please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.
This place is located in the original part of The City from 350 plus years ago. In the old alleyways near Change Alley it was visited by Charles Dickens - is mentioned in the Pickwick Papers - the G&V has been in existence for a very long time, certainly back to the 1600s. When you enter you are transported back a century or more and The Hell Fire club was founded here.
Let's get things straight, this is a CHOP HOUSE - if you are going for a gastronomic experience, or limit yourself to dining at The Mercer or Gaucho (or would never consider Welsh Rarebit as pudding) then please don't come here because you'll hate it. It is a pretty basic English food menu with either red or white wine. You are put either in booths or share long refrectory types of table. Should give you a clue.
Not a pub - go to the Jampot for a sharpener first or afterwards.

One of the best lunchtime restaurants in the City, great British food served by very experienced staff, i strongly recommend the port & Stilton at the end of the meal.

Went to this pub thinking "those reviews can't all be right", but unfortunately they were.
Firstly, its not a pub. Its a very low standard and expensive attempt at a restaurant. A poor steak and kidney pie with sides and 2 beers came to over 30 a head. Service was ok, but it should be for that price.
Its gets a rating of 1 (as opposed to 0) because if you wanted to recommend a "restaurant" to someone you don't like, then it can still be used.

Sadly no longer the fine City establishment it used to be. What has changed, I wonder? Food very average and expensive, with unfriendly and rude staff making it a poor experience indeed. I'll be going to Simpsons next time.

A very disappointing and unpleasant experience - a 45 minute wait for very mediocre food, overcharged at the end and VERY RUDE staff when we tried to clarify the bill. We won't be returning or recommending that any of our City colleagues do so.

This is not even a pub. So I don't know why it's on this website.

This is a City bankers restuarant that is only open Mon - Fri from 12 midday till 3pm! Its no longer a bar, just a restuarant. It *is* interesting is that its the building that the infamous `Hellfire Club` started in, in the late 17th Century (google for it). I tried to take photos of the inside, but they escorted me to the door! And so, to recap, no bar, very unfriendly and also difficult to find! Apart from the interesting history of the place, I would avoid.

Traditional English pub in the city. Great for a pint.
