Popped in on a Saturday lunchtime. Landlord very friendly, Doombar on top par, friendly atmosphere.

love it or hate it (I always loved the place) word has it that this institution closes at the end of November for good. So if you want to spend half an hour in a Pompey time capsule and take a look at more naval memorabilia than you can shake a stick at - pop down quick before its too late. It will probably be another Kebab house soon.

Reminds me of garrison pubs when i was in the army 3 drunks -- one of them slumped on the bar and that was the women
Some of the locals looked a bit threatening but maybe it was just the ambience
Probbaly a good joint if you are looking for a scary time

Staff were friendly enough but the impression I got was that if you're not military or ex military you'll find it a bit harder to fit in with the clientele. Having said that 1 guy sat at the bar was friendly enough, had a bit of a chat. The beer was good though.

I used to use this pub when I was in the mob, haven't been to Pompey for years but intend to this year. Sorry to herar about Ruby, I always called the place Ruby's more ships' badges on the wall than any other pub I knew, good beer brilliant atmosphere. Does Lance the postman still use the place? the hours we used to spend putting the world to rights and doing the crossword was nobody's business

Great pub, great people on both sides of the bar! It's how other posters have described it - a pub! How pubs should be! Go there and lap it up!

This is a great pub which is what pubs are all about..no frills or gimmicks but good beer and friendly people.I to remember Ruby she was a real pub landlady. Love this pub long may it remain as Ruby left it

This pub will forever be' Ruby's' to me. First went in here in around 1990, when Ruby was still alive. The pub today doesn't seem to have changed at all. In fact there was a rumor that it was being run by her relatives. Still a great old pub serving good beer. Recommended.

This pub has always been rough and ready and all the better for that, a working mens pub and doesnt apologise for it. Having said that took my wife to the pub as it is very interesting inside with Navy memorabelia and they couldnt have been friendlier. It is a genuine step back in time and even since old Ruby (long standing former landlady) passed on it has been kept the same. Ifd you are in Portsmouth and want to experience a pub from the 50's give it a go I dont think you will be disappointed.

Home at last! Well, that was the feeling I got when I walked into this lovely old pub again tonight. Absolutely brilliant.
|
This is what real, local pubs used to be like. Small, friendly, chatty, with an atmosphere of its own. About as far from an anonymous chain pub as you could get.
|
Got character, enjoy a few in here no thrills basics!
|
Friday lunchtime. Blokes loud standing outside.....made it not very welcoming to go and have a drink. Shame as we like "proper" pubs where people like to chat
|
A Navy pub with plenty of local characters! Small bar area. Courage Directors bitter was on tap when I visited, decent pint of Guinness served.
Possibly not a pub to attend for football fans wearing away colours.
|
Great old sailors pub. Ships crests everywhere, one or two are mine, painted when I was a ships painter.
|
this is a regular drinkin place for me its got a lovely atmosphere and the people in there are all very nice and chat to any one.
|
