sorry wrong coment to this pub, should have been THE SWAN and not the WINCHESTER.

This pub is well worth a visit. Beers brew on the premises. Love the smell of hops. food and beers are awsome, staff also helpfull. keep up the good work, you rock :}

Had a facelift last year, oakleaf beer is still available.

beer and cider festival, jubilee weekend, it's usually a great weekend

Revisited on strength of last review - started at druids ending at rose in june and this was the half way stop - nope still the same I am afraid, won't be bothering again.

Re visit on a crawl. Dire, decor, landlord attitude as miserable as i have experienced, ale fine but not that cheap. It felt like a pub on the way out to be honest which is gutting as it was a rare real ale pub worth making time for in years past.
|
certainly not the pub it used to be, but looked relatively supported by a handful of regulars at the weekend. beer was good but in general seemed to have transported me back in time according to the decor. landlord could do a lot more to generate the trade in this densely populated area.
|
Not a good review I am afraid - Saturdays visit revealed avearge real ale an unwelcoming landlord and a grotty pub. The dart board we tried to use was so knackered as to be unusable - landlord would do better not to put it up in this condition. Beer was no cheaper than elsewhere - well below the Rose in june which i also visited again that night. In 2009 this pub was well regarded, juby my recent visit things have slipped.

went to last weekends beer and cider festival, good range well kept, good boozer
|
A proper, sensitively-restored local with great ale and one you can walk into without the music stopping and everyone turning to look at you.

Spitfire, Hobgoblin, Oakleaf Holehearted, 1 pump unclipped. Woody traditional dcor, heavy dark wood back-bar & high ceiling beams, round wood tables & sturdy chairs, chatty clientele suggests a locals local, and nowt wrong with that. Small tv showing Wales-England Sat eve, my notes say book corner, & decorative plates/tankards stylee whatever that meant? Walk round to the rear bar (or rather servery, no pumps here), a wood/fabric horseshoe banquette provides good seating for a large-ish group and, beyond this, a dartboard with its own space & oche. Barmaid was watching the note-taking & providing banter, ok Caz - you have your extra point!

Smashing back street boozer serving excellent real ales from the Oakleaf Brewing Company, including Hole Hearted, voted by Camra to be The Champion Beer of Hampshire 2002, 2003 & 2005 and Champion Beer of the Festival at Gosport Beer Festival 2004 and Southampton Beer Festival 2004. Well worth a visit. 10 out of 10 for the real ales.

Very welcoming friendly pub. Live music every Sunday night, acoustic session Wednesday nights (new people always welcome) and a well attended Quiz night on Monday nights (9 pm start). There is also a courtyard with picnic style tables if you prefer to sit outside. The 'Winch' also has a couple of darts teams and a five-a-side football team.

A good back street boozer, a cut above most.

A nice pub with great beer from the Oakleaf brewery. This is one of several pubs that feature great beer within a fairly small area.

This pub is friendly but a little boring. I would recommend it for older people who want a pint and a chat about the current state of the foreign policy, but anyone a bit younger and looking for a good night out with plenty of totty i wouldnt!

A friendly albeit somewhat chaotic backstreet local with two main drinking areas surrounding a central bar beneath a high ceiling. Large tables in the main bar. A friendly dog roams about occasionally.
Oakleaf Brewery beers feature amongst up to 5 real ales on handpump (I had NUPTU'ALE on 15/11/2003).
Families are welcome, and a non-smoking area is available in the pub.
A good pub, worth a visit, but if coming from Portsmouth/Southsea take an A-Z with you.
