Pleasant spot and gets a decent crowd. Staff could do with cheering up a bit though.

Pleasant enough Belgian style cafe bar on a shoppping street in the centre of town. The prices tend to be a bit on the Belgian side though, also the ale isn't up to much. Had a pretty dreary pint of Lord Lucan.

The Den Engel is lucky that it is the only pub in Leek that stocks specialist beers. That is why it is popular. If/when another specialist pub opens in Leek, it will then struggle for a number of reasons. If you are going to stock specialist beers, your staff should at least be able to pronounce the names of each beer and have a little knowledge about each one. What could have been a beautiful interior ended up having chipboard on the floor, a second rate paint job and the victorian fireplace boarded up. The landlord and landlady would be at home at Fawlty Towers and the whole pub smells of the filthy toilets. It has good beer, shame about the pub. Hurry up Titanic and open a decent pub in Leek.

Last visited in June. Impressive and extensive beer menu, probably the largest Belgian beer menu I've seen anywhere. Well worth a visit if you're in Leek.

Great bar with a very wide selection of beers, lagers, ciders and other drinks. Den Engles offers a wide variety of continental drinks. There is also a restaurant upstairs (still yet to try it but the menu looks good). A nice popular venue with friendly staff, the place is very well kept. Not the cheapest place in leek, but certainly one of leeks best bars.

Didn't realise until reading these reviews that this wasn't the original site of this bar, but nonetheless a very pleasant experience indeed. Superb & huge selection of beers, clean cafe-bar type layout and a convivial crowd in on a Sunday lunchtime - just as well really, as the rest of Leek seems to be shut of a Sunday. Well worth a return visit or two to work your way through the beer menu, will be back again very soon.

Fantastic selection of Belgian bottled beers and a good range of lager fonts, this place attracts a lively mix of customers and quite a few women only groups who appreciate the unusual tipples available. One negative was the selection and quality of their real ales and a couple of pints we sampled were dodgy but probably because no one was drinking real ale in any quantity.Den Engel could easily remove their real ale ,just focus on their excellent bottled selection and the place would still be full.Great experience for anyone visiting this attractive town but probably not worthy of a GBG entry.

I've been to Den Engel's lots of times since it first opened, but last night was the first time I've been to the restaurant. I booked it although we were the only ones there. I think the weather probbly put people off that night.
Food was excellent and service great. Can't fault it. Portions didn't look much but did fill both of us up. That's a sign of a really good meal. For starters I had Ham Hock Terrine with Chutney (can't remember which chutney). I could detect many different flavours in it and was just enough for a starter. I had oxtail with mashed potato for main. The meat was perfect, nice and tender and so tasty. Had chocolate pecan brownie for dessert. Again it was gorgeous, served with cream and ice cream too.
Excellent value and the restaurant is really nice too. Can imagine it must be brill in summer with the balcony open.

Great place for a few beers. As already mentioned large selection of beers generally well kept. One of best attributes is you can take your dog in to enjoy a beer with you.

Moved from St Edwards St several years ago (but only 100 yds away) and the 'new' place doesn't have the character and atmosphere of the 'old' Den Engel. That said, any place serving over 100 different bottles of Belgium beer can't be all that bad! Flemish restaurant upstairs that serves unadventurous, middle of the road food. Staff young and friendly but Management can be a bit sour.

This bar moved to its current premises a few years back. The old building was better than the current goldfish bowl windows in the front room. However, this doesn't detract from the fact that this an excellent Belgium-cum-real ale bar. Freindly atmsphere and staff. not as smoky as other places in leek ie Elmo's. Good cobbled coutyard at the back makes a very pleasant spot to relax on a summers evening.

A good review from me, don't be put off by the thought of all that Belgian beer there are generally 4 cask ales to sample as well. The non-smoking front bar seems more popular than the smoky back room.

What a great place!!! I found out about it on the net this morning and took a 200 mile round trip on a motorbike to visit and boy was it worth it!! Next time the bike stays in the garage and the train will take me if possible. Amazing is the word! Beer is first class, (what I could try!) and the staff and clientelle very friendly. The place is spotlessly clean and the restaurant is getting there so I gathered? An original atmosphere which is chilled and giving to a very relaxing experience. Can't wait to get back there and make the most of it!

Great pub, one of the few pubs that are worth bothering with in Leek. They serve some great, interesting beers and the atmosphere is always good. Definitely worth looking at unless you're after a cheap pint of pissy lager!!!

A very relaxed atmosphere. The cobbled yard is lovely in the evening and gas heaters are provided for your comfort. They also sell distinctive flavoured waters for the driver in the party.

Den Engel has now moved to Bodkin House just round the corner. It now consists of a smaller smoke free bar at the front with street views through the huge shop frontage and a larger back room. Toilets are down the stairs with a view into the cellar through a window. Very impressed and certianly now has more of a different more modern feel than the old place but very encentric - just like all good belgian bars!

All sorts of belgium & foreign quality ales. Some very old traditions, good atmosphere, Good food, Reasonable prices. More like a museum than a pub with a extensive beer menu.
