Very good, well run pub serving Sheps ales along with two guests. Food good, beer festival worth a visit. Nice garden for the Summer months, and drinking area also available at front of pub. Plenty of parking at side.

Went in today after the tadworth run at epsom. Excellent poachers moon ale for me and good vino for other half. Great log fire too. See what other posters mean about the number of kids but to be fair the family section and non-kids section were quire well separated for dining. Good food. Would def go again next year after the run.

Excellent beer festival on last weekend. Was in sunday and enjoyed it so much, took some friends there Monday.Sun jazz and great beer.Well done to the woolpack.
|
Apparently the Woolpack has a beer festival on the weekend of the 24th (Friday start) September.

Pubs should not have kids in them period.
Too many good pubs are being spoilt by uncontrolled noisy brats. Take the little darlings to a cafe and leave the pubs to the adults.

Had to laugh at the 2 recent reviews by the same person, one complains of the noisy young children and the next about elderly loud male drunks, what age group will behave then?! Joking aside had another great Sunday lunch, got there at one and the whole place was heaving. We were given a table within 5 minutes though and although had a fair wait for our lunch was up to the great standard we experienced last time, considering they are so busy just don't know how they do it when other establishments just don't seem to be able to cope. Although I am a great fan a few weeks ago went for Friday lunch with a friend and service great and place heaving but it wasn't anything to write home about. We both chose the burger and it was quite frankly just not very nice, bit embarrassing for me as had sung the praises of the place, wish we had chosen anything else to be honest as they even do roast in the week. But as you see hasn't put us off and in my opinion the place goes from strength to strength. Husband loves the choice of real ales and as a wine drinker the wine is well kept by the glass. Never got to try the bistro offer it has ended!

Went there again for the Tuesday afternoon jazz. Good, well served Shepherd Neame beer.

After my last favourable review a couple of days ago I visited again yesterday in the late afternoon. It was quiet outside with a few people in the restaurant. The main part of the pub was dominated by a small group of loud elderly male drunks swearing loudly and often, despite the close proximity of a female who looked quite put out. The staff took no notice at all.
The art of running a good pub is never to allow one group to dominate and not to allow cliques. I'm not sure what the licensees' stance is on this but to run a good pub you need to stamp your personality on it. I was on my own but if I had been with my wife I would have left immediately and thereby hangs the problem. People love to ban the smoking ban, taxes etc etc for the demise of pubs but I believe one of the main reasons is that now when you go into a pub you never know what sort of atmosphere you're entering sp people stay away.
The abandonment of the saloon/public system is the main reason and this pub lends itself perfect to such a divide.

This pub has come on a bundle, thanks undoubtedly to the reasonably new custodians. Good selection of beers, efficient and friendly service. Between 6pm and 7pm on Saturday it was very busy, the word is getting round.
Only slight downside, the modern plague of young noisy children.
|
Recently voted Shepherd Neame's pub of the year for 2011 and thoroughly deserved.
The staff are absolutely brilliant and cater to all customers' needs and are very loyal and friendly. You are made to feel valued.

Good Sheps pub with two guest beers, all of good quality. Beer fest August bank holiday may be worth a visit. Food good, but not much for vegetarians.

Called in for Sunday lunch at about 4pm, love the fact that The Woolpack serves late on a Sunday but was a bit apprehensive as sometimes if you eat later than 2pm in a pub for Sunday roast you get dried up offerings. Not a bit of it, everything was excellent, especially the lovely selection of freshly cook vegetables. Couldn't fault it at all and at a very reasonable 8.95. We will definitely be back especially for the weekend Bistro offer, in fact was going to return this Sunday but were nearer to another pub that we had a good experience in before. Wish we hadn't bothered and had given our business to The Woolpack!

I really like this pub, been on a Thursday night for quiz night and it was packed, good atmosphere and good food. Went for Sunday lunch today, was equally as busy and the food just as good. My only recommendation is that it could be a bit more family friendly, whilst the staff were very welcoming to me and my three young children, it lacked a childrens menu, some crayons and some colouring paper would of been ideal to keep the children entertained whilst waiting for our food. As mentioned before food was very good. I did feel bit rushed to leave although, I know it was very busy in there and the table was needed but nevertheless I don't like to be rushed! I was offered my and paid my bill whilst my kids were finishing their deserts and I had almost a full glass of wine!!! Perhaps not the ideal place to take children, it certaintly wouldn't put me off going again, next time child free!

