This pub is closed and boarded up

Appears the "new determined manageress" did not have the desired effect - is now closed.

went for a drink before getting train was not impressed. interior is ok modern etc and i like the booths which is always good to have a catch up with mates but the bar staff lack customer service and they have never heard of cocktails. note to bar staff: customer walks in just follow this script: good morning/afternoon/evening how ya doing? what can I get you today thanks very much that will be x amount. hope ya enjoy your drink/day
simple. dont grunt at me.

The comments about this pub dont do it justice! And neither does the picture. Its newly modern interior and exterior make it the best looking pub in surbiton.
The pub is apparently under new management, and the chavs are now leaving- probably going to weatherspoons!
The good people of Surbiton now have a nice place to eat and drink! The new determined manageress is eager to turn this pub around and its working. Now all she needs is the support of the good people around surbiton to keep business going and the chavs out .
Overall good drink, good food and a great friendly modern atmosphere!!!
Has to be visited to believe how this pub is changing!

Had a swift half of Pride in here whch was ok. Also had Bombardier which wasn't on, Fruli, Star and Erdinger. OK for a quick pint.

I live in Surby and up until last night had never ventured into this pub.
I now know why.
Hungry and looking for somewhere to watch the footy we thought we'd give it a whirl.
The food is cheap so wasn't expecting much, but we waited 35 minutes for bangers & mash and fish & chips only to find that the bangers were still not cooked (red inside! {what WERE you doing in that kitchen if you weren't cooking?]) and the fish and chips were bland as anything. Then when we said about the uncooked snags we were told we could only have crisps as the kitchen was now closed. Nice!
Couple that with the work-shy manageress and stroppy barmaid who spent most of the night outside smoking fags leaving just one girl on - you'd have to say "pile o' shite".
Only good thing about the place is that it's got a vending maching thingy to charge your mobile so maybe worth a pint if your battery was dead and you were waiting for a life or death phonecall (although you probably wouldn't be waiting for it in this chav-den), but otherwise go to Bosco's accross the road.

The barmaids have the best boobs in surbiton!
|
They have recently lost their only decent members of staff. If you like being short changed; spoken to rudely and you credit card cloned this is the place to go. They are currently being investigated by the police. New deputy manager has been investigated before for thieving.

While I imagine the atmosphere on a weekend could be on the fruity side, you can only judge on what you find. And on a quiet November Thursday night, it is a perfectly pleasant pub.
I thought the barstaff were excellent, and they had an impressive big dining table on a raised level, which remained empty all night. On reflection, I wish we'd sat there!
The toilets seemed a very long way away though. Someone could get lost down there and not be discovered for weeks!

OK, the refurb is quite stylishly done - very "of the moment" styling.
Here's the PR blurb:
The Orchid Group......launches its new Contemporary Drinking concept this week at .......Saint Marks in Surbiton. Saint Marks hope to unveil a whole new concept for style-conscious, sophisticated customers to experience and savour. The company says the "interiors provide an eclectic mix of decedent, retro, modern and contemporary design features". It hopes Contemporary Drinking will appeal to ABC1 professionals aged from mid-twenties to mid-forties who appreciate the latest in social trends, with a 40:60 male:female bias. Saint Marks is aimed at the ladies of Surbiton with its "sleek, glamorous and decadent interiors"
The reality:
No matter how stylish the interior is, if they keep flogging drink at dirt cheap prices (see previous post), they will just continue to attract the same chav crowd into Surbiton as they did before.
Refurbing the place without trying to change the clientelle means that this place is doomed to remain a chav pit.
Surbiton's bursting with 20-40 year old ABC1's, but with St Mark's previous reputation, most locals wouldn't go near it in a million years until they were sure that it had cleaned up its act.
There are better established alternatives for them at the minute - The Victoria, the new Harts Boat Yard, Gordon Bennetts, Rubicon.
Renovating the bar is the easy bit, now still need to convince Surbiton's ABC1's that they've refurbed the clientelle as well.

This had a refit in July 2007, and it is a bit of an improvement - the pub is more comfotable, and the selection fo beers vastly improved.
It is very cheap for the area (Staropramen @ 2.80 compared to 3.20 in most other places.) I think that this, combined with the fact that it is right next to the station and Wethersppons means that the pub has not really managed to shake off the chavs.
Improved, but still not one of the best.

