all i can say is the popinjay has been my safe haven friendly staff friendly locals !!!! its had its past but havnt we all ?? we all should of learnt the famous saying by now 'do not judge a book by its cover !!!' its a lovely pub :-)

An absolutely DIRE dump of a pub. This grim place is firmly stuck in the gutter of Calcutta. I'd rather drink beer in a bus shelter and feel safer than risk another visit to this dreadful place. One to be avoided at all costs.

Very good and very well run pub, quite excellent. Very friendly staff and locals. It has a proper pub atmosphere, unlike somewhere like the Portsmouth Arms.

I don't what the last 2 posters have a problem with personally. Maybe they're scared of tattooed taxi drivers who've originated, like most people living on this estate, from the South London suburbs. The fact that the majority of the locals in here originate from the South London moves in the late sixties, early seventies just adds flavour to this pub. In the past it has had a chequered history, it even had a couple of lesbian women as landladies who tried their damnedest to turn it into a gay boozer! That thankfully didn't work. It also had a landlord who could've been the inspiration for Al Murray's Pub Landlord, both in looks & in style. He thankfully disappeared a while ago now, although the footy nights back then were funny as hell as he'd get more drunk than the customers! The pub is now well decorated, well run & the food & beers are good too. Probably the best run estate pub in Basingstoke now & Basingstoke has a lot of estates!

You will need some form of weapon to be safe in here! If you enjoy regular family fights and morons with pool cues staring at you, have fun. Otherwise avoid. I had one pint which was very good though.

Rough, un-reformed local on one of Basingstoke's worst council estates. Sit somewhere near the windo so you can keep an eye on you car & for gawd's sake don't spill anhyone's pint.

nowhere near as scary as you might think! Friendly staff and locals and a great selection of drinks, even if they don't stock it they will probably order it in for you!

at least the staff ar friendlier than that misery who runs the soldiers down the road

its been a while since i have visited the popinjay, during the day you could lean over the bar and help yourself to beer and get slaughtered for a couple of pound (buy one and get five free)

I liked my visit to the Popinjay earlier on today. A lovely pint of Courage Best was to be enjoyed, as well as a win on the fruity. Marvellous

The pop has a good in pub social scene with some lots of out of pub activity. This includes very active golf trips organised by "Amanda's dad" and some national level and even world level pool players. If you play crib though make sure you have your maths head on and watch out for "crunchie" stealing a few holes round the corner. Some smashing barmaids will only be too happy to serve you.

the pop was in a right state until it was taken over by steve & julie and it is now a pleasure to drink in there a lot of effort has been put into getting the pop back to how it should be and we even have a good sing song some voices better than others overall 10/10

the popinjay has recently been taken over by new local owners. they have redecorated both of the bars, and are working on the rest of the pub. The atmosphere is great if you are looking for a friendly place to spend the evening. Darts, pool and dominoes available. Live football on Sky, although at present no premiership plus until the new season starts.

The Popinjay's been renovated! Not a shadow of it's former self and now very very lovely
|
A bit dodgy. Only a little bit though. In one of Basingstoke's roughest housing estates and if you go in there the regulars will only drink bottles. I wonder why...............