There are so few pubs in Banstead these days. The Surrey Yeoman and the Sheepshearers, both shown on the Ordnance Survey maps, seem to be no more. The Olive Tree is a tapas bar with a banner about booking early for Christmas (in February?!!) and in any case warning signs that if you park your car here you'll be shot, or something. So I wonder why the Woolpack wasn't busier on a Friday lunchtime? Especially as you get: a very friendly welcome, a selection of five interesting cask beers, and an amazing menu. The meal I had was delicious - and they even apologised for the slight delay (and it really wasn't that long) while they cooked it. I'll be back.
|
Good pints of Shepherd Neame beers. They have jazz on the first Tuesday of the month, with the bands changing on a four month rotation.
|
I used to like this pub a few years ago when it was a different chain. I don't get up to Banstead all that often so called in when there last week. In fact I think the pub now is even better, with a decent selection of beers including guests, and decent food at reasonable prices. Seems to be popular with the old folk from the bowling club at lunchtimes but that actually helped the general atmosphere of the place. Given a tidy up aswell and the garden is quite a suntrap. Give this pub a try.
|
Not a bad pub maybe the only one in Banstead, fairly traditional, now sells Shepherd Neame ales including Bishops Finger on draught plus other Kentish ales.
|
I think Woodmansterne must have been banned from all the local pubs. This is not a bad pub. The Victorai down the other end of the High Street was better but greed had had it turned into a pizza place. So its the Woolpack or nothing. and in these circumstances I'd take the pub, which at least sells a decent enough pint.
|
THIS PLACE IS ABSOLUTELY RUBBISH, THE FOOD IS DIRE AND THE BEER TASTES LIKE P***. AVOID / AVOID / AVOID
|
NOT A LOT I CAN SAY REALLY OK I SUPPOSE

visited this pub on sunday, the first bank holiday weekend in may,had a lovely steak meal for less than a tenner, my wife and our friends enjoyed their meals too. was surprised footie wasn't on, but when we got there, there was a good family atmosphere and the staff were friendly. stayed there the rest of the evening where a very good four piece live band called 'alter ego' performed, which finished off a perfect evening.
|
Excellent turnaround of a basic pub to a very good one. Same management,I believe, as the Dukes Head in Tadworth. Good parking, food and friendly staff - and entertainment. Just shows what effort and ability can do.

The Woolpack has had a bad reputation in the past but since the current landlady has been there the woolpack has consolidated its position as the only decent pub in the banstead/chipstead area! It is a friendly local with very high quality drinks, though not cheap, as well as very edible pub grub. The local drinkers and bar staff are friendly and the place has a good atmosphere. I wouldnt recommend it as a place to take children but is perfect for a bite to eat or a good drinking session.

I believe this pub had a "reputation" a few years back. No sign of that on my visit last night. What I found was a decent friendly local.
Neither an uber trendy wine bar, nor an old fashioned roaring-fire and snug-bar public house, it may be a bit bland for some tastes. A middle-of-the road, know what you're getting kind of place. The Bryan Adams of the pub world, if you like.
For a quiet Sunday-night pint or two, it's just what you need.

this pub has really changed not so much fun any more

Last night we stopped at The Woolpack in Banstead for dinner. From the outside this looks like a typical country pub. Inside it is an old-fashioned pub as seen in London many years ago. The food is excellent and not over-priced. I had a great shortcrust steak and ale pie with my favourite Young's Biiter and Selina enjoyed her sausages and mash with a good French Vin de Pays Rouge. This is the third time we have visited Banstead and the third time we have used this pub, the last two visits being solely for that purpose. I guess that says it all. Does this pub have any competition ? We have not seen any other pubs in the area.
|
If you must visit a pub while in Banstead, you won't run out screaming. Decent food, a bit tatty on the inside.
|
Personally I've always liked the Woolpack after John the old guv (from Sunderland) left. You get some v friendly staff there, for instance Shrek was great for a laugh especially when his beloved Sunderland was on tv. I haven't been there since Xmas (I live in Newcastle now) but I'd definitely suggest it as a place to go. Good collection of friendly regulars and some great bar staff who are always friendly. The food is pretty good, wished they'd kept the sky for the football but other than that its brilliant.

fresh food, v.clean, freindly staff always smiling , new landlord/landlady always up for a laugh with the cumstomers , i love it here

i have to agree with KRobbo81, the service you get is great, they dont leave you waiting at the bar there on you straight away. the landlady makes you feel very welcome. so all i have is praise for the place, highly recommended, and by the way, i never see any chavs in there....

Contrary to the comments and after a couple of visits I have to disagree. I have found this an enjoyable place to enjoy a drink, have a nice bite to eat and spend time with friends. The service from an excellent bar staff is superb and don't leave you waiting for long to be served. I totally recommend this pub and will definitely be visiting more often. Excellent work!

The Woolpack in Banstead is actually Ok. Yes, it is quite chavvy. No, it isn't the sort of pub you'd want to take your granny to. And no, it isn't the greatest pub in the World. However, some 'Woolpack facts' for you in support of this fine pub...
It's the best pub in the Banstead area by some way. If you don't believe me, visit the others. In fact, despite the chavness of the place, there are a number of other pubs within a one mile radius that manage to outchav it by some way e.g. "The Wheatsheaf."
They put on an excellent effort during "special" times of the year e.g. the world cup, Christmas etc. The landlord, who, weirdly enough, you never see at other times of the year, appears to spend entire days getting the place decorated and right into the spirit of things...
Despite being scandously underused, the pub garden at the rear of the building is nice and there's also a pretty decent seating area at the front, perfect for those 'warmer evenings.'
The prices aren't too bad. It's a John Barras pub, so, if you can overlook the "2 meals for 7" posters that litter the walls and decroate the tables, you get a pretty reasonable deal for your money.
There's a pool table and a couple of decent games machines! And they serve an outstanding Ceasar Salad in there!
