please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Decent enough pub round an inauspicious back street where you can hear the hobo's on the freight train singing the songs of the railroad as they roar on the through Anerley.

Sam Smith's pub so Sam Smith's beer. No Castlemaine XXXX with lime for your nan in here old son!

Nothing not to like. Well worth a visit. Excellent value too.

Nice old fashioned pub by Anerley stations. Always pop in if Im passing by.
Samuels Smiths, so draft beer very cheap (You can comfortably buy three, sometimes for pints for less than £10. I prefer the Samuel Smith's bottled beers which they do sell but are much more pricery (£5 each on average).
Pool table, plus board games available. The food is pretty decent. Mix of age ranges/groups amongst clientele. The staff are friendly. Rather drunk people are still served more beer rather than being refused, which is either a positive or a negative depending if you are one or not..

Until you arrive, you might think that you have taken a wrong turn. Inside, plush leather seating, wood paneling on the walls and a 70s style carpet which may leave you with eye injuries. Samuel Smiths range. £1.55 a half of stout. Mixed age range clientele. I was enjoying the place until some scum came in. They stood out and hopefully the management will be able to gently encourage them to piss off somewhere else. They may have been refused service which would be a good start.

Went in on a couple of afternoons recently. Very clean and largely quiet and peaceful with well kept Sam Smiths. Loses a couple of points on the smell of fat that rather pervaded.

Went to go in here for a couple of pints on Wednesday night but the loitering clientele outside put me off.

I may venture back and actually go in on another occasion but I won’t rush

I have been in this pub twice and the contrast on each occasion was stark. On the first occasion my wife and I went in on a Saturday afternoon and although a bit empty it was fine.

The next time I went on my own on a Sunday afteroon at about 12.30. The place contained about six regulars who looked at me as though I had six heads. I got my beer and read a paper but I was well aware that I was being regularly stared at. It was so creepy that I actually snuck out when no one was looking. I won't be in a hurry to go back.

I would ordinarily find it very difficult to be complimentary about a pub that had no cask ale, but I was very taken with this place. Superb old dark-wood panelled pub and bar, curved bar area runs between saloon and public (as youll call em down ere), the whole bar-length (maybe 60ft all told) boasts an overhang with lead-light glass panels and a shorter, lower, section of the same made into snob-screens. Darts and pool were active, in a good way, on the public side of the bar divide with participation by the friendly and effervescent new guvnor. The lounge has studded leather-backed surround settles and tables/chairs/barstools in good condition. Whisper it quietly, but I was so enamoured with the place that I stayed for a 2nd drop of keg OBB and I tried the SS reserve cider, which is more than acceptable. The guv, by the way, seems very keen to get in cask OBB so I, for one, will happily go back to check progress.

One of the better pubs in Penge. Loads of potential.Loved the Organic lager and tried the Sam Smiths bitter @ 1.50 a pint. Landlady pleasant and attentive

I think the beer is great - proper stuff rather than the foreign chemical shite!
New management now too, so improved heaps! Good home-cooked food at good prices, and a great beer garden out back.

Samuel Smith Pub, None of your 'usual' brands! Excellent lager 4.5% lowest is only 1.93 a pint! and Old Brewery Bitter is only 1.66! Trying to build up a food trade, children welcome til 7.00pm. Darts, Pool, cards all played in house. Pub challenge? Can you make Pete 'Grumpy' the landlord smile!
