4th and last pub in 1 afternoon in Eltham and it’s my first visit to the Antic run Eltham GPO.
I used to drink here in the early to 00’s when it was the Old Post Office and this was the pub I met the wife in, in January 2005.
Re-opened in February 2014 by Antic. The external signage still shows The Old Post Office as the pub name!
Spacious inside and is furnished in typical Antic shabby chic style with various bric-a-brac wall and floor standing adornments like typewriters, sewing machines, postal items and other various knick knacks.
There were 5 ales on and I opted for a pint of the Antic’s own brewed Vim.
Food is available and was proving quite popular.
Fairly dark inside like other Antic pubs and it’s worth noting there is a side yard garden for outside drinking.
A decent enough Antic pub with good ale choice.

Been taken over by Antic so that usually means good ale and decent food. Will visit shortly.
Its been re-opened , Over priced , not a place that I would take my family to for quality or comfort ..........
Recently had a flyer for this place put through my letterbox. Proudly advertising special nights with drinking games etc, and an upcoming night when it is "all you can drink for 25". Just about sums up this dumps target clientele
I honestly have no idea how this place is still open. Went in there once at six on a Sunday evening with my brother, we were the only two in there. Ordered a pint and a quarter of an hour later the landlord comes over and says "I'm gonna close lads, you can have one more if you like though", with a real air of defeat in his voice. We all felt embarrassed by this stage so we downed our drinks and left. Very surreal.
Still looks a thoroughly unpleasant place for a pint. They can keep closing it and re-opening, but you cannot polish a turd :)
Still will not go in as the chavs have returned, prefer the Park Tavern across the road.
This pub has been revamped, and part of it is now a restaurant. Well advertised in the local free papers as the place to go, will try it out sometime soon.
Yes, it has re-opened, but the windows are all blacked out, perhaps they are expecting a visit from the Luftwaffe.
Yes, it has re-opened, but each Saturday I walk past I never see any customers, last Sat. a man was outside inviting me in for a drink, telling me it was 50p cheaper than the Park Tavern, 50 yds away. No thanks.
I have it on good authority, that this pub has now re-opened and is under new management. Might give it a look see soon! ;)
Passed here on Sat. night, it was all lit up, the bar was well stocked and illuminated, a couple of bods wandering around. Is it about to re-open?
Closed?! Thank the good lord for that one! I assume off sales of extra-strong cider and wife beater have been rocketting! A move by JDW from the Bankers Draft into there would be generally welcome though in an ideal world I wish someone like Fullers would buy it!
Yippee, it has closed. The grapevine tells me that Wetherspoons are negotiating to buy it, what a relief. The only worry is, what pub is going to be ruined when the chavs move on.
Cask Marque - don't make me laugh - this wouldn't win an award for anything apart from perhaps direst pub of the year. No life, no interest, absolute rudeness from staff and clientele guaranteed. Disabled toilet key never available. On the rare occasions it was, toilet misused by able bodied clientele. Avoid it like the plague!
An absolute dive of the first order. Gave it 1 out of 10 purely because it performs a service by keeping its clientele out of other pubs. Have tried it out at various times in the 5 years I have lived in Eltham, and each time I leave wondering why I bothered! Close it down or do something with it!
So glad I'm not the only one who thinks that this pub should be closed down. Cos its quite near my work I pop in from time to time for a (half decent) sandwich with friends or a quick one after work, but it is dirty, soul-less, with chav bar staff who find magazines and the argos catalogue more interesting than customers, drug exchanging going on in full view and not so subtle quick trips to the disgusting toilets located up 3 flights of stairs. the managers (if you ever see one) couldn't give a flying duck about the place and its clientele - how on earth do they get away with it? chinese girls in short skirts bothering you every few minutes selling dvds (enthusiastically welcomed by the management). This could have potential, but I'd much rather the tiny weatherspoons around the corner. the post office is utterly disgusting, and getting worse.

In response to middenmakers last couple of comments, what is going on here is exactly what is to be expected of, in probably, the scummiest and most low-life pub in the south of England. I paid a few visits here to The Old Post Office (see my earlier short review) and whilst I left with my teeth intact, there was fighting on each occasion, I was offered illegal substances and the menace in the air was just intolerable and ask yourself this. Is a place, reportedly frequented by those embroiled in the murder of Steven Lawrence worthy of a visit by decent citizens? Nope, thought not.

