Basic boozer with nothing to recommend it. Other pubs are far better.

If you and the kids are lucky enough to stumble into one of the weekend summer events in the big garden, like I did last summer, you'll be glad you did - large bouncy castle, burger range, outside band, face painting, giant chalk board(!!)... Also, you can flip between the gardens of this pub and The Castle in the next road as their gardens are practically back to back. Two very different pubs a few meters from each other. Marvellous!

ok pub just off the high street, wasnt many in on a heavy rainy sunday night.front door a squeeze for the larger person.looked closed from outside as no outside lights were on.friday and saturdays live music.
|
A real old spit and polish boozer but with plenty of character. Bare wooden floorboards and hard wooden seats abound but it doesn't seem to matter. A choice of 2 real ales with 1 unused pump. No food but still worth a visit.

Not been in a pub quite so dilapidated as this for some time. lights broken and people so drunk they couldn't stand. Grim.
|
gone right downhill

Today (23/6/10) I've just watched a repeat of the old 'Relocation Relocation' programme on More 4 featuring this pub, but I see from the current pub website that Dean Brand and family are no longer running it. Anyone know what happened - it all seemed to be going very well for them. Maybe they've moved on to something bigger and better.

I want to retract a lot of what I said in my earlier message.
I've since been back, and the juke box and live music has returned.
The only, slightly, negative thing is the type of juke box they've installed. Your tunes can be superceeded by people who put songs on after you. The order is dictated by where the tunes are on the juke box, rather than when they were put on. As a result, despite there only being 5 people in the pub, I only heard 3 of my chosen 9 songs in the 1.5 hrs I was there. I think the locals have the advantage of experience over me!

This used to be the best pub in Sandown, until Dean & Sam took over it
One of the first things they did was rip out the juke box, which was the main source of entertainment. Also, they hardly ever have live entertainment any more, when once groups like the 'Tinlids' could be found there every other week.
Dean's concentration on food wasn't what this, once quaint, chilled, friendly and entertaining, pub needed.
The pub is now a shell of it's former self and the heart has been torn out of the place.

This place has everything going for it which is why I suppose it's used by the locals-always a good sign. Bar staff friendly, beer good and a good atmosphere.

Looking forward to popping into the Old Comical when we come over to Sandown in July. Having seen Dean & Sam on Relocation show this week, looks as though they have made a real success of taking over the pub, can't wait to pop in for a bevvy or 2.

Certainly the best pub in Sandown.I visit the island about 4 times each year and always make a point of visiting the Old Comical. The pub has a great atmosphere and the beer is always spot-on particularly the Abbott ale.I will be visiting Sandown in Feb for my birthday and will be sure to pop in for pint or two.Carry on the good work.
Best wishes Jeff

I'll have to admit, the morning did not start well.
There we were, my girlfriend and I, walking through Sandown and trying to find her some sandles and trying to dodge the dead eyed, lumbering scum that were clogging the streets like poisoned rats blocking a sewer.
I was just suggesting that wolves should be released to savage the population, only the quick or clever would servive when the girlf said "Look, a pub sign. Let's invesitigate."
So we arrived at the Old Comical and had a drink. Chilled out atmos, good beer and plenty of wood and stone and little 'theme pub seaside' bollocks. Locals propped up the bar, chattering, with life in their eyes and speed in their limbs.
An oasis of decency and sanity. Thank you.

Hi Sam and I would like to say thanks for all your kind words, it really makes us feel good that our efforts so far are appreciated. All are welcome and if you are visiting the Island please take the time to come and experience Sandown for your self it truly is a wonderfull place to live. If you come and have a drink with us i'm sure you will understand why we chose the Comical over the Griffin!!!
Kind regards
Dean, Sam, & baby William

Since Dean and Sam have taken over the Pub has a new lease of life. You will get a very friendly and warm welcome. Bill the the barman affectionately known as "fatty" is chatty pleasant and efficient. He knows how to keep a god beer. This is a genuine "proper" British pub. I've been using it for the last 10 years as a regular visitor to Sandown.
