With time running out, we made a swift return visit to Fitzgeralds. This is definitely one of Sunderland's better pubs. Whilst I quite enjoyed the Dun Cow, this pub was a little more relaxed and did have a better choice of ales - Mallard Drake, Timothy Taylor Boltmaker, Woodfordes Wherry, Jarrow Rivet Catcher, Cullercoats Polly Donkin, Durham White Velvet, Fyne Jarl & Dark Star Original. The Polly Donkin was an oatmeal stout and very nice. Unlike the Lambton Worm, just down the road, staff here were replenishing the ales and new ones appeared during our short visit. This is a nice environment to drink in too and not too far from the railway station for our journey home. Still no real cider though.

What can I say, brilliant! Constant good beer, staff and food. A winner everytime.

Nice pub with a good ale range. But slightly too busy for my liking. We sat inside, where I believe there were 2 reasonably sized rooms. There is also an outdoor patio at the rear, that does not excatly have great views (a dual carriageway), but does catch the sun. Beers on were Sonnet 43 India Pale Ale, Cheddar Totty Pot Porter, Timothy Taylor Ram Tam & Boltmaker, Durham White Velvet, Moncada Notting Hill Ruby Rye, Big Lamp Prince Bishop Ale, Fyne Jarl, Roosters Buckeye & Lond Man Blonde. No sign of any real cider. A good pub. But we felt that we found 2 in Sunderland that were better yesterday - The Ivy House and the Isis.

Busy, friendly pub with 6 ales on at our visit from Durham, Ossett, T Taylors and Hambleton breweries. Excellent quality. Spacious, double fronted period building about 5 minutes walk of the University stop on the metro

This is a must visit pub if in the area
8 real ales on when visited with the likes of jarl and rivet catcher as regulars.A variety of different seating areas assures something for everyone.

Last port of call on Explorer ticket pub crawl. Great pub, great choice of beer and quality. Nice customers

Mainly visit on match days, which is always packed. Still, you get a cracking pint, which last time i was in, had a few great local ales. very good!!!

probably the best pub in town, if you like proper beer go there

Best pub for real ales in city centre by far
|
Probably my favourite pub (or at least a close second). The ever-changing real ales are kept to perfection, I have never and I mean NEVER had a badly kept pint in all the years "Fitzies" has been open. A cozy atmosphere and food at lunchtimes add to the lure of this attractive city centre pub (avoid the chips though - don't know how they cook them but they are crap!). Current bar staff aren't quite up to the standards set a couple of years ago when the staff offered the heady combination of being both stunning and really friendly. None-the-less this is Sunderlands best pub by miles.

I like this pub cos its quite cosy and has got a nice warm atmosphere. Was in here the other Friday night and it was packed! I was quite surprised really. I dont normally come in here on a night out, just a quiet drink.

I used to frequen this pub while at uni inSunderland. great place for real ales, quality staff, and nice atmosphere, even when busy you would get served quickly.

Excellent pub with a huge range of constantly changing real ales.
A city centre pub of true quality with gorgeous barmaids and decent food.
Gets packed on Friday and Saturday nights, but well worth a visit.