Walked passed on Sat. evening about 5pm and looked in, loads of chavs running about, and yes, there she was again, a women with fag in gob changing a baby on one of the tables, what is going on here.
OH dear, what is happening to this place. Cold and draughty, side door always open. Threadbare carpets and the bogs a mile away. Pull it down and start again.
Went in this pub last week at lunchtime, I could not believe it, my wife and I just wanted a quiet drink mid shopping, but we found the pub littered with chavs, one was actually changing a baby on a table at the raised section, which they appear to have taken over, with a fag sticking out of her gob. Do none of these 18-25 yr olds go to work, the new manager has a lot to learn about paying customers, not just oiks using it as a meeting place.
New manager. Sorting out the food menu and extending service hours, so in future should be able to get a decent bit of grub while watching the footy. Bringing back sky sports. At the moment its dead, but hopefully the new manager will turn it round and keep the scum out.

Frequently by some of those accused of Stephen Lawrence's murder. 'Nuff said. Avoid.

I've been in this pub twice and both times I witnessed a mass brawl! This pub obviously attracts Elthams finest. If you like violence, intimidation and been offered coke in the toilets, this is the pub for you. Avoid at all costs.

Agree with the other comments. I visited one lunchtime last week. No real ale despite Cask Masque and one young barmaid who ignored the people who roamed around trying to sell things to the few customers that were there. They used to sell a reasonable pint of pride but I don't think you find one here for a long time

As a Post Office it would have been a useful community building. As a pub it appears to be a gathering place for local undesirables seeking cheap beer, clubby music and unintelligent conversations. There are enough warning signs around advising what not to wear and how to behave and quite frankly if it attracts the sort of people that need to be policed every minute of the day then the pub needs to be given a wide berth. Just in case you do feel it necessary to rub shoulders with some of Elthams dumbest, expect to have your evening monitored on CCTV. Dont expect any decent beers despite the Cask Marque symbol the barman advised me that none of the handpumps are used so its keg beer and lagers (I never realized how foul Marsdens Pedigree can be as a keg beer), usually at discounted prices so very affordable for the "barely out of school" brigade. It is a bit of a shame because the building is reasonably attractive and has a few features of merit including a decent large fireplace however the owners seem to think that fruit machines are more important than the dcor and the over abundance of these money grabbing boxes are enough to satisfy Las Vegass most addicted gambler. Not one of the must visit pubs in the area unless you are under 20 and have a limited outlook of what makes a good pub.

New guvnor at the postie now. Sound fella, has already got rid of most of the chavs.
Decent grub in there as well

Chavs, baseball caps and surly looks completes the hatrick of shame that this pub has degenerated into. Prime example of Munter's law for all to see.
Fri/sat night this pub is mostly filled with nob heads trying to be gangsters. pint aint too bad. Decent service, and the grubs alrite as well.

Agree totally with below, Looks nice obviously spent abit tarting place up BUT staff misserable and lazy serving seems to be a chore and cleaning and tidying not in the Job description. Potentially smart place but with lax attitudes and customers complete shit-hole

never have i seen such a decline in a pub. This pub started life as an honest bar serving good food, and of an evening was an acceptable place to have a meal and a pint. If you like Sky Sports (2 large screens) and enjoy a pint and a fight, this is the pub for you. With the closure of the Chequers this has become the Sh*tehole of Eltham. Baseball caps, jogging bottoms and owning a Vauxhall Nova with 'KENWOOD' on the back are a must !

Food based pub, nice decor and location. Shame about staff lazy and apathetic. Had 2 meals in here, first time had fish and chips and when food arrived told no ketchup no tartare sauce nothing, no veg (both the later included on menu) no refund no offer of refund, no cuttlery waited 3 mins while they washed some! Second time; 10 minutes after ordering told 4 of 6 items were off menu, reordered - 5 minutes later 2 of 4 not available! when food arrived no veg told that they had run out been busy! Customers typical Eltham crowd - rough. Friday/Sat night - smart casual, so no trainers or jeans, supprised a dump like this could turn people away!
