rage (thankfully briefly) in the mid-nineties. My CSI-style forensic deducing leads me to conclude that this explains the state of the interior.

Beer's nothing great (IPA was rubbish) and the place has a slightly down-at-heel feeling generally.

Have been using this place since Jim Thompsons banned football after the dreaded 'refurb'.

It has friendly regulars, welcoming barstaff and landlord - exactly what's required from a local and a refreshing change from Putney's ever growing (and unwanted), plural poncery.

nice.

No live music anymore. No Food. Grubby toilets. Sport when the landlord feels like it. And some offensive and loud talking clients.

In my opinion, dont bother.

Had a drink here on sevral occassions. Very mixed crowd from Builders and plumbers, to students and a few people who seem to annoy everyone else.

If you need any work done on your house, then this place is the place to go with its variety of workers, all willing to offer free advice once you get to know them.

Sky sports has just been returned after the landlord decided to remove it. According to regulars in the pub, this was down to the fact that one table of people (who seem to think that everyone should hear their conversation) complained about football being on. A lot of the regulars moved to other pubs, but sometimes come back.

A mixture of beers, largers, spirits etc. Used to do food, but not anymore.

Many years ago, used to be a gay pub. Still have a few people coming in, all seem to be accepted by the regulars.

A good place to use as a meeting point for friends before moving on. Not worth staying for a night out.

Now has a later liscense for friday and saturnday.

I quite liked this place for a swift half on the way home. Had forgotten what GK IPA should taste like - but here it was excellent.
beeronaut - 23 Jul 2006 23:20
Everyone descend on this pub for the 18th October for some top quality boozing as 3 class lads come of age. An opportunity to witness the fitness dressed in such propostity such as Putney Leisure Centre, Popularity and if you're really lucky, a bisep. Expect 100 ridiculously dressed people. Loving it!!

As this pub goes: rather variable clientel, grubby toilets and furniture, good locals and provocatively arrogant young drinkers, Wait a second that's us.
anonymous - 14 Oct 2005 17:53
teeters on the brink or being a 'normal' pub - i.e has a mix of types and ages.

okay but nothing special. Live football.
evers - 29 Aug 2005 15:16
Please do not compare this dive to the old Jolly Gardeners!

Putney is not exactly overflowing with good boozers and this one is no exception to the rule.

2.5 out of 10.

mrpant - 26 Jul 2005 13:17
Bit of a 'local' pub. Went in there for the first time a few weeks back (on the weekend) and was confronted with 'chav central'. Couldn't move for Burberry, tattooed scaffolders and teenage mothers of 3. However, on a mid-week re-visit it had a completely different clientele and a much more relaxed feel.
Rusty_the_diplomat - 27 May 2005 12:55
Bliss on Fulham match days. None of the crowds of the High St & possibly one of the last yuppie free pubs in the area. Sky Sports on several TVs & the IPA was pretty good as well. If you liked the old Jolly Gardeners (pre sofas), then you will like this as well.
Wilson MacDonald - 2 Nov 2004 15:56
This is a nice local pub - makes a change from the chain pubs on the high street. Not sure what the other comments on this sight were based on, but I can only assume they caught this pub on a VERY bad day.
tortoise - 24 Jan 2004 23:53
Used to be one of the most bohemian joints in SW15 believe it or not. Leaded glass windows and dark, dark wood gave it a slightly sinister look.

Now look at it! Jesus wept! If you wan't an indifferent pint in smelly surroundings pop in! It's my local too :-( !!!!!!
Franz Kafka - [email protected] - 9 Nov 2003 15:27
Very disappointing pub. The live musicians sing like pop idol rejects and on Friday nights it's full of wide boys. The last time I went in there 3 blokes had a fight over a failed drug deal. Not the best...
indie - 14 Oct 2003 11:53
great live music esp. Emmy performing on the 24th of Aug and Hannah performing on the 20th of Sept
anonymous - 19 Aug 2003 16:27
nice little garden - on a slope though
anonymous - 10 Jul 2003 00:03
good live music
anonymous - 4 Mar 2003 09:06
Lacks any kind of character. Used to be a 'gay' pub, and was probably a lot more fun then than now.
Shame it is such a dead loss as it is the nearest pub to my flat!
Mike - [email protected] - 12 Nov 2002 14:13
This place is actually quite good. The food is good, the atmosphere alright. Nice to watch the football. Has a locals feel, rather than a Putney 'rah' feel.