I never managed to visit when it was the Rat and Parrot, but it can't have been worse than it is now? Took ages to get served as the bar staff were more keen on serving their mates although they were friendly enough when they did finally get round to me. Quiet on a Wednesday night but I'd imagine it gets packed out at the weekend. Basically, there are far better places in Surb than this!

what on earth is the landlord thinking of,this has to be the worst pub in the entire area, but at least it keeps the scum out of the other pubs, whoever runs (well he she dont run it)this lame excuse for a pub, should really try some other line of business, beer poor, service poor, and full of (as i said earlier)the dregs of surbiton, foul mouthed agressive chavs, shame on whoever calls themselves the landlord.

This is not a nice pub. It really has very few redeeming features. To its credit, the staff there are very good, service is friendly and efficient, and it is cheap.
However, the customers are a bit rough and ready and, though i've never seen any trouble in there, there is always a vauge feeling of menace. The people who seem to use the pub tend to be the types who like to get tanked up on cheap stella and hang around looking hard in an attempt to pull the rough women in there or to pick a fight with someone. Its all a bit pathetic really as they all should have grown out of that sort of behaviour by now..
Ill give it a 2 out of 10 for the fact that its good value and the staff are pleasant.

What can i say this is a wicked friendly pub, where you can walk up to the bar hardly no waiting time and once the staff no you that your drink will be ready before you hit the bar, Sports fan then watch any sport going all sports shown with a bookies next door what a way to have a pint, WICKED FOOD just like your mums cooking esp the all day breakfast and curry.
Drinking at night with your mates, what a better view then looking at the sexy bar staff, (aaron is a sex stud get your kit off.) The staff give you that one to one touch. Music is wicked and the pints are so cheap 2.20 for a pint of fosters.

full of chavs, flat beer but you get what you pay for!
|
bad pub - crampt, bad atmosphere, always fights and trouble when I've been there. Takes ages to be served at the bar. Rubbish lighting (haha)

Not quite sure what St Mark himself would think about the Rat & Parrot being renamed in his honour. St Mark's Chav-ern would be a more suitable title. Plenty of screens for televised sports and a live venue for some unlicenced others (boxing, wrestling etc)! A friend of mine though once saw Bubble (Big Bro celeb-for-5-minutes a few years back) being refused entry once so the bouncers must be doing something right.

Great place to watch Football, with 6 screens. Cheap John Smiths at 1.90 a pint. Place closing on 22/01/06 for renovation. Due to open a week later as the "St Mark's Tavern".

Mixed feeling about this pub. On the positive side staff friendly, they served really good value food and is good lunchtime. Changes face in the evenings when it can get rowdy. Our biggest criticism is the small space allocated to non smokers; under 10% of the seating and floor area which we found unacceptable, especially as this pub tends to have a smokey atmosphere.

Beach party with DJ 30th September....should be a crack!!!
|
Just moved to area with my wife this will definately be our new local. Staff are really friendly and know how to enjoy themselves while working.Went in on Friday night there was a Tarts And Vicar fancy dress night and what a night it was...Bad head big time on the saturday off the 2 for 5.50 cocktails...Keep up the good work guys

Possibly the worst bar service in Surbiton - and that is saying something. Dirty glasses and ashtrays stay on tables for hours and the bar staff seem incapable of noting who has been waiting for longest. A real hole.
|
Over priced drinks in a souless venue....if there prices were sensible to start with you wouldn't need special offers to get the punters pissed up ready for the ripoff normal prices.
|
It use to be a good nite out, pretty crap now, what happened, bring back the cheap cocktail nites.
|
bring back andy!!!!! he was wicked. really sorted the place out. charming, helpful young man. we loved him

Seems boring and expensive, food order was messed up....door staff make you feel very intimidated even if you're just walking past...would recommend the Coronation Hall over the road...at least the drinks are cheaper.

Inhabited by scrotes up from 'South Surbiton' who aren't old enough to get into any of the bars in Kingston yet.

yes true this place used to be the shit hole of surbiton but its got a new landlord andi who in a short while has turned the place around for the better

Good beer? My arse! Keg rubbish. 6.8/10? And the excellent Lamb around the corner gets 4? Who writes this rubbish? Worst pub in the area. These identikit chain pubs are bad enough, but when they serve only tasteless fizzy lager or John Smiths on keg, it becomes nigh on unbearable. Utterly appalling.
Matt Salts (the voice of reason) - 21 Nov 2002 12:09 |
previous staff were very rude especially with dealing with a friend of ours in a wheelchair - present staff are complete opposite and couldn't do any more to help. good food and beer and location, shame about the prices - combine this one and the coronation hall opposite and you would have an ideal pub
